Ok, guys bad ratings are flying low these days, again. We want to encourage a friendly enviroment to discuss a character. Rules Violation isn't really a part of this concept. @Canadian Ronin @cawatrooper @DarthFuller22 you can always rethink and undo negative ratings, that is a much better option then waiting for the mods to clean up that mess.

I'm on a phone until Monday (not super easy to use here, unfortunately) but I'd be willing to do so when I'm back on desktop.

Edit: Done. If you noticed that I missed one please let me know, but that should be all of them.

Eh. So the one preview of Finn in Star Wars Adventures has him in stormtrooper gear, worried about a cute purple alien monkey. Pass.

My God after all these years your main purpose apparently remains to lurk in Finn threads and put down any insurrection regarding Finn's importance to the story in comparison to Rey's. Anyone who gets out of line and has an interpretation or an opinion that you don't see fit, that doesn't align with your viewpoint, you swoop in to lay down the law. And you always have your trusted quotes from TPTB to use again and again to fall back on as your cover. Tell me do you go around on threads as much shooting down theories of StormPilot too? Because those same TPTB have also politely dismissed that notion. Do you hang around the Kylo Ren threads to deter the folks who think he will end up being the true hero of the saga (being a Skywalker and all) and that he will redeem himself and become the love of Rey? And there are other "strange" interpretations, guesses and rankings of characters' importance that are scattered throughout SW message boards. Do you play thought police with them too or do you save your "corrections" exclusively for people who do not adhere to your mindset of Finn knowing his place? Are you that petty that you can't let even just a couple comments slide, even if you know they are wrong?

Neither have been really significant to the storylines

I mean the questioning is simply absurd. If I'm betting the house then my guess would be Finn ISN'T force sensitive. That being said based upon one film appearance nothing has been put forth that would make it at this point completely out of the question. There are even a few actions of his in TFA that any competent writer could tie into his being force sensitive. Whether it happens is doubtful, but the hand-wringing that is still going on by people who consider it an unfathomable possibility is puzzling.

The biggest lie EVER in SW fandom is that making a character force sensitive has no bearing on the popularity of that character. Total nonsense. With a few possible exceptions the most popular characters are always force sensitive. And what's more force sensitive characters are the ones that SW fans spend the most time speculating about. They are the ones which fans spend the most time making up their own short stories for. Movies. Animations. Books. They all bear this out. Being force sensitive is where its at.

People didn't love Anakin (Hayden) because he was Force-sensitive.

People didn't dislike Han (Ford) because he wasn't Force-sensitive.

Jyn wasn't either and they made a whole movie around her. Her not being Force-sensitive was the least of that movie's problems - it wasn't a problem at all.

    This is silly.

There's always one major character in the trio that represents the human element in Star Wars series. In the PT that was Padme, it the OT that was Han and Leia (until ROTJ, anyway, when the retcon happened).

While I don't think Finn will be Force sensitive, I would not find it strange if it turns out that he is. There is still the possibility as the story develops to make it so if the writers want to go in that direction. I don't buy the argument that TPTB only want Rey to be Force sensitive because it would take attention away from Rey. They can make Rey stand out no matter who is Force sensitive if that is their agenda. If they make Rey the only Force user (besides Kylo) it is because it fits the story not because of an agenda because if they have an agenda because if they have an agenda they can make Rey stand out whether there is one Jedi or ten Jedi.

Even though I don't think Finn will be Force sensitive, I do think he will have an important roll as the story moves forward and we are going to see a lot of growth in his character. If he does become Force sensitive, I'll welcome it with open arms.

I think it more likely that TPTB want Rey to be the sole FS because they seek to mimic the OT because they think Star Wars is a formula rather than a fictional world which unique stories take place in. I personally think that's equally bad but naturally a large part of the fandom has been waiting for a soft reboot.

People often hated the acting of Hayden and they indeed thought he came across as a brat. Nonetheless the people who actually appreciate the prequels tend to focus their attention on Anakin and Obi Wan. You can't listen to a single SW podcast covering the prequels in which the hosts don't devote most of their attention to Anakin. He drives discussions about that trilogy. There's a lot of people who never warmed to the character but he still is the most popular figure from the prequels.

It is as if you didn't even bother to read before you responded. I wrote there were a few exceptions. Did you not figure that Han was one of the exceptions I was referring to? Come on. Han Solo may be the most popular character from SW. It helped that he was arguably the most charismatic and the most good-looking. It helped that he was involved in the franchise's best romance and was the pilot of the franchise coolest and most iconic ship,. It helped that Harrison Ford delivered great performances and became the most famous post-Star Wars. It helped that Han had the best lines and that as a character he peaked in what most consider to be the best Star Wars film: The Empire Strikes Back.

But while Han Solo is the most popular character among the more casual fans, for diehards of SW it is all about Luke and his relationship with The Force. Leading up to TFA there was far more speculation among SW fans about what had been going on with Luke for the last nearly 30 yeas than there was about Han. With Han the main questions were about what his relationship with Leia was like and what was his connection to this new character Rey (father perhaps?). People had similar questions concerning Luke but the topic that really dominated talk about Luke was how much stronger he had grown with the Force, how great of a jedi did he become. You see no matter how great Han was conversations among SW fans tend to gravitate towards The Force, the light vs the dark side, jedis and sith, etc.

You think I wasn't aware of Rogue One either when I wrote about exceptions. Of course it helps that Jyn didn't have to compete against force sensitive characters for attention in that movie. Still Jyn runs falls short of Rey in terms of popularity in the SW fandom. Tell me why d you think that is. Both are new female leads roughly the same age who had a tough life before adulthood. Both are strong and capable. Both only have one film under their belt at this point. Yet one fascinates the fandom far, far more.

There have also been MORE than one of our trio of heroes in the previous trilogies who had a strong connection with the force even if they didn't necessarily use it. So why do you champion the consistency on one end but rush to dismiss the notion of being consistent on the other end? Did you think Rey such a fragile character that she would be overshadowed if she wasn't the only new hero with force abilities ?

Yes and no. Yes, we will most likely get just one young FS protagonist, just like in the OT, but not because "it is like in the OT and we are cynical corporation that cares only for formulaic filmmaking and producng revenue (insert evil laugh.)" In the OT being Force Sensitive was something special, something that audience members wanted to witness because of it exceptionality. In the Prequels being Force Sensitive wasn't anything special because basically every third character that appeared on screen fought with a lightsaber, could use Force Powers and do sick flips. If every second day you eat your favourite burger with time it loses its appeal. The same happens to applied Force Sensitiity in Star Wars.

Pretty much every notable character (except Padme who represented humanity) in the prequels was a Force user, that's part of the reason why they didn't work. "When everyone is special, no one is special." That's why Lucas felt he had to go even further to differentiate Anakin by making the Force itself impregnate Shmi just to make him standout among the thousands of Force users. Thousands of Force users was good for business, but it wasn't good for the storytelling. Good storytelling comes from contrasts and specific specializations, not redundant or interchangeable characters.

The trio in the PT was Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padme. The trio in the OT was Luke, Leia, and Han. The trio in the ST is Rey, Kylo Ren, and Finn. Kylo Ren is way bigger role than Poe Dameron, and a much bigger role than Darth Vader was in the OT in fact.

For Finn they need to further specialize what it is that he brings to the table that the other characters don't have. Humor and the gift of his smart mouth is one part of it that the others don't have. He's the greatest shot with a blaster. If Poe Dameron takes over for Leia as the Poe Dameron comics somewhat suggested, there's the opening to surpass what Poe Dameron was right there in the Resistance.

At least this is honest, but we're back to square one of this ceaseless debate. Being FS makes a character special and more FS characters makes that character less special but contradictorily a character doesn't need the force to be special...... honestly you guys aren't making any sense. If Rey was removed from the Force aspect of the storyline do you think her character attributes would stand on their own in terms of holding audience interest? No, of course you don't.

And honestly, this "human" character or representative of "humanity" phraseology is needlessly vague and inaccurate. Are Rey and Luke inhuman? nonsense. What you mean is that the story needs characters who are mundane/ordinary so that the incredibly talented characters can shine all the better.

Han was comic relief guys, you know it to be true, and perhaps Finn's fated to be the same. The story needs a jester right? But I'll be damned if I'm supposed to like it.

Man, I've never equated Star Wars being amazing because of there only being one force user on the protagonist side. I love there being multiple force users, and it doesn't negatively affect story-telling in anyway. I guess maybe if you go in to a story wanting wish fulfillment while living vicariously through the main character. Then I could see someone wanting the protagonist to be "special".

The Original Trilogy was perfect for the single force user as it worked very well in the context of the story. It did not work in the Force Awakens as its completely forced for the sake of a retro story.... and among other reasons that most people in this thread know so I don't need to say it.

    1. You are completely missing their point. Yes being FS makes you special. But it makes you less special if EVERYONE is. More force users = less special.

    2. Rey's abilities are inherently tied to the force so if she were not a force user, she likely would be without many of those abilities sans flying and bo fighting.

    3. It is not needless and it is not vague. Everyone in the PT was either emotionless robots or overly conflicted. Except Padme. Who wanted to see the best in Anakin when no one else would. She was the humanity of the prequels.

    4. You say this as though it's a bad thing. And this point here is why you shouldn't be taken serious. The "same fate as Han Solo", one of the most beloved protagonists in cinema history? One of the most iconic names and looks. One of the most quoted and imitated characters....is a bad thing? This is either an incredibly bad troll attempt you just have expectations beyond that of a reasonable

    Bull spit.

    1. There are clearly more force users. So strike one.

    2. It's not a "retro" story.

"only being one force user on the protagonist side"

But sure if you want to be a stickler, Obi Wan who died in the first movie and Leia sensing something two times over the course of 3 movies in the original trilogy... Happy?

If retro doesn't tickle your fancy, we can go with remake.
