This issue had a lot to live up to today. I'm not sure what prompted Marvel to release this today instead of last week. This issue really pales in comparison to the other two Star Wars comics released, but I will try and be fair.

    Screenshot.png

I loved this series in the beginning. I thought the first two issues were great. By the end of this fourth issue, I feel this arc has gone off the rails. There are so many twists and turns that I find myself trying to remember who a character is and why they are important to the overall story. To summarize the arc so far, this is the story of Princess Leia trying to protect the survivors of Alderaan. It's very cool to see that Leia took her role as princess more as protector, and she is willing to do anything to protect her people.

    Screenshot-5.png

The problems I have with the series is there is way too much jumping around, whether from character to character or place to place, the dialogue and development seems hasty. We have two main players now, Leia, and Jora, the Alderaanian woman who lead the survivors underground. We meet up with them again aboard the Lord Junn, the ship Leia has been traveling in with her accomplice Evaan. There is a clear division of methodology between Leia and Jora in how to best protect their people.

    Screenshot-2.png

In the previous issue, the Empire managed to catch up with Leia and company because a girl aboard the Lord Junn was being duped by her sister, an Imperial agent, and thought she was just conversing casually. It turns out the Empire had been gathering significant intelligence on Leia and all her activities through this young girl named Tace. Jora is about to use some pretty tough methods to get Tace to talk in the beginning of this issue, but Leia steps in. Jora is clearly frustrated that Leia is running the show, and the seeds of insurrection appear to be sprouting.

    Screenshot-3.png

Leia figures out that Tace had no idea the Empire was monitoring the transmissions and garnishing intelligence from the conversations. Leia has Tace make another one and the Empire once again demonstrates they are a bunch of jerks when they realize Tula, Tace's sister, has been compromised. For some reason, Leia decides it is prudent to offer herself up in exchange for Tula, who is staring down the barrel of an Imperial blaster.

    Screenshot-4.png

Considering this series takes place immediately after A New Hope, it's very odd that Leia is going right back into the hands of her captors since she has been free from imprisonment for less than 24 hours (I'm guessing...maybe she got a couple naps in here or there). We can speculate that there is a greater plan, as it appears the bulk of the Rebel Fleet comes out of orbit to the planet Leia had just been on.

If you feel like this review sounds choppy, it probably does, because the story is incredibly so. This is no fault of the characters, which I love. I feel like the writers need to slow down the pace of everything. As mentioned before, there is too much jumping around, and way too many little twists. There are some great elements to work with, but I feel this arc is being clumsily laid out. I hope the next issue can reign the bloated story back in, because it started out on a very high note.

Great review. I totally agree about how the pace and setting is moving SO FAST. However, in my mind, issue 4 revitalised my interest in this series, mainly because of the characters.

    *SPOILERS*

We have Alderaanians meeting with Half-Alderaanians, and have issues of "pure-blood" and "mixed" between the Administrator from Sullust, whereas Jorga is a typical and good character who wants to have the help of ALL Alderaanians. The sort of political and racial tensions not widely seen in Star Wars was very appreciate, especially because it builds up Leia's character as a senator. Evaan is a fun and simple character, a more noble Han Solo, and I enjoy seeing how she has grown to respect and fully follow Leia. As for Leia, boy, she really starred in this one. Not only does she actually look like her movie version by the end of the comic, how she cares and acts towards all of those around her was so much like how she is in the movies. There is enough development in her military capabilities to point to how she acts in TESB, and how she has by the end of the comic seemingly slid into the movie-style, with the added touches of the comic, was great. And last but not least-

    NIEN NUNB! AWW YEAH!

    I forgot to mention Nien!

Thank you for pointing out the "glass half-full". I don't think by any means this series is BAD, it's just sloppy in some parts. There are bits and pieces that are great, including the nuance of cultures as you point out, I just wish the storytelling was a bit more cohesive.

I feel that the writers wanted Leia to struggle with little things, but from them, create a vast and definite impact on her reputation and her reputation in the eyes of her people. We have to remember she was an IMPERIAL senator, and even though she wasn't evil or stupid, as we all know, just how nuanced and confident she is is enough to satisfy me and hopefully many readers :)

Not sure I agree it has been *that* short of time. Probably several weeks have passed since the Battle of Yavin, and I am thinking several more throughout the course of the comic.

Agreed. Too much story packed into too small of a space, which is cheapening it, sadly.

I thought I read somewhere that this mini-series spanned about two weeks after ANH. If that is correct we are probably on the last couple days of those two weeks. Isn't there only one more left in this one? Then it gets replaced by the Lando mini-series.

I appreciate the reviews, Kyle. I'm not reading the comics, so this is where I learn about what's going on in them. Keep up the great work!

Actually this series starts during the end of the medal ceremony in ANH. Not sure about the time span. Maybe a few weeks.

Yeah, I was taking a quick guess. I forgot about the travel time. I'm going to say a few days.

Right, and what I heard was that it covered the two weeks following the ceremony. At least if I am remembering the two weeks part correctly.

That's pretty much what I said. Add in the time of travel that has been happening *during* the comic and you have several more weeks. Remember: with a half-working hyperdrive it took a couple of months for Han and Leia to travel from Hoth to Bespin, which are close to each other, relatively speaking. I really think they just condensed too much time into this short of a run. Either something should have been cut so the good stuff could have been more developed, or the comic run should have had a few more issues. Either, way, there is good reason for it's choppiness, and I think the time factor is a big part of that.

I've decided to put this series on hold until it's run its course. If the feeling is it pulled itself together and became worthwhile, I'll go ahead an pick up the rest of the series. I just don't have the patience for impatience, if you know what I mean. It just feels like they're trying too hard to make Leia interesting. She is. So you don't have to. Relax. Tell a story. The reason Kanan is so great is precisely because they're taking their time building the character without constantly shoving him into incoherently plotted situations.

There's only 1 more issue before it ends.

Oh. I thought it was a 12 issue series. Hmm. Not sure I have much hope then...

I think if it were a 12-issue run we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I don't love this series, but it's not bad either. It's just that with Vader and Kanan being so great and SW being really good as well, I find this one lacking. I think it's the mini-series aspect of it. They have a big story to tell with the others and the story gets more developed over time. This approach is what makes a lot of TV shows more compelling than feature films today. They have 5 issues to knock out this Leia bit and for the story they are trying to tell, I'm not sure it's enough. While saying all that, it's not awful, and I enjoy that it is different. I am interested to see how it wraps and maybe it will even lead directly in to the first SW issue. Lando looks promising. Hopefully it won't make the same mistakes that Leia has with a convoluted story.
