This is the key for me. In and of itself, it might be good, and it might be bad. But if this is true, I'm worried it's an indication that they're not confident about this film, because of how vexed the production has been. If that's the case, I think it would be better for them to stick to their original vision rather than try to rescue the film with something like this.

I am fine with Vader being in the movie for the following reason, subject to a couple of caveats.

First, although Vader and Han may have met in comics taking place after ANH and before/during ESB, as far as I know (I do not read the comics) the first time Vader and Han meet up close and personal is for dinner at Cloud City in ESB (BTW, I don't really think Han "saw" Vader in ANH on the Death Star). Notice as soon as Han sees Vader he draws his blaster and fires several times - without hesitation. Contrast this reaction to Vader with the reaction of the Rebel Troopers on the Profundity in RO. The Rebels hesitate when they see Vader because to all of them he is a myth/legend/boogeyman - who is now very much real. So, I suspect Han has at least seen Vader in person and knows what Vader is capable of before ESB.

Second, caveat #1, in order for Vader's appearance to make sense, Han has to be mixed up in something of great importance to the Empire. Han cannot be doing just regular nickel and dime stuff. Even though the Empire may not have a great presence in the Outer Rim, all that spice that is smuggled doesn't stay in the Outer Rim, it is distributed to planets, like Coruscant where the Empire very much does have a strong presence. If Han frees Chewie from the spice mines on Kessel perhaps that could draw the attention of the Empire?

Third, caveat #2, Vader's role should merely be a cameo. Clearly, he cannot be the antagonist in this movie, nor do I expect him to be. His appearance should simply accomplish the goal of Han seeing what Vader is capable of or simply knowing he exists and that is it.

LFL has been guilty of the gratuitous cameo that does not fit the story (looking at you C3-PO & R2, and Dr. Evazan in RO) but I seriously doubt they do this with Vader. If he appears in the Solo movie it will be because it fits the story. Vader is powerful in small doses, using him in an irrelevant cameo diminishes that power and I trust that Lawrence Kasdan and Ron Howard know that.

Putting Darth Vader in would be a desperate measure, a last gasp hope that a credible character like Darth Vader, with a large fan base, will distract from what could be a very weak Han Solo film with a very weak story and very weak characters, a bit like Rogue One. Remember that the only bits you recall from Rogue One are the Vader bits which were stitched on at the end of the film.

personally, i'm looking forward to the part where Vader benevolently gifts a baby rancor to the fat guy in Jabba's palace and Han has to team up with Maul to collect the monster from their contacts on Dantooine, 3PO and R2, and then smuggle it to Tatooine.

the Vader scenes in R1 were weak af. that choking joke was so cringey. don't even get me started on Tarkin. what a mess.

if they want to throw in some cameos then include Greedo, Jabba, and Boba Fett. no one else makes sense, or is needed or wanted.

i mean jeezus, they already have Lando, Chewie, and the Falcon: we get it, we're watching Star Wars.

It seems that KK and the powers that be want to make sure every Star Wars film is successful. Rogue One included Vader and it was a financial success so I think thats all their concerned with; however I hope they use Vader adequately. I remember the dark times when GL stated there would be no more Star Wars films after ROTJ, so for me I welcome every film hopefully down the line they will make films that delve deeper into the Star Wars lore instead of staying within the OT.

Kind of cool, but sort of overkill.

I think it would actually be cooler if an inquisitor was in the solo movie it would be nice to see one in live action

Inquisitor is far more likely for the Obi-Wan movie.

I'd like to see a Krennic type. An obsessed Imperial officer, trying to stop the illegal spice trade. The Falcon is his white whale, he basically kills himself trying to capture it, and goes mad in the process. Vader would be a good motivation for him to succeed.

Vader is quickly becoming to LFL what Legolas became to Peter Jackson.....because we all know that nothing ever happened in the history of Middle Earth without Legolas being there......

Great idea. Krennic was gold in Rogue One. An Imperial officer that acts remotely as crazed as Krennic did over accomplishment, would be fun to watch as Han swindles him at every turn

Han's little speech in ANH on the Falcon, when obi wan is talking to Luke about the force, made it seem like he never heard of the force from what I remember. I would think if he had a run in with Vader, he would remember that and believe in it already

I kinda expected to see him, along with Jabba and Boba Fett. Disney Star Wars toy sales have dropped by 50%. They need to get them back up.

Famous wookie gets in trouble (like in TCW), Empire officers (all "arrogant as hell") reign with iron fist, smugglers and scoundrels run the Galaxy as we can see them described in The New Dawn and Catalyst, no force users (wielders), just Empire's tyranny.
