Given Snoke's paranoia, I do believe he has encountered Luke at some point, making their conflict and eventuality. Luke is definitely going to be the hero of the film, though. His return is Aragorn's, the reclaiming of a legacy and birthright. His ascension in the third act will be necessary to save the others and turn the tide of the battle, like Gandalf at Helm's Deep.

I think Luke gets killed in TLJ just like Obi-Wan did in SW...just putting that out there.

I can't imagine Luke being killed off; he's an integral part of the saga. More than that, with Carrie Fisher's passing, a precedent is already set to kill off Leia to accommodate the late actress. This means each film in the Sequel Trilogy would have killed off the three main legacy characters and that's just disrespectful. Luke will survive this trilogy.

I think this will simply be Luke's new costume, like the one Rey will get at some point during the film.

It's definitely his new costume. I've always liked Luke in grays and blacks though, it's a good color on Mark.

Grey is also much more practical than white. It doesn't get dirty as easily as white.

I'm right there with you. Seeing Luke in his black gear is instantly nostalgic. That's a Jedi Knight right there, or so the toy card told me. lol

I said the SAME THING when they talked about Han being killed in TFA, and you saw how that went! I think this is the end for Luke, and I think that's why Mark has made the comments he's made. Luke comes to an unsatisfactory end, and Mark knows the fans are not going to like it.

The difference being that Harrison Ford wanted Han to die for many years. I believe if Luke dies it will be some day in the future like Yoda. A natural death.

I see Han's death as the one that already parallels Obi-Wan's. Which is interesting in and of itself, as surely not many would've thought the cocky smuggler would grow to have the same sacrifice that the wise sage Obi-Wan had 40 years earlier. The connectivity and parallels in the mythology are what make Star Wars most interesting to me in that regard.

With that said, I agree that I see Luke dying a natural death similar to Yoda, whether it be in IX or beyond.

It might be denial, and it's definitely nostalgia, but when Luke passes away, that's the culmination of the Star Wars Saga for me. That's the end of this phase, anyway. I'll always respect more films and an expanding universe, but the saga ends with Luke's journey.

Few things have pissed me off more than the way Finn has been handled and appears to continue to be handled. But Luke being killed in TLJ would top it. If he is turned into a Force Ghost or does an Obi Wan Kenobian "strike me down and I'll become more powerful" that will take the very last of the wind out of my sail.

I hope sincerely that it's a reference to Luke's cynicism with the Jedi (with which I can reasonably see Mark taking issue). Being a Jedi has been most of his identity for all of his life. Saying the Jedi need to end seems like the least likely thing he'd say given what we know about his journey, but I can see RJ convincing him why this angle makes sense.

If instead Mark's disagreement stems from him being killed in TLJ I don't think there will be a way for me to enjoy the franchise going forward. It's not that the franchise depends on Mark being a part of it, eventually his participation will end (as will the participation of all the current characters). But how they handle him as new stars emerge will be critical. Killing Luke off after one episode in the ST is NOT the way. I don't care how it's handled, write Luke off in the SST. We've lost enough legacy characters already. If you can find a way to make his death work for the movie, you can find a way to make it work without him dying.

Why do you care? Luke in the new trilogy is a selfish coward who abandoned his friends the second things got hard; the same way ALL the old heroes are pathetic wrecks struggling with the pain of what they've gone through in the past 30 odd years.

I have already resigned myself to dropping out. Rogue one was a very nice send off and as far as I'm concerned that's it. 7 films and no more. Luke was my childhood favorite, and I know they are going to screw him over. Since Finn will not be taking his place, there's no reason to watch anymore. I don't think Mark would make the comments he has made if he didn't feel this "interpretation" of Luke Skywalker was wrong! If anybody should know what Luke would be like, it would be him...period!

All we know of Luke leaving is what Han said so calling it cowardice is speculation. He could have reasons the story make clear. It could be he hoped to find something. It also could be tragedy and grief and we get to see him come back from it. But even that isn't cowardice.
