We are now mid-season for Star Wars: Rebels and sadly, there hasn't been a direct tie-in to Rogue One. The good news though is that this episode features Darth Maul, which is usually a good sign for all of us because Sam Witwer brings a level of intensity that goes unmatched when he performs his characters on Rebels or Clone Wars. Will this episode satisfy all of us until the show's return in a few months? Let's find out!

    7.jpg

    SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - (Darth) Maul
    3.jpg
As I said at the start, Sam Witwer is fantastic as Maul and his greatness continues in this episode. Maul is one tricky bastard; he manages to fool the rebels so many times, but it doesn't come off as old to me. Instead, it only shows how brilliant of a strategist he is. He needs Ezra to obtain the other portion of info that the two received during the episode where they merged the Jedi and Sith Holocrons together. Maul makes no secret that he views Ezra as a missing aspect of his life by passing his knowledge onto someone. I wish Ezra would just go with him, honestly. That would make for a much better show, IMO. This episode REALLY tells us where it's headed for it's second half with the possibility of the crew getting to Obi-Wan Kenobi before Maul does. Will this mean Kenobi will actually show up in Rebels, or does it mean that the rebels will get to Maul before he reaches Kenobi? Something to think about....

    - Dathomir
    2.jpg
The Clone Wars episodes that featured Dathomir and the Nightsisters were among my favorites of the series for it's creepy and very alien looking planet. Dathomir and the Nightsisters were originally created in the old Legends novel, The Courtship of Princess Leia, but I never read it. Honestly, I haven't heard the best things about it either.

    9.jpg
Maul brings Ezra to Dathomir where Maul has obviously been staying. Together they use Nightsister magic to obtain the last of the missing information that both parties desired. Maul tells Ezra that all the Nightsisters are gone, that he is the last of his kind, and insinuates they posed a threat to the Empire so the Empire wiped them all out. I'm not sure if this is alluding to the Clone Wars episode "Massacre," in which the separatists rain down holy hell on the Nightsisters, or if the Empire came there and literally took out the remaining Nightsister and Nightbrother clans that were left. I'm assuming both.

    1.jpg
Dathomir looks amazing on this show. It looks like it's on the same level as the Clone Wars animation. When Ezra and Maul are walking in the Nightsisters' lair, it literally looks the exact same as the old series. We got confirmation that the Nightsisters tap into an aspect of the Force, but their power comes from the Planet itself. VERY interesting.

    Bendu returns!
    8.jpg
It's always great to see Bendu come back, even if it's only for a short time. I really wish that the show would focus even more on the aspects of the light and dark side of the Force. I find it interesting that Maul didn't see Bendu when Maul snuck up on Ezra and Kanan when they were talking to Bendu. Perhaps only they can see this Force being? Sure seems that way.

    What didn't work for me:

    - THERE WASN"T MORE TIME ON DATHOMIR!!!!!

    Quick hitters:

    - Can we have an episode where Maul brings people to sacrifice on Dathmir so we can bring back the Nightsister clan? Thanks.
    4.png

    - AP-5 > Chopper. 'Nuff said.
    6.jpg

    - Sabine now has the Darksaber. Hmmmmmmm.
    5.jpg

This episode is up there with previous Maul episode as one of my favorites of the entire series. Yes, I am being biased because I love Dathomir and the Nightsisters too, but I think the show is at it's best when it deals with the greater aspect of the Force. I also think this episode did a great job of setting up the last of the season, and could be creating the way for a truly amazing finish. All in all, the first half of season 3 was stronger than the first half of season 2, and I expect the second half of this season to be great as it begins to tie all the loose ends with Maul and Thrawn.

As always, I look forward to hearing what you all think of the episode.

    Paul

Fantastic episode. It was great to revisit the Nightsisters. Also, I'm curious about the painting of Satine Kryze.

Big takeaway is Maul now knows Obi-Wan's location on Tatooine. Ezra and company only know it's a planet with two suns. Sabine Wren is now the owner of the Darksaber.

I loved the episode but didn't see what made Harloff so sure now that Rey is related to obi wan.

I think he's reading a lot into the whole Obi-Wan/Satine thing.

Yeah that would be the only thing I could think of. I guess we'll find out later in their review.

If you strongly believe in one of fan theories, then when you watch anything that might prove your theory you start to believe that some details, that for others might be unimportant, are in your opinion crucial. Take a look at wat happened after the recent interview with Daisy. Kristian immediately went to the "These are your first steps" line, while I, a person who doesn't want to know Rey's origin, thought of the talk that Maz had with Rey just after her vision.

Exactly... it's a few things happening at once. Daisy talking about how people should know her parents. The guy talking about Obi-Wan playing a role in the new trilogy. Obi-Wan's films waiting for the new trilogy. The Obi-Wan's relationship with Satine that's not direction mentioned, but hinted in the new Rebels episode. These are dots that people are connecting, but it could just be noise.

I agree. I like Harloff and Jedi council, but it seems to take almost nothing to make him absolutely sure of anything.

I didn't pick up on that. I just thought he was uninterested in the Bendu and didn't interact with him. I rewatched the clip, and you may be right. I still don't understand it.

Kanan turn around and says "Bendu what should we do" and Kanan can't see (no Hondo-like puns please) Bendu anymore. It's like Bendu vanished.

I enjoyed this episode very much. The way they went right into it in the opening and the way it moved, the way Maul basically blackmailed Ezra, the return of the Nightsisters even in ghost form, the connection between Clone Wars and Rebels, prequels and OT, it all worked. I wish Ezra didn't destroy the altar, I hope he didn't destroy the possibility of them coming back, I always liked them.

When Bendu asked what Ezra wanted and he said to not see Maul, Bendu's line "Then don't turn" cracked me up.

I do hope we will get Kenobi in the Rebels, I like how James Arnold Taylor interpretation of the character and I wonder how he would do old Obi-Wan. I waited for Sabine to get darksaber because Freddie Prinze Jr. talked about how Kanan and Ezra would teach her how to use it.

I agree with everyone else, I don't see Rey Kenobi thing, I think Harloff saw what he wanted to see. There was nothing hinting at Rey's parentage at all. Possibly he saw Satine's portrait and his imagination took over.

All it all, great episode and I want the Geonosis duology to be just as great. A month of waiting, sigh. But, I'll take comfort in Rogue One. :D

If I remember well, Satine's name is Wren and she's clan Viszla, I don't see how she could be related to Satine with these informations.

    Leia Organa

I could be remembering wrong but didn't they say if Obi-Wan returns on Rebels they hoped that he'd be voiced by Ewan McGregor?

I do believe you're right. Filoni said he wanted Ewan to voice if obi wan ever appeared in rebels.

I totally agree with this. He goes all in on some theories without much support sometimes. But then, so do lots of Star Wars fans. It's part of the fun. At any rate, there was no hint of anything about Rey here.... and that's coming from someone who is slowly warming to the idea.

Anyway, am I the only one who thinks the Nightsisters get a bad rep? They're just trying to survive, and the whole galaxy is against them... not that they're without their own wrongdoing in the past.

Good episode. I'm excited to see where we go with Obi-Wan.

Love the episode. I see Ezra has changed a lot he isn't the collector he used to be. How could he have just discarded the dark saber light that? I liked that Sabine got the saber just by chance. Ezra is certainly going to wonder what she is doing with it later. Also curious why Bendu didn't want Maul to see him. Does he have a history in the dark side? Maybe he hasn't always been in the middle.

I really think people forget that it's all just fun. I mean I know we all hold these movies and the lore near and dear, but they're movies.
It's all fun. If you can't just have fun with it for what it is sometimes, you take it too seriously.
I love being a Star Wars fan BECAUSE of the wild and insane theories fans make up and throw around.

Yeah I didn't get the Rey vibes from this, unless I just missed something.

Just watched the episode, didn't love it as much as I thought I would, but it was still great! :)
IMO, Obi-wan is not the key to destroying the Sith, Luke is. Ezra was just seeing Maul's part of the vision.

You're right. But while Luke was the key, he needed Obi-Wan's guidance. So Obi-Wan is crucial to the downfall of the Sith.
