Why Have the Blu-rays Gone Backwards??

    Ever since Disney just had to buy Lucasfilm, why have the Blu-rays taken a step backwards?

    For the TV shows:

    From excellent DTS-HD (TCW 3-5) right down to old-age Dolby Digital 5.1 (TCW: Lost Missions, Rebels 1-2)

    For the movies:

    From more than 3 hours of detailed extras (commentaries, 2-3 documentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, trailers, TV spots, photo gallery) for the PT and OT to only a small selection for TFA with 1 documentary, a handful of featurettes and a few short deleted scenes that ran for just under 2 hours?

    It's standard practice these days sadly to do bare bones releases for the initial home video release and then up the extras to get fans to double dip down the road. I'd complain, but George practically helped invent this concept with SW, so fan enablement of this practice in the past has done nothing to dissuade the suits from pushing t further and further until we stop buying (And I'm not accusing as much as admitting here. I've lost count as to how many versions of each film I've owned over the years but I'm sure the OT at least is in double digits at this point). Those blu-rays with all the features were the (exaggerated for effect) 763rd release of the first 6 movies. I would assume after the trilogy is complete we'll get a more comprehensive box set in similar vein to the OT and PT box set. And I'm sure we'll all run out to the store to buy it.

    As for the sound track, I'm with you there. My guess was that those who budgeted out the release either didn't think the higher quality mix would make a dent in sales on a kids cartoon home release (children's movies and TV shows, outside of classics, frequently see low-rez audio tracks). Or, if you want to play nice, maybe they were matching the original release mix to stay true to the intent of the creators of the show who likely mixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 for the netflix/DXD releases which wouldn't have had capacity for a HD sound mix.

    Yeah a lot of it has to do with padding their bottom line which is why there were exclusives and things like that for TFA's release...also they probably didn't do the sound thing because most people with a simple sound system and a television would hardly notice it unless they have movie theaters in their houses... ...

    The only problem with that is that Disney have said for TFA, they're not holding back extras for a future release. With the PT DVDs, you didn't need to double dip as they were perfect the first time.

    I think its semantics. They may not have made any special features that they are specifically holding back. But that's never stopped a studio from going back years later with new interviews, documentaries, restored extra scenes. They could add stuff like footage from the premiere, features on cultural impact, score only tracks, script to screen or animatic to screen features.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not endorsing this in any way. Those initial PT releases were an exception because George didn't really focus on holding back extras to milk the trilogy for more money (he could just release a new SE for that). I'm just saying its just the way its done these days. I have no doubt that over the next 20 years we'll get 5 or so releases of the new trilogy with slightly changed or additional features each time until we have a full compliment of features and have all spent hundreds of dollars on every version that comes out every few years.

    I agree. I wish they had a director cut addition with the director letting us know his thoughts as we walk through the movie. Or a version where they have cool pops ups of information about characters and scenes like I have seen in other movies.

    I wouldn't even call it an appeal...it's done to build demand so a newer release will have new stuff that the old bluray does not causing the demand to be satisfied and then the cycle repeats itself causing Disney to literally rake in the cash

    Thanks for pointing out the obvious but how is that what disney does, different to what Lucas did. There were many changes over the years and to get the original cut you need to buy a special pack that was way overpriced.

    Indeed, I just miss the days when DVDs came packed with special features. Say you will about the Prequels, but their original DVD releases had some of the best and most illuminating special features ever. Sadly this practice has been discontinued with the advent of Blu-Ray :(.

    From what I remember there were only like 3 releases and only two of which actually had any special features. That special pack was probably over priced partially because Lucas was reluctant to release them. i wouldnt call the changes "many" for the bluray features though.

    It seems everyone here has forgotten the 3D blu-ray is due to be released on November 15. In addition to the 3D blu-ray the set will include 3 other blu-ray disk and a DVD. I figure one of those will be the 2D version of the film but what is on the other 2 disks? I figure it's going to be all the stuff we were waiting for on the original release back in April.
