Usually. But even Obi Wan was capable of being a bit rash, sometimes.

Yeah but he ended up in check, as qui-gon said: "think in the present and not the future" which is something he did a lot.

Underrated? No, since he was the perfect defensive lightsaber duelist after changing forms after Qui-Gonn was killed. Underrated in everything else but Mind Tricks? I'll give you that, the man is extremely underrated then :p

Especially if you take into account some of his Clone Wars showdowns!

    Dude was a boss!

He was a epic swordsman, from the movies, tv series and games, he's the saberman.

He was a representative of what a Jedi should be and a great swordsman.

Why do so many fans insist upon putting Obi-Wan on a pedestal? He has always struck me as a lot more ambiguous . . . and a lot more interesting than some perfect Jedi Knight or Master who always does or say the right thing.

I don't believe there is such thing as the "perfect Jedi". I've never encountered one within the entire film franchise. And if I thought Obi-Wan was truly "perfect", he would not have made so many mistakes in his life. And he would have been a lot less interesting to me.

I wouldn't quantify Obi-Wan's lightsaber skills as underrated, rather I think they are inconsistently portrayed...which is the issue. I especially don't like that in order to build up Anakin, and to have a scene with Anakin dueling, Lucas chooses at least twice to have Obi-Wan taken out of the fight early on both times with Dooku, for example, which to me is just sloppy writing IMO...

I don't see how that is sloppy writing. And since when has the franchise ever claim that Obi-Wan was the best light saber swordsman within the Order? I certainly don't recall such a scene. Obi-Wan can't beat everyone all of the time.

It's amazing how so many fans STILL buy that blindingly ideal portrait of Obi-Wan as this "perfect" Jedi. After 40 years. I find it rather sad.

From a strictly OT perspective (a certain point of view) I understand why it's portrayed that way. Vader and Palpatine are made out to be totally evil (at least, at first) and Yoda and Kenobi are made to represent what Luke can become. If Obi Wan said he was just a mediocre Jedi, it wouldn't really be all that inspiring to Luke.

I really like the idea of the PT showing how things really were, though. Now, what would have been really interesting, then, is showing Obi Wan as not all that impressive during the PT. Not necessarily ineffective, but also not the center of attention that he is in the series. Just a regular Jedi who happened to mentor Anakin, and ended up having to look after Luke because no one else could.

Would even be more of a twist of the knife if the only reason Obi Wan survived Order 66 and the purge was because he hid like a coward, and watched his friends die.

Not that I dislike Obi Wan, and I think that McGregor played the heck out of the role despite the script- but a more layered take on the character itself would have been great, and could have culminated in his ultimate sacrifice meaning a whole lot more. Anakin killing his former master is pretty meaningful on its own, but a formerly cowardly Obi Wan standing up to Vader to save Luke? That's some decent character development.

As others have stated, I too was always under the impression he was pretty much the best. But I think my source for that was the Obi-Wan XBOX game. Which WAS underrated.

Obi-Wan what the Formost master fo form 3, Soresu, lightsaber combat in his era. He was held by Mace Windu as probably the Only Jedi in the Order at the time who could beat Grevious gue to the fact that he had a literally unbeatable defense in pure lightsaber to lightsaber combat. It has been stated somewhere that if I remember correctly Grevious could attack like 20+ times per second. To any other Jedi, this would be impossible to defend against, but Obi-Wan was able to resist the onslaught enough to widdle down the droid. Even versus Anikin if Mustafar, Anakin who used form 5, Djem So, which is a very brute style relying on physical strength to overpower one's opponent, Obi-Wan was able to hold off the brute strength of Anakin. So neither speed nor strength could break him easily. It is for this reason that I feel Obi-Wan is a remarkable swordsman, who in the movies was kinda nerfed to make it so that Anakin could shine more than he would have if Obi-Wan was actually using his full potential the whole time.
