Sorry this is late! BLAME DISNEY XD!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. I'm finding it hard to put this intro and review into words if I am being truly honest here. This first season of Star Wars: Rebels ended, I think, in the best way possible. We have resolutions and our heroes succeeding, which might end in their ultimate undoing. Makes sense who lived and died. (Judging by some of the new threads posted in the Cantina since yesterday, I think 90% of you already know who did.)

Big things happened. So let's begin.......

    SPOILERS!!!!

    LAST CHANCE!!!!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - The small story resolutions are getting justification.

    IMG_1232.PNG

The Clone Wars was an AMAZING series that pushed animation to boundaries that were never seen before and might be untouchable for some time. The story telling method wasn't always consistent jumping around from different scenarios/characters or arc to arc. Rebels is the exact opposite of The Clone Wars. The animation is solid, but the overall structure of the series is all on the same page while moving forward. I've praised the series for doing this already, but are given MANY loose ends that end up paying off in this episode. The Tie Fighter that Zeb and Ezra steal, Why Hera didn't tell anyone who the other Rebels were and the REALLY big one....Who Fulcrum is (MUCH more on that one below). "Fire Across The Galaxy" gives a nice and natural bow on top of this fantastic gift of a first season's storylines. Both big and small.

    - Kanan Vs The Inquisitor...HOT DAMN!

    Kanan the baller.PNG

Rebels has given us a few lightsaber duels that have been solid. Nothing GREAT or top ten worthy, but....not bad either. "Fire Across The Galaxy" might have changed all that. The duel between Kanan and the Inquisitor in this episode is REALLY good. best of the series no doubt Yeah, it barrows HEAVILY from The Phantom Menace end duel scenes, but I don't think that's a bad thing either. I can't wait to see how it holds up over time to all the other duels. Time will tell.

    Throw down.PNG

When Ezra takes a tumble and Kanan states that he let go of his fear, it's then that things take off for him. It's no surprise to see the "fear" aspect pop up again in Star Wars. Fear leads to anger etc, yes, but it's interesting that fear is a theme that runs RAMPANT through the franchise. The prequel era is FILLED with references to it. Yoda tells Anakin to "let go of everything you fear to lose" and Anakin can't do it. So his fear ends up turning him into a Sith Lord. Karan had fear of losing Ezra, but he let go of it once he thought Ezra was dead. Once he let go of his fear....that's when Kanan bested the Inquisitor.

    - The Inquisitor. We hardly knew thee. RIP 2014-2015

    Inq dead.PNG

I can admit it....I WAS WRONG. Kanan didn't die. I am both bummed (pride) and happy that Kanan survived. He's one of my favorite characters after all. This death scene was powerful though. The Inquisitor decided to kill himself and simply tell Kanan before dying "You have no idea what you have unleashed here today"....wow. Foreshadowing much? His death also makes too much sense for many reasons:

    1. He can't fail again and survive the wrath of Darth Vader. Doesn't line up with Vader's actions later on in the films.
    2. Someone needed to go to give this series a sense of weight to it. It can't be 100% aimed at 4 year olds. Need to give it SOME edge, right?
    3. You can easily kill off one Inquisitor and bring in NEW ones. Makes sense from a marketing standpoint too. MERCHANDISING, MERCHANDISING, MERCHANDISING

...but c'mon...is he REALLY dead? Didn't this guy teach us ANYTHING?

    Maul.png

    - Ashoka turns out to be Fulcrum.

    IMG_1249.PNG

Now, this wasn't a complete shock to me. With Filoni at the helm, I think we all could assume that this was coming eventually. I am 100% glad they decided to make her a key part of the start of the Rebel Alliance. Ashoka isn't a Jedi, but she's been trained in their ways for many years. At this point in the Star Wars timeline, Kanan and Ashoka are the galaxy's best bet at taking down Sheev and Anakin. Meaning, something has to give sooner or later and that's what makes this reveal so incredible and sad at the same time. With the signs pointing to Darth Vader becoming a prominant figure next season, I think it's safe to say that our heroes might be in over their heads at the expense of some lives. Hopefully, Ashoka will last and feature in the overall series for awhile. Not going to lie, it was pretty amazing seeing her again.

    What didn't work for me:

    - The slow motion??????.....ok, the live broadcast showed during the end of the lightsaber duel, some really BAD slow motion in certain parts. I was shocked on how bad it was. I was getting ready to go off on it in this review before watching the episode one more time on the XD app and...IT WASN'T THERE ANYMORE??!??!?!?!? I am so confused. Did anyone notice the differences on the broadcast AND XD app?

    - It was so cool that we got to go to Mustafar...I mean in orbit of Mustafar....*sigh*

    IMG_1233.PNG

I am officially a broken record. We are essentially PROMISED to see another planet's surface...ONLY TO BE DENIED! If this episode wasn't amazing, I think I would be raging right now. It's so apparent that Disney gave the Rebels crew ZERO time to design and render other planets for the first season. Filoni claimed in the "Rebels Recon" video that the Rebels will be planet hoping more in Season 2...I pray he's telling the truth. This first season on Lothal got old....VERY FAST.

    Quick hitters:

    - Ezra isn't ready to go toe to toe with a lightsaber yet. Will be fun seeing his progress.

    IMG_1239.PNG

    - The other Rebels save the day! Such an awesome moment!

    IMG_1246.PNG

    - Let's gaze upon him...one last time....*sniff*

    K V I.PNG

What a ride! I think it's safe to say that Disney's first attempt at new canon for Star Wars has been a massive success. We have been given some amazing Star Wars stories that IMO hold up as well as any Star Wars story out there. I can't help, but get excited with what the future holds for all these characters.

I would like to thank all of you for the kind responses and encouragement I've received while doing these reviews since the start of the season. You haven't gotten rid of me yet, either btw. I'm working on a Rebels article for the site AND...I might show up with some speculation threads to help make the time pass.

As always, I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the episode! I'm sure it's going to be all positive! (wait....this is the internet. Never mind.)

If any of you are going to celebration in April, please don't be afraid to say hello to me! You'll know it's me by the name tag I have on. ;-)

Loved the episode. I wanted to watch it again on my iPad after going to bed but it didn't show up in the XD app for a little bit.

I did end up watching it again three more times since then.

I think we witnessed a big transformation in Kanan as a Jedi the moment he let go of his fear. I look at this as his Jedi trial, and we can now view him as true Jedi Knight instead of the padawan who survived order 66.

Did anyone notice how Hera reacted when Kanan was back? The way she embraced him and used the term "dear."

I'll have to watch it again from the DVR to see if I notice the slow motion. I wonder if it was more because of issues with your cable provider, but it could have been on Disney's end as well.

Thanks for all the reviews throughout the first season. Looking forward to the second.

I didn't noticed any slow motion, but maybe I was just blinded by the overall awesomeness!!!

The recorded link I watched had the slow mo but my Itunes version worked fine. I think it was a technical issue. Great post by the way @Hermann22 as always!!

Loved the episode! Well, at least when I watched it the second time with my kids. I think the first time I was too hyped up from the wait and was mostly spoiled just from watching the previews they gave us. The first time I was waiting for anything that wasn't touched on in those previews and I got nothing, so it ended up flat for me on initial viewing.

The previews pretty much told me the basic plot, and between the 22 min time restraints and the scenes they showed and knowing how trailers are teased, I already knew we wouldn't see mustafar's surface, that they destroyed a star destroyer in the end, that Ezra would fall but not die, that most likely the inquisitor would be who would "fall", that a cavalry of rebels would be at the end, that vader would be in it but likely only as a cameo, etc.

However, when I watched it last night with the kids and could just enjoy it with no preconceptions...holy cow it rocked! This just reinforces my distaste for previews!

Anyway, one question - what were they trying to say with the multiple voices calling "Ezra" when he was collapsed on thre catwalk? Before they come clearly into focus as Hera on the comlink, you hear a few very different voices calling his name. Was that just Ezra's cobwebs clearing out from the fall or were they trying to say other voices were actually reaching out via thre force to wake him? I'm actually hoping for the former, but wondered what others thought.

I was so happy that the finale was a true closure + springboard for next season, rather than a cliffhanger! I also appreciated that they tied up most of the little throwaway scenes that left us wondering all season. I particularly like the very vague callback to the scene in "Path of the Jedi" where Ezra showed up late to his training because he was "with Sabine" which we now know was when she painted the stashed TIE. It's the little things...

One of the times I watched it, I turned the caption on prior to Ezra hearing the voices. One of the voices was listed as Mira Bridger, Ezra's mom. I think the rest was just Hera but I would have to watch it again with the caption turned on to know for certain. One of the loose ends that was not tied up was the fate of his parents, so who knows, we may find out that one or both of his parents are still alive and/or his mom was a Jedi.

Didn't make that connection to them being late and the TIE being painted, good catch.

Certainly an excellent episode, and I'd say easily the best of the season, as it should be.

I absolutely loved the introduction of Ahsoka. It just appeared very natural, the way she popped down the ladder without pomp or flair, or excessive attention paid to her. Was good to see they didn't overdo it.

And Vader as well. So simple yet effective, just him walking with his expressionless mask was enough to ramp me up for next season.

I noticed the slow-mo on the XD app when I watched it live. A little weird...glad to hear it was a technical issue...I thought it might have just been my brain developing Jedi reflexes as I was gaining the force ability to watch the duel in slow motion due to the shear awesomeness of the episode. Rebels will go down as a great Star Wars story as long as it stays on the track it's on currently. Over all Clone Wars still dominates Rebels, but that is an unfair comparison given its 6 seasons and feature film versus Rebels' 15 episodes so far - but I must say, the finale takes its rightful place among some of the Clone Wars' greatest episodes.

Side Note: I kind of have a Sheev peeve...I cringe when I read it... I know it is official now since the Story Group says so, but the films never mention his name and Darth Plagueis (novel) states that he chose to not go by his given name and use Palpatine alone. I know Plagueis is Legends but still. I don't know why we have to start calling him Sheev now. Lol.

We had a pretty good season finale here with the Kanan and Inquisitor duel and now the show will feature Ashoka and Vader.

I thought we would be on Mustafr but I guess not.

Seeing the other rebel ships come out of hyperspace with the Ghost sent not only a shiver of excitement through me, but took me back to the first time I watched Return of the Jedi. I loved it.

I liked the idea of a guy with one name. In a galaxy of trillions, it shows confidence that he is the only palpatine that matters. I'll continue to type "palpy". I can acknowledge that he has a first name without ever using it.

I loved the episode and thought it was definitely the best episode of the year. I am excited that Ahsoka is back and that there will either be a new Inquisitor (Red headed Emperor's Hand), or Darth Vader appearing occasionally. Can't wait for season 2.

I am just wondering if they received 4th or 5th degree burns on their hands and knees from crawling through the glowing opening that Ezra made with his light sabre :)

I did like the little moment where Ezra shakes his hand off from touching the hot surface, but it did then seem to cool off quickly...

Hey all, I haven't posted on the boards in a while but I wanted to chime in and say thank you for your reviews of each Rebel's episode, they've been fun to read. And what a killer finale that was! I have never seen TCW but I was still beyond psyched that Ashoka was revealed. And the Kanan vs Inquisitor fight is definitely in the top 5 lightsaber duels of all time.
