Sorry I didn't get this review done in the usual fashion last Monday! Work was BRUTAL and it prevented me from spending the necessary time breaking this sucker down, but man...I COULDN'T WAIT to write about this episode. I think this is one that many will point to as one of their favorites. I know it's one of mine!

"Call To Action" gives us a serious side that we haven't seen since "Gathering Forces" and we get the series introduction to a major character that has some weight to it. Enough gabbing!

    *SPOILERS AHEAD*

    Last chance!!!

    What worked for me:

    - Grand Moff (freaking) Tarkin

    Tarkin.png

What many of you might not realize is that I was never a big fan of his character from ANH. It's not that I didn't like him at all, rather I never felt connected to him. Enter Stephen Stanton/Clone Wars series along with the latest canon novel titled simply "Tarkin" and I found myself understanding and loving the character more than I EVER thought I would. His high ranking in the Empire has it's reasons and I think the new canon does a great job of showing why he's a BA. When I heard a few days ago that Tarkin was making his Rebels debut...I flipped. His entrance was the same as when Vader and Sheev arrive on the Death Star in ROTJ. It's an outstanding nod to what's come before and it also shows how important he really is since it's the same way as Vader AND the Emperor. Tarkin's presence is not played for fun and games. He's there for a reason. Mostly, because the failures of the Empire on Lothal to obtain the band of Rebels. The ones in the Empire who fail get dealt with...and it's not pretty. People who wanted a darker and grittier "Rebels" will get their wish in this episode.

Here is the ROTJ entrance I was talking about:

    ROTJ Death Star look.png

    - Ezra's showing that he is in fact growing in the Force.

    Probe Loth.png

Ezra uses the Force to attach himself to a Loth Cat and through it, destroy an Imperial Probe Droid. Creative! It's really Interesting to see Ezra's growth in the Force every episode albeit, little by little. IMO, I think we are headed towards major growth in the Force with Ezra by the end of this season. In what way though???? His mind control/creature attachment power seems like his "specialty". Will this be Ezra's strongest Force power as he get's older? Or is it only his first?

BTW...weird it took this long for a Probe Droid to show up in Rebels, am I right?

    Probe.png

    Kanan. Dude's a baller.

    Smile.png

I"ve stated before that Kanan is my favorite character. Hard not to love a guy who's not powerful enough to defeat the Inquisitor, barely being able to train a young punk in the Force and doubt himself all while he does it. He's the Jedi everyman. He fails. He continues moving forward. That's the sign of a true fighter. In "Call To Action" Kanan sticks his neck out on the line for his friends and has NO HESITATION doing it. Even at the expense of getting captured. Now, he might be up to something in the first place, thus letting himself get captured, but I'm not sold on it. Kanan's growth and self doubt is easily one of the top 5 reasons I love I this show. I think this gets unnoticed quite a bit.

The way Kanan is standing in this picture look familiar to anyone? ;-)

    Classic.png

    - Different visual ideas on the Empire's toys.

    Empire carrier.png

One thing we have to remind ourselves is that we didn't get to see EVERYTHING the Empire had at it's disposal in the OT. This could be viewed by two different sides:

    1. Disney wants "new" stuff to sell to suckers like me.
    2. There's no possible way we saw EVERYTHING the Empire had at it's disposal.

I think both are right and I'm totally fine with it. The Empire's version of the Republic's LAAT ship gets it debut and it's a slick call back to the original. Makes sense that Empire would "rebrand" old concepts and gunships from the Clone Wars. Nods and call backs like this help create a connection from the PT era to the OT era which we haven't seen a lot of so far in official canon. I'm all for that.

Also love that Tarkin dons an Empire Security Bureau like outfit, showing that Moffs still can see the sight of battle and what they might use if they were to do so. Very cool.

    Tarkin and Kallus....png

    What didn't work for me:

    - Zeb is turning into a clown. (Harsh, I know)

    Zeb.png

I liked Zeb from the early episodes, but the last couple I can't figure out why his character seems to have taken steps BACKWARDS. Ezra has to pull Zeb away from a Gun Turret and Zeb yells back "But, I like this gun!"...WHEN THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY OUT NUMBERED! It's only when a blaster shot which almost hits him that he comes to his senses and gets off. Wasn't this guy supposed to be some BA warrior who used to serve under the military of his home planet labeled "Honor Guard"? Why is he acting like a moron? I like Zeb, but I'm scared what the last couple of episodes have done to him. (See Idiots Array)

    Quick hitters:

    - More KOTOR references. Chopper uses a computer "spike". Those who know what I speak of are smiling.

    Spike.png

    - I will never get sick of homages to ROTJ. Keep em' coming!

    Lothal ROTJ.png

    - I LOVE these troopers so damn much. WHERE ARE THE TOYS HASBRO?????????

    Trooper.png

"Call To Action" is a tough one to place in my "favorite episode" list in regards to the show. "Gathering Forces" and "Rise Of The Old Masters" are firmly on top 1 and 2, but this might not be to far behind. It's a great answer to the "this show is aimed at only kids" critics while also maintaining it's fun sensibilities. This episode was so good...I DIDN'T EVEN CARE THAT IT TOOK PLACE ON LOTHAL THE ENTIRE TIME! That says something!

Till next time Star Warriors! (Admit that you love this now!)

I loved the cynical way Tarkin said "if only we had someone who specialized in dealing with Jedi", calling the inquisitor out on his failure. That line was pure Tarkin, and really set the tone for the rest of his dealings with the Imperials on Lothal. The execution was also a huge surprise, and really set the tone that things are now serious, for all involved.

A few small things that when put together show a bigger picture :

    - The Empire inadvertently let the entire galaxy know that a Jedi still exists by broadcasting a picture of the "criminals" that
    featured Kanan holding his lightsaber.

    - There are other rebel cells operating throughout the galaxy, but they are not unified. The empire hides the fact that these cells exist, even from its own officers (see the surprise on the two officers faces when Tarkin talks about other rebels, right before the Inquisitor does his dirty work). Also notable, the empire understands that if all the rebel cells worked together, they could become a credible threat.

    - The re-appearance of a Jedi has a strong impact on everyone. The Imperials on Lothal almost seem in awe of him. Tarkin tried to supress this quickly, but it is clear that Kanan has left an impression on them. If the imperials are impressed, the citizens will be inspired.

These things, when combined with Ezra's broadcast at the end of the episode, could be the spark that leads to the formation of the rebel alliance. I for one would love to see how that would play out.

For me, this episode finally makes Rebels feel like a worthy successor to The Clone Wars. I cannot wait to see the next episode.

You can say that again! This episode was amazing, and had a bitter-sweet end to it similar to ESB. Kanaan Captured, but the crew of the Ghost broadcasted the Truth to the Planet If not a couple of systems. Like how Han was captured and the rest got away. This is definitely a two part episode, just like Empire Day and Gathering Forces , and I continue to like Rebels more and more. I always like Rebels from the trailer to now I was drawn to this show. It appeals to my Inner-Kid, and I can't wait to look back at the First season of Rebels and say "It had a few weaknesses to start out, But It has improved and will become the Best Star Wars animated show.

First of all this episode looked gorgeous. They are starting to use more of the budget on the animation and set design. One thing didn't make sense,Tarkin said these rebels are non-violent. Maybe Zeb and Ezra are but Kanan, Hera and Sabine arent pulling any punches. Those aren't stun shots and Hera has killed at least a quarter of the Tie fighter pilots assigned to Lothal.

I think he was referring to civilians and collateral damage. I got the impression that he has dealt with several rebel cells that aren't so careful about bystanders, or actively engage in true terrorism.

Great episode overall. Loved it. However, I'm not sold on the Imperial gunships.

I really like the fact that Tarkin's made an appearance and seems to be a bit part of the new canon. I'm not 100% sure on his appearance (particularly the creasing and bulging on his head - makes it look like he's wearing someone else's scalp on top of his!) but they got the dialogue and everything else spot on for me!

The character development for Kanan and Ezra was brilliant. I reckon we'll see some backlash from Kanan lying to Ezra, particularly as it's something Ezra is sensitive about. Really enjoyed Kanan's sacrificial side coming out!

I think the mention of other rebel cells is the opening of Pandora's box! We should begin to hear more about other planets and then maybe see more! So those of you who began to hate Lothal should be happy pretty soon and people like myself who didn't mind should still get the depth around Lothal on the side!

Outstanding. Dudes getting decapitated and Kannan taken prisoner. Why though? Use him as bait to catch the others? Tarkin mentions other rebel cells, is Ezra going to be the Bin Laden that unites them all? Interesting. I like where this is going.

The one thing I didn't like was that the episode ended.

    I want more. And I know I shouldn't.

If Kanan is killed, will Ezra be like this...

I think Corran Horn reminds me of Kanan... Why I love him.... I agree that zeb is being the clown... Kids love that stuff though... I thought the scene with the two killed by the inquisitor was by far the most dark and amazing sequence yet... Makes tarkin seem super evil...

I am starting to believe that Tarkins son will be in 7...I could see somebody that wants to restore the empire to it's height...

As the reviewer said, I also didn't mind we were on Lothal. Also, I liked how the dropship was the succesor or the same one we saw in the last season of Clone Wars.
Tarkin was awesome, and the death of two goofy Empire officers caught me off-guard. I would love to, if the series went like this onwards and that after this ''climax'' of rebel insurgency that even the Moff had to inspect this ''backwater'' planet, we will get from the Lothal finally.

If not, that would be lame, as you know, it was weird before, that they are flying off and returning to Lothal endlessly, without Empire taking the notice in comparison to how quickly Han Solo got caught by Imperial Destructor after leaving Mos Eisley...

I would love to see X-Wings and some space battles + Wedge ala Clone Wars. Space battles in Clone Wars were quite spectacle always (topped only maybe by the second ground invasion on Geonosis with Y-wings and all).

Great episode! As I thought from the beginning, Rebels will grow technically and in general feel as the characters grow and the story expands.... we will see the rebellion build and spread visually through new planets, more sophisticated animation and encounters with major characters (like Tarkin in this episode) and overall greater investment in the series...
If you notice, even the soundtrack is somehow restrained... with few peaks, as to say: "stay cool guys, we are not there yet". The makers have willingly chosen to keep the story "down" for the first season, and use their "low budget" to create expectations; we will be rewarded in the next season but "call to action" has sparkles of season 2... Go Filoni, we are on target!

Not sure that he would have to be that old... Tarkin could have had the boy during IV which would make him in his thirties or forties
