This might be nothing, I think it's cool either way.
Remember Rhye Copeman? He is the stunt coordinator for TFA. He posted this demo reel on his vimeo account with the "Luke" and "Vader" tags months ago:

He recently uploaded this to his instagram which reminded me of Rey's Bojutsu fighting style:

    Also this :p

At the end of the sequence, there is a thrust motion specific to polearm fighting. Just saying. :)

He seems to only hold it from the middle, it seems weird for him to do that unless it's exactly a double bladed saber. I see the thrust but you can still do that with a double bladed saber or a normal saber, notice he thrusts with just one hand, the other one doesn't touch the "blade".

Yes, this move is doable with double bladed lightsaber, but it's totally against the style of fighting with this variation of lightsaber. In duel between Qui Gon, Kenobi, and Maul (or any other involving double bladed lightsaber, to be honest), Maul always keeps both hands on hilt while engaging in a fight.

With polearm combat on the other hand is quite common to thrust with one hand (especially if other is holding a shield)

I don't discard the idea of a lightsaber polearm, I think Rey will use either that or a double bladed one, just not Luke's one. Anyway, regarding this particular video, if it is a polearm then why is the grip always in the middle of the staff only? Agreed on the one hand and shield but I doubt they are using shields here so it would make more sense to thrust with both hands.

Because you can't really fight with spear like weapon, with one hand holding it like a sword, it's just to heavy. Middle of the weapon is in most cases point of balance.

Of course, but it's just a small glimpse of bigger sequence. I'm not saying, that they are using shields, all I'm saying it's more natural to thrust with one hand for a person who is trained in polearm combat (due to trening with shields), and unnatural to do so with double bladed lightsaber, 'cause this particular fighting style is depending on having both hands on the hilt practically all the time.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying, first I never heard of a spear or a lance being considered a polearm, and either way those weapons seem to be always used with both hands unless you are using a shield.

I shan't claim expertice in martial arts, but I do have half-a-dozen years of ninjutsu under my belt [yeah, I know, theres much stupidness in ninjutsu], which included curricula in bojutsu (fighting with staffs and sticks of verious kinds), naginatajutsu (naginata fighting [sort of polearm-y]), and yarijutsu (spear wielding). I have never seen a staff wielded like this before. Are you sure this is a polearm move, @Nars ? (ok, I see the point about shield fighting..., but who wields a polearm with a shield?)

To me, this looks like some fantastical Hollywood style, which is pretty much what I would expect. It is quite different from Darth Maul's moves, if I remember it correctly, as he seemed to favor slashes rather than thrusts. Still, that could be just a variant of the same style. There is no reason to assume that Maul's way of doing things is the only way the double-bladed weapon can be used, and this technique showcased above could easily be a different school, or whatever. It does, to me, look very much like a middle grip fighting style however, possibly a spear-&-shield type of style.

Spear, lance (from wiki, first sentence in both cases).

Yes, I'm just saying, that such a move would be more natural and easy to do for someone with polearm training. That's all.

Well you got me there, I had actually checked the polearm article and couldn't find any thrusting weapon there:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_weapon
The distinction I was trying to make is polearms seem to always be used with both hands and are not mainly for thrusting with one hand like a spear family weapon.

This Vid was shared by Daisy Ridley´s Twitter account.

He is not only using two hands but also uses the full length as a grip.

@Rieekan Cool vid. This is classical bojutsu, albeit quite stylized. (The jumping is pretty much stupid). The guys have perfect body control though - very cool to watch!

Pretty much everybody, from ancient Greek to medieval Europe. To be honest, contrary to popular beliefs sword wasn't main weapon on battlefield (yeah, polearm types of weapon were).

    [IMG] (bottom right corner)

Yes! Again, I'm not saying it was main way of fighting with polearm weapon. All I'm saying it would be easier and more natural for person trained in polearm fighting to do so. Thats all.

Before I made my statement i did a bit of research and used Maul example as the flashiest one. But to be honest I couldn't find any canon duel (skipping Inquisitor sword) where person uses double bladed lightsaber in one hand except this Guy:

In other cases two hands on the hilt all the time.

@Nars: Ah, I see, when you say "polearm" you mean spears and lances. Those are of course frequently used in conjuction with shields, but they aren't typically refered to as a polearm. (The name "polearm" signifies a close combat weapon fitted onto a staff. From Latin "arma" ["weapon"] attached to a staff ["pole"]. One could argue that a spear is a dagger on a staff, but it is not a common use of the term). I completely agree that the guy in the vid wielded the staff in a way you could do as a spear-&-shield maneuver.
