True but Thrawn was sent to the Empire to gain there alliance agents some thing even they were fearful of so (SNOKE) so they may have a temporary working relationship with whoever will help them before they going there separate ways again after all it's a big galaxy.

That's true, I still don't see Thrawn completely trusting The Resistance/New Republic though.

So, does anyone of you think that Thrawn went down to Atollon in Zero Hour just to ensure prisoners for Tarkin or also to prevent the possible repeat of Batonn, even if there were no civilians on the planet?

I finished it last night and ended up giving it a 7. I enjoyed the characterization of Thrawn and his story enough that I enjoyed the book a lot, even though there were quite a few things I didn't like in terms of writing and story.

I didn't really enjoy the book. It was the first that felt too much like an EU novel. To me it took too long to build up Thrawn in the Navy ranks. Especially if he had Palp's blessing. And I could care less about Pryce.

Yeah, if there's something that I didn't really care for, it was the first 3/4 of the Pryce chapters. Almost like a completely diferent novel within a novel. Not that I hated it, but I wasn't very compelled by the character. Think of how much more Thrawn could've been in the book! Or maybe even Zahn could've done some NIght Swan "antagonist" chapters. That's one weird thing, Thrawn didn't really have an antagonist. Night Swan was more of a McGuffin.

I really liked parallel between Thrawn and Pryce, not just because parallels between navy and politics, but because during his climb Thrawn manages to keep his moral core, whether you agree with it or not, while Pryce loses a piece of her humanity every step of the way. I feel that we will see the fallout of Batonn in Season 4 of Rebels, especially because of some comments Dave Filoni (at 6:41) made. The scene between Tarkin and her was absolutely brilliant. And her secret meeting with Thrawn gave me life because of this:

    Inconspicuous disguise, Thrawn, ingenious. :D

Pryce caught Thrawn on his way to initiation night at Omega House.

I do see the parallels. I guess, I don't find Pryce to be very compelling - moral girl who learns the system. My issue with her character was how Zahn wrote her. I was never sure if her loyalties were to the Empire or her family - what was her end game? I would have liked to have seen more references in the middle of her story to her drive to avenge her family's business loss.

The other thing I didn't care for was how Zahn seemed to under play the blatant intolerance of non-alien species. Yes it was in there, but this novel was a perfect chance to show how intolerant the Empire was. With Thrawn so supremely better than the other players in the novel, the bias towards his alien race gets muted by the jealousy over his abilities.

The real problem is how to you introduce Thrawn into the Empire without him taking over the entire Navy because he's so good.

    A: He has to die

B: He has to be sent back to the Unknown Regions

We've already been teased his death by the Bendu. I do think they'll kill him off - but if they don't, he will have to piss off the Emperor so much that he will be sent to the Unknown Regions. I could see him disagreeing so much with Death Star 2, that the Emperor sends him away to oversee the threat from the Unknown Regions - or perhaps this threat wipes out the Chiss, and Thrawn goes home to investigate.

Regardless, the easiest way to reconcile Thrawn's existence in the galaxy at this time is to kill him off.

This won't happen any time soon. He was just reintroduced into the official canon and, unless Zahn writes an episode of Season 4, he will live for sure. They might use Legends exit and send him to Unknown Regions where there is a lot happening in a new canon, besides the unknown threat.

So, I have a question for both book readers and Rebels viewers. Thrawn ends shortly before his introduction in Rebels, Thrawn already has Chimera and commands Seventh Fleet but he has no Eli with him any longer. How do you think Eli ends up with the Chiss? He was still an officer of the Empire, he cannot just up and go as he likes. While he sees Eli as a friend by the end of the novel and he trusts him, it is clear that Thrawn was uncomfortable sharing Chiss location with the Emperor. So, how do you think this plays out?

I think the Emperor sent him there as part of mapping the Unknown Regions.

I think Thrawn sent Eli. The Female Chiss commander (I forgot her name) was expecting someone sent by Thrawn. Maybe they faked Eli's death, or he retired and Thrawn gave him the coordinates just before Rebels season 3.

Well I suppose it could be Eli works for Thrawn so if it just him & a small ship I guess Thrawn could get away with sending him to Chiss space with out anyone finding out after all he is just one guy in a vast navy plus Eli was a logistics expert so I guess they could cover there electronic tracks with out much trouble. Also it clear Thrawn did not approve of the DS so he could have sent Eli to the Chiss with the DS info he had gathered so far. Or it could be Eli was selected with Thrawns advice to be the first contact ambassador between the Empire & Chiss.

I finished the book the other day (I can send someone JUST ONE free copy of it via Audible I just need an email address i think.) I loved this book and I'm wondering what Thrawn is up to by sending Eli on that last mission in the book. Do you think that Thrawn has anything to do with Snoke or his revelation?

This is my guess, remember Thrawn is a major Tactician and Eli was starting to learn his secrets a tad!

Well my totally crazy theory is that Snoke & the rest of his race are the threat that Thrawn goes to the Empire for help agenst & they will turn up at the end of IX to become the bad guys if they do another trilogy.

Thane Kyrell just got up and left in Lost Stars so it is possible. It is not like the Empire is going to find Eli with the Chiss. But I don't think Thrawn would have put him in the position of being labeled a deserter. It is possible the Emperor gave Eli's mission his blessing or maybe Thrawn's new rank of Grand Admiral gave him the clout and authority to send his aide wherever he pleases.

Thrawn was amazing, It seems his back story is very different in this universe with the whole exile thing. I do like how much came out of Outbound Flight, Ar'alani for example. Though I am still hoping for Car'das to somehow show up in this universe.

Did anyone else notice that the beginning was mist encounter almost verbatim?

I agree that the unknown region has a lot to do with Snoke, and I like your theory that Snoke is why Thrawn went to the Empire.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 29, 2017, Original Post Date: Apr 29, 2017 ---
If I'm not mistaken, there is a reference to the Emperor sending people into the unknown regions. Hux's new stormtroopers went at the end of AM: Empire's end. So maybe Snoke was sent by the Emperor or maybe Thrawn knows who he is. Man the possibilities are intriguing enough to keep me wanting more...
