    I can't attest to the timeline of when TR takes place (and the conversation about Thor and Hulk being missing during CACW leads me to believe that it takes place at a later point in time), but a good portion of DS (read: the hero's origin) is set earlier in the chronology. At that point, I would say that Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme.

    I have to wonder if a Spider-Man cameo may now be a part of the equation, since they're in NYC and all.

    Well, Feige said the events of Thor: Ragnarok are the reason why Thor and Hulk don't appear in the film. That said, the film could start before the events of Civil War and finish afterwards.

    Thor and Hulk, at that point, had been missing for about a year. It stands to reason that with the way things go in the MCU, they were both pretty busy for a while before the movie starts.

    Agreed, Hulk would have been abducted sometime in that period, and Thor would be busy investigating the Infinity Gems.

    I would say that that is a good bet. Also of note, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we learn that Hydra considers Stephen Strange to be a threat. I'm doubtful that they would feel that way if the only remarkable thing about Stephen Strange is that he's just a really good surgeon ;).

    Technically, they targeted everyone with the potential to be a threat. That included smart people who didn't have powers at that point in time.

    Indeed, but it still seems odd for them to directly mention a successful New York surgeon don't you think ;). Obviously, we as fans know that was done as part of Marvel's plans for setting up future movies, but in the context of the story it hints that the folks at Hydra may have been aware of more than they were letting on.

    Well, the algorithm determined one's potential to be a threat in the future. Now, considering that Madame Masque had access to the darkforce in the late 1940s and so did Blackout who was imprisoned by SHIELD. So, it's not outside the realm of possibility that HYDRA somehow guessed there was a mystical cult somewhere out there. However, they couldn't find it as it would be most likely guarded and hidden. Remember, magicians access the darkforce from the dark dimension as well and use it bend and shape reality. There could have been some code in the algorithm that searched for potential events that would lead one to travel to the suspected hotspot.

    You're going to have to work with me :D.

    That seems a bit far fetched for an algorithm to predict things like that, even by comic book logic, but I'm willing to work with you ;).
