It definitely doesn't look as vibrant as a Mustafar as we see in ROTS, but I kind of appreciate that. In ROTS, Anakin and Obi Wan are dueling in a fuel of rage, passion, and terror. By the time Rogue One rolls around, Vader, though a sith, is much more in control of himself.

Good point. And on a purely geographical level, Mustafar is a whole planet. It's very likely that it will look very different from one place to another. Planets are huge, after all!

Haha, that's very true- I was just referring to the idea that it looks so different than ROTS, despite apparently being located on the famed "high ground" spot.

I hope we see more of it in future spin-offs.

Why Mustafar? Why would Anakin live on the very planet where he had nearly lost his life? Looking at his cybernetic limbs should have been a great source of anger to him without having him live on Mustafar.

The way I see it, story reasons aside, this was made as a connecting point for future films. That's why it was Mustafar: so it can show up again.

He could probably overcome it eventually. But living where it all went to blast...where his best friend took his limbs, where his wife died (as far as he knew)...it's where he became Darth Vader. It's important to keep him as fixed on the dark side as possible. Look what happened when he wasn't, when he was out and connecting with his son...eventually he let the light in.

No change in that regard, he's right at home in the darkside.

People keep going on about how different Mustafar looks in Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith, but I think there's a fairly obvious explanation...

The Sith scenes take place at night time, and the Rogue One scenes take place during the day.

Maybe he didn't get a choice after all the Emperor is hardly a great boss & Vader is not really in a position to argue. So the emperor builds the castle takes Vader there & basically tells him this is your new home complete with a bacta tank & guards.

I've seen a couple people say that this castle is built on or near the spot where Obi Wan defeated Anakin. Is that true? I know it was built over some ancient Sith...thing.

I thought it was pretty cool. I've never really been too big on the idea of Vader having any place to really live, much less a big castle, but it's an idea that's been kicked around and it showed up in Shadows Of The Empire and I think mentioned in other works. So it's nothing too crazy. I always just liked the idea I got from the films that he was sort of nomadic and lived in the quarters of whatever Death Star or Star Destroyer he was stationed. All he needed was a lightsaber and his meditation chamber. If he were going to have one I like the way they did it in Rogue One and not some place like SotE in the middle of Coruscant next to a diner. Mustafar is nice and secluded, evil looking and has various ties to the past that give us a few ideas why he would choose the location.

I think it's also because of more dried lava is in R1 than in ROTS. . .

Not looking at the concept art but the actual scene in the movie: did anyone see that there are in fact five rivers surrounding vader's castle of which one is a river of fire:

Acheron (the river of sorrow, or woe), Cocytus ( of lamentation), Phlegethon (of fire), Lethe (of oblivion/forgetfulness), and Styx (of hate)

    Hades
