Does anyone know what this iconic image displays? It comes up on the Death Star Overbridge display screen before each battle. Maybe displays various weapons/shield ranges of the Death Star?

Yep maybe it was a layout for a possible battleplan.

Question: if there's a Death Star Overbridge, is there also an Underbridge somewhere?

Seriously, does anyone know what publication first called the DS bridge the "Overbridge"? I'm curious now.

Just taking an educated guess here because I really dont know. It seems the round object in the center is the DS. The elongated oval blobs emanating from it all seem to come from the dish. That would lead me to believe those are programmed coordinates for firing the main DS weapon. The symbols at the end of each blob could be a symbol representing each shots destination. All just speculation of course.

I always looked at it as the large round object was the target, the smaller circle in the round object was the calculated best aim spot, and the expanding parts were the calculated debris path of such said target. This is a great question that now I need to know the real answer to.

It's foreshadowing the Death Star's destruction, showing the trajectories of various key parts of the station in the event of an exo-thermic reaction due to some hack farm-boy shoving a torpedo up the exhaust port :D

    (epic fail)

@Darth Raybo I think you're right. The Overbridge's main viewscreen diplays the target/ planet with with a measurement of the expanding cloud of debris. I recommend following article:

That article claims that what we saw in ROTS was not the Death Star. Is that the case in legends, and/or is there any basis for this in canon?

OK, here’s another one for you guys:

    DS_glitch.jpg

What is the damn explanation for this deviation in-time/canon-wise?

(And I know that in real live, design plans for the DS changed during production while the computer graphics were not touched later on).

Could somebody please phone or twitter Pablo about it?

Rogue One also shows the same blue print too. I'm just surprised George never went back and fix it while he was adding stuff to the OT.

Interesting, I never had a shred of doubt that this was the calculation of the debris trajectories of Yavin Iv to ensure that the DS wouldn't be hit in the process.

I'm pretty certain it was a confusion during post-production, i.e. the CGI artist probably only had an early DS matte painting to work with (see image) but the actual VFX model was built with the superweapon dish above the equator.[IMG]

In-Universe explanation: What we see in the CGI displays in the control room of DS Bay 327, during the Rebel briefing and finally in Rogue One is probably the propulsion dish of the Death Star, located on the dark side of the Death Star (i.e. the side we never see like the dark side of our moon). ;)

Hah, @Lt. Hija, spot on as always when it comes to such questions about SW origins.

By the way, very nice to read you again after that long!

@Star Dude Thank you, I've been busy over at the other message board examing production development of the OT Star Destroyer Bridge designs and the Tantive IV, both from the VFX model and in-universe point of view. I'd be contributing a whole lot here, but my visualizations would be exclusive to Cantina members only and not attract outsiders that google for particular images and themes.

Side note: that matte painting was actually done by Ralph McQuarrie. (He also did at least one alternate shot of Yavin as a blue gas giant.)

The idea IIRC was to film the painting as a background element and zoom in on it as the X-Wings approached, but the effect looked too much like... well, like zooming in on a painting. It lacked the three-dimensionality that a model could provide.

I've always wondered what the story was behind the last-minute change to the superlaser dish location; if there was one besides "it looked cool", that is.
