With Bob Iger's latest comments, obviously...

I don't mind them recasting Leia, though I wouldn't like it much, but only if she had a part in the story that they couldn't get around, they could do it as a double from the back and cut down the scene. Or have her activity off screen. I kind of like the idea that Leia lives, but I don't know how they would do it and have it satisfying, so she could still be a character in other media, and live on I guess. You figure though that Mon Mothma was commanding off screen in the first two films (before we knew she was even there), and they could just have a mention or something. It's going to be upsetting either way, recasting, or killing the character, mourning both the character and the actress who played her.

Great posts by all! While I love Carrie Fisher and always will, I think a recasting is something I could live with, as long as the new actress still captures the spirit of Leia......

 

Although I pointed it out in my 11 point plan, i'm against recasting. Case in point. Peter Sellers was the 1 & only Inspector Clouseau.

Alan Arkin, Roger Moore, Roberto Benigi (as a b@stard son) & although he tried the hardest, even Steve Martin couldn't quite pull it off.

Carrie is the 1 & only Leia. I'd rather they kill her off then recast.

 

Darth Basin I can respect that point of view....Leia may be inextricably tied to Carrie.....

I won't count on 1 and 3 that much. A lot of things are told before a release ( We all know that Benedict Cumberbatch is not Khan in STID )
So my guess still is that Leia was already meant to die in VIII. But of course they can't say so without spoiling a major plotpoint.

 

If anything, what or which creature embodies Leia's spirit and essence most? Most definitely her charming little four-legged entertainment specialist Gary Fisher. So why not take the dog, strap on some hair buns, get a camera and.........................well that would never work of course.

 

I certainly do not interpret Iger's comments that it is obvious Leia dies in The Last Jedi. I actually believe Leia survives this film, and whatever changes must be made to Episode IX are for a point in the future. Carrie's passing is sad, but I just cannot imagine Leia was ever intended to die in this trilogy. Yes, this is a passing of the torch, but that does not mean you lay waste to the entire old guard.

I always envisioned Luke & Leia surviving, retiring from the films, but not dying.

I honestly don't have a problem with a recast of Leia. If it is necessary to stay with the intended story they had planned. I know peoples emotions are high on this issue, but unfortunately humans are not immortal and life and Star Wars must go on.

They'll do some minor tinkering with the script and make her less of a factor on screen, but a big player "off screen". Kinda like the Emperor in ANH & ESB. Mix in some unused footage from TFA and TLJ and presto, problem solved.

Quite so. I wonder if they'll get a stand-in actress to fill any gaps that the Carrie Fisher footage might require, though. If they used proper angles, prosthetics, etc., then it could work.

Or Carrie Fisher's footage will be able to work on its own. We'll see.
