    Hello everyone,
Viral asked me to be the official reviewer of the Marvel Star Wars comics that have just begun their run. I'm very happy to be starting these reviews with this issue. Please beware there are spoilers here.

    Beware spoilers.....

    Vader.jpg

The issue picks up right where #1 left us, a subterranean corridor with only Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, accompanied by their ignited lightsabers. Despite whatever undercutting this may do to the gravity and general assumption that their first face to face encounter was in ESB, I feel the writers and artists are handling it great.
Luke's face exudes a healthy amount of terror, but this is a different Luke Skywalker than the one we knew before. He's fearless and when the option of running or facing the Dark Lord of the Sith is out before him, he chooses the latter. It's nothing short of bold, but I like how the writers underscore that ignorance plays a part in it, because as soon as Vader simply takes the lightsaber out of Luke's hand using the Force, you can tell Luke realizes he's in over his head.

    Lightsaber.jpg

This new canon Darth Vader is much more thoughtful and inquisitive than I ever gave the character credit for. That's not to suggest those qualities improve his evil disposition, but I'm glad he has a personality. It's really cool to see the seeds of the obsession with Luke that Vader developed between ANH and ESB. With his role in the last novel, Tarkin, and the upcoming comic series in his name, as well as Lords of the Sith, I think the story group is subtly suggesting we forget everything we thought we knew about Vader and let them reintroduce us to the character.

Darth Vader isn't going to kill Luke, he wants information. He wants to know who blew up the Death Star. He doesn't view Luke as any sort of apprentice to Obi-Wan, just a clueless agent that was mislead to his imminent death. Just as Darth Vader notices the lightsaber he took from Luke looks familiar, the conversation is interrupted....

    Han & Leia.jpg

By an AT-AT we saw Han and Leia commandeer in the last issue.

If there was a weak point to this issue I say it's the silly dialogue and arguing between Han and Leia. I understand that's where they are at in their relationship, but I felt bored and annoyed, waiting to get back to Luke and Vader. The most interesting part of those scenes is when they try to crush Vader with the AT-AT and uses the Force to stop them, while beginning to tear the AT-AT apart. Leia explains to a baffled Han how Vader is doing that and Han reminds us he's still very much a skeptic to how the Force works. It's a clever bookmark the writers use to remind us where are old friends are at in their growth to the people we left off with in ROTJ.

Threepio gets a nice piece of the action. As the one passenger aboard the Millennium Falcon, he is tasked with defending it from the indigenous scavenger beings that have descended on the ship and are rapidly dismantling it. Unfortunately, we quickly learn blasters and protocol droids don't mix. Threepio quickly goes from an asset to a liability when he lets the blaster fall into the hands of those he was supposed to discourage with it.

    Kill.jpg

The issue ends with Darth Vader reminding us why Sith Lords are jerks. He senselessly starts murdering the slaves Luke freed. The AT-AT under our heroes command manages to take out Vader and most of his troops, while Luke finds a host of speeder bikes that he hints may level the playing field.

Sorry that I'm so gah-gah for the Vader stuff in this issue, but there is a scene where we get a glimpse of Vaders vulnerability and it's such a great scene I don't want to spoil it here. You will know what I'm talking about when you get there.

The final frames are of Luke blasting his way through the remaining Stormtroopers on a speeder and retrieving his lightsaber. Darth Vader tells his Stormtroopers to hang back because "I got this".

    Vader 02.jpg

Overall, I think this was a great issue and follow-up. The Mission: Impossible feel to this arc is really cool. Our heroes already knew this was a difficult operation, and they had it under control, but now they have to get out just as the stakes went up with the enslaved beings they found and Darth Vader showed up. It's great to see them all depending each other to get out together. The confidence they have given Luke really boosts character development in this gap between films. Hope I don't get too much flack for seeing this, but I always thought Luke was whiny until ROTJ. I'll be seeing him in a different light now.

Here's to hoping that Han and Leia get a little bit more dynamic than just the bickering we saw in this issue. And Chewie?!? Where are you, Chewie? Hopefully we will catch up with our Wookie-brother-from-another-mother in issue 3.

We should all be very happy that the new universe of Star Wars comics is off to such a strong start. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story ends up. Thanks for reading.

Thanks @Kyle! Great times to be a Star Wars fan. Marvel's Star Wars is a great start to a new era. I was never too much into comics but this one really captured my attention. And the fact that it's considered canon now, makes it even more special. You can never know what you may find in there.

Thanks nice review, keep going, it was a nice read, but I prefer the art/look of the classic comics.
Luke whiney? No, I think Luke was not confident enough and maybe a bit afraid but he overcame it at the end.
What about Anakin in Ep.II and III? this was really whiney.
Sad, because this garbage is canon too.
Just think about you're watching the OT first and then the PT. (like it should be watched imo)
Then seeing Darth Vader as a angry/whiney teenager is a big schock.
As a kid I could have never imagined Darth Vader's youth so whiney.
For me he was the epitome of a bad @ss, there is no way that he was that teenager presented in Ep.II and III. (I don't want to mention Jake Lloyd)
The first wrong move was showing him as kid, Vader should have been nearly as old as Obi Wan in Ep.I
After this decision to show his cildhood and his teenager days the story goes downhill for, simple as that.
Why not jump straight in the action like Star Wars did in 1977? just cancel bad written boring stuff.
I wanted to see adventures and not a lousy explanation of a wayword kid becoming Darth Vader.
The Prequel Trilogy should have started half way in Episode III not with Phantom Menace, I feel robbed.
In Star Wars Ep.IV I like him the best, he was a smart henchman who did the dirty job nobody wanted to do or couldn't.
I would have liked to see that Kind of Darth Vader in the PT.
By the way I think that Vader was thoughtful and inquistive enough in Ep.IV, his character was well written.
His role in Ep.IV reminds me of some kind of a precursor for the Boba Fett character.

Because I like to share my thoughts, it's a Star Wars board and I'am a fan since childhood.
I see nothing wrong with that or with my attitude.
By the way what are you doing here except giving me a pessimistic rating and writing an unfriendly short sentence? ;)

I happen to enjoy reading about the positive things that are happening in the Star Wars Universe and being grateful for them. Certainly not whining about something that is not going to change and, despite how you might feel, something that has been very healthy for the franchise.

I am here as an optimistic fan who looks forward to what's next.

    Any more questions?

You do fine speaking english! I honestly had no idea you were from a non-english speaking country :)

Ok guys. Bought my first physical comic book today: Marvel Star Wars 002.

This is monumental. I got the digital version of 001 and am calling into Bedrock Comics everyday to see if they have any more physical ones in stock...were supposed to get shipment of them today but hopefully tomorrow.

It's been good to see NEW material about the saga, the first we've had about the OT characters in many years.

Thank you PoeReyMi, that is very kind, normally I speak and write in this odd language here:
Dank dir PoeReyMi, das ist sehr freundlich, normalerweise rede und schreibe ich in dieser komischen Sprache hier:
That is weird, I just translated the sentence in my own mother tongue, I think this weird stuff can only happen on a Star Wars board.
The most eerie thing that happens sometimes to me is, that I forget the native word in a conversation but remember the english one.
I call it the vice versa effect. (I spend too much time on foreign boards) ;)
Back to the topic, thanks to Mr. Kyle's awesome hint, I'am able to buy the comics before their release in Germany and I can save some money too.
I agree it feels good to get some new stories about our beloved OT characters.

Scond Edit: if someone is interested in a german lesson, just look at the short clip:

Third Edit: if someone wants to know this is how Darth Vader and the Emperor sounds in german:

I've really enjoyed the first two issues; the art is great, the pace is fast and the story is well written. I only wish they were longer! I read them in less then 5 minutes. And since when are comics 4-5 bucks a piece?

Oh, and if I had to knit-pick... What's up with the "lightwhip"? Seemed a little too.... I don't know - out of place for the Star Wars universe.

    Atta boy, Kyle! Great review!

I love comic books. I grew up/still read them. I own a lot (too many) of them. I know a thing or two about...them.

After 2 issues of this series? You couldn't come out of gate any better IMO. Jason Aaron captures the big 3's voices better than many writers of ANY medium. Really impressed how he's captured that fun dialogue without always going to the "Let's reference a ton of events that happened in the films" talk. Can't tell you all how much I hate it when writers think they need to mention the OT events to make their story matter.

Cassiday's work is top notch as usual. His Astonishing X-Men work is second to none.

Marvel putting some of it's heavest hitters on the title off the bat is genius and proves why having a HUGE franchise like Star Wars at Marvel works better than the smaller imprints like Dark Horse. Marvel has access and the resources to bring in A level talent at any time.

I don't know about everyone else, but....I LOL when I read these panels:

    Comic.png

    Vader basically saying "Child, please."

I'm just impressed with how much character is being developed and revealed in two short issues. I'm speaking mostly about Vader and Luke of course. They're setting up a really interesting interplay between the two, leading up to the Big Reveal in ESB. I think Vader's epiphany about Luke's true heritage will be an issue unto itself. I can't wait.
    I'm digging these books.
I haven't bought a comic book in probably 20 years, so this is really fun and exciting for me. I fear it's a Pandora's Box though!

I think the problem is that many don't know how to critique w/o coming across whiny

@Kyle great review!! I also questioned the Han and Leia dlg and thought that many would complain about it. I see your points, but I liked it. For those who were whining or nervous (me) about Luke and Vader meeting b4 ESB ... it was pulled off well. I actually feel the tone of their conversation in ESB hints at some familiarity. I was a bit surprised at Vader's inability to recognize Luke's strength in the Force and that he was in fact the DS destroyer. But that's just minor nitpicking and I'm sure there's a good explanation (it's why this forum is a SW encyclopedia in it's own right, thanks to the awesome patrons). I'm interested to know if Vader already assumes Luke is his son or not. He knows Obi-Wan took his lightsaber. He could just think that he was given it, considering the difficulty in finding Kyber crystals. Though I suspect the wheels are already in motion in his brain ...

Great review! I really enjoyed this issue and cannot wait for the next! As DarthZloi said above, the potentially dangerous pre-ESB Vader/Luke confrontation was handled really well and whilst reading it I didn't find myself questioning it once!

I really enjoyed the dialogue in this one! As Kyle has pointed out, Vader's inquisitive disposition is great and really fleshes out what can sometimes be portrayed as a fairly robotic (in more ways than one I suppose!) character outside of the films.

Luke's dialogue was handled brilliantly too. I agree with Kyle that Luke does come across as whiny in ANH and ESB, but I genuinely like that; it really shows his youth and lack of exposure to danger and the discomforts of war alongside his obvious grief regarding everyone he loves dying one by one. I think it also accentuates his growth coming up on RotJ and how far he comes along the Jedi path. In this issue we see a great blend of the fear and doubt of ANH mixed with the arrogance and head-strong nature of ESB.

I must say though, I'm finding 3PO's dialogue and activities to be some of the most convincing. I can't not read his lines in an Anthony Daniels voice and everything that happens is believably 3PO whilst still being novel enough.

Unlike Kyle, I did actually very much enjoy the interactions between Han and Leia. In ANH we don't see an awful lot of that friction/sexual tension, but by ESB it really seems to have appeared from nowhere, so showing that budding and blooming in this series is a great transition. It's interesting occasionally seeing Han's softer side coming through at times (e.g by the power core in issue 1 when asked what he wants) and I'm wondering whether this will evolve into the full on assaults on Leia's walls that we see in the Asteroid Field in ESB.

I really enjoyed seeing Vader in full blown combat. In the OT we mostly see him march in when the battle's done, so seeing him leading the fight is great! I'm not 100% sure how I feel about his helmet coming off. I can't really make sense of how it would come off yet remain intact?! It also has me questioning how good it can be as a protective helmet too (although I realise it's for aesthetics and breathing apparatus too). Most of all, although it showed a vulnerable side of Vader we haven't seen often aside from a few key moments in the OT and Tarkin (let's be honest, he was vulnerable all the way through the PT) which was great, it did feel like the Rebellion had come a little too close to doing some more serious damage so early on in the series. I quite like the fact that Han considered him dead though, so this should make Vader that little bit more infamous. It was great seeing the reaction of the stormtrooper though and the ensuing events.

All in all, a great issue! Cannot wait for the next and I'm shaking with excitement for Vader 001! I feel like this series has an almost Firefly-esque feel to it (possibly the sort of heist-gone-wrong thing) which is almost a bit like Rebels too, so it's good to see a bit of relatability there between the OT characters and those of Rebels, although I could be alone on that one!

Great review! I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said, other than that I haven't been this excited about Star Wars comics in a very long time.

The average price point has been $2.99 for years now, but Marvel wormed their way around it by giving away a "free" digital copy code inside every issue.
For an additional $1.00 (the jerks.)
Then they'll tack on an additional $1.00 for special covers, #1 issues, an extra 2 pages of content, anything they can come up with to squeeze more cash out of us.
DC put it off, but seems like they're charging $3.99 for more and more stuff now. Image has held out the longest, but I notice their newer titles seem to be $3.50 now.
