For me it's tough. I would love to see Vader done right at the end of Sith and that could make the payoff absolutely worth the first two...things....

    However....

I would love to see them ditch the all CGI set pieces and do better integrating actual practical sets. Part of my biggest problem is how lifeless the sets are and how little awe they inspire on the actors who are doing their best vs CGI (which was brand new at this level) and it just kinda feels like a high school play at times because of it.

How are these people visiting some of the most miraculous looking places in the galaxy and they look like they just stepped out into a corn field...

Have you seen the thread on here that has chronicled every single practical set on the prequels?

If he would've remained mysterious we wouldn't have gotten to see how he was changed from a human to a 90% robot what I would change in the prequels is not make Grievous run away every time he encounters someone in the non canon clone wars he was a feared General however the prequels kind of ruined him

I have not, but it mostly comes down to the lack of the world feeling lived in. I know there are some but too much of it was CGI at the wrong times.

I am pretty sure that there were almost more practical sets in the prquels than in the original ones. But it is true that CGi did replace a lot of what could have been practical but you have to consider that it was considered considered state of the art vfx at the time and part of the reason it might not feel entirely "right" is because these were worlds we'd never seen before but if they had built real earthly worlds using cgi then it probably would have looked even more real. There are parts of the world in star wars that were extreme cgi that you probably didnt even notice such as in AOTC when anakin and padme are on naboo and the palace place looks almost nothing like what you see in the finished movie.

Well if that is true, I would bet it's because there are just MORE sets than in the OT.
I mean what sets in the OT aren't practical FX?

Really doesnt matter how many practical effects the prequels used, the final product came across as a cartoon CGI version of our beloved franchise

I will say this about the prequels.....I used to complain about the prequels all the time, in fact I spent years rewriting them to satisify the OT fan, but when I saw TFA, I had more of an appreciation for the prequels. The prequels tried something new with Star Wars , but failed. The TFA did not take any chances and just copired elements of the OT as a safe reboot. Took no risks. Took no chances. Lucas pointed this out - and I can't believe I agree with him on something. So as much as the prequels are just a borefest, at least Lucas tried something new and took a chance. He failed miserably, but I respect him for trying. I dont respect JJ Abrams for his approach of "lets do another Vader call him Kylo, another Palptine call him Snoke, another Luke call her Rey, another Han call him Poe, another Death Star call it Starkiller Base, another Obi Wan Mentor figure that will be Han, more storm troopers, x-wings, tie fighters, falcon - lets just redo OT and call them different names and make them bigger and better. FAIL.....

It's called optical effects. That's all the original trilogy had. But at the same time, the prequel trilogy also worked with what they had. The whole point of it was to be ready to receive the effects that it did. Dialogue aside---it was a great trilogy. It had its faults, yeah, but it did well with moving the digital vfx industry forward and someone had to. I'd change a lot but not the VFX unless they're enhanced just like the original trilogy was.

3 non-white or male leads. Killed off the most beloved character. Didn't have LUKE FRIGGIN SKYWALKER SAY A DAMN WORD.

Yep no risks. And if you say they aren't risks, I'm sure there are NO Mary Sue threads about Rey here....

Sure the story is the tried and true "Stop the bad guys from killing billions more people" Star Wars story but based on some reactions, doing too much else can get people on edge as well.

You are basically listing each protagonist and antagonist as their archetypes which essentially can be done for every movie ever.

Kylo in his first movie was more fleshed out than Vader was in his. He's a Star Wars bad guy, so yeah, he's similar to Vader...like all of them.

Rey is no more Luke than Young Anakin was. He [Lucas] just added the force birth (barf) and made him turn instead of almost turning.

Other than being a pilot, I see no real similarities with Solo. Very different characters actually.

    Obi-Wan mentor figure....like Qui-Gon?

Starkiller is a boring "main villain" because ROTJ already ripped off ANH with it. Oops.

You really just complained about X-Wings, Tie Fighters and the Millennium Falcon in a Star Wars saga movie? I mean...really?

Star Wars has been quite incestuous from the conception. ESB borrows beats from ANH. ROTJ borrows A LOT from ANH.

TFA was a soft reboot for new fans. That's all. It was, at it's core, re familiarizing us with the Star Wars world to set up more.

If you paint with such broad strokes, it's hard to find much enjoyment top to bottom in anything "new" in this kind of universe.

This isn't a defense of TFA as much as it is an exception to "Well at least he tried something new and TFA didn't" when he borrowed plenty as well.

I think they hired JJ because they wanted to give the fans of the OT a movie they liked( he brought back ST). They didn't want to do something different that Lucas did and have the fans hate them for doing so. SW fans are hard to please. Give them something different they hate it. Give them something similar, same formula, they hate it cause its pandering. Hopefully these standalone films will have something new and old that the fans will like.

I could not disagree more about it being a "great" trilogy. The OT is a great trilogy. The first 3 Indiana Jones movies is a great trilogy. The Godfather is a great trilogy even if it's really only because the first two are two of the greatest movies ever made and the third is just there.

It has it's moments but you can't say dialogue aside....that IS the friggin movie...

It never felt like it was in the same world as ANH. It was always just too clean. That's the problem when Lucas decided to rely so heavily on new technology that he kind of painted himself into a corner with it. If they went through and remastered them with modern FX it would look better especially if they could make it feel more lived in. Everything was so sterile.

TRy watching the movie without the dialogue. I did that once and it SHOULD be on you tube but you'll see what I am trying to talk about...dialogue doesn't make the movie.

If you had never seen Star Wars, if you had no notions of what ANY of this was, it'd make a hell of a different experience without the dialogue. That's the rub. It may work for us, but speaking from a general film perspective, unless the movie was made to be dialogue free, it probably shouldn't be. Now, you may enjoy parts more because of the lack of cringe but I don't think that would "fix" the movies either.

Sequels are one of the hardest things to pull off in film. If there are any Back to the Future fans here, Robert Zemeckis explains sequels perfectly. He said the fans want it to have the same characters and magic, but at the same time has to be different. Has to be the same, but different. So hard to pull off..... Marvel seems to be the only studio that is successfully pulling it off. Captain America , then Winter Soldier, then Civil War - the sequels seemed to get BETTER. But if you look at those films, look how different they are with one another.... It developed the character of Steve Rogers so well throughout the three films.

Star Wars has no excuses.... If Marvel can do it,and they've only been around since 2008, then the film makers should be able to do it with Star Wars. Esp with JJ Abrams being an expert at franchise film making.

It's kinda weird, but I'd probably replace most of TPM with the Obi-Wan and Anakin comic. CombinePadme into the young girl from that comic (although keep the bait-and-switch from TPM - I really enjoyed that part), and maybe have flashbacks to Anakin's recruitment and Obi-Wan...? That's really hard...maybe just let Lucas play out his original ideas for the PT and not give into fan pressure, while having someone assist with the dialogue...?
