    http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/ne...to-score-the-untitled-han-solo-movie#/slide/1

Lucasfilm announced today that composer John Powell, who may be best known for his memorable soundtracks to the Matt Damon Bourne series, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda (1 and 2), and How to Train Your Dragon (1 and 2), will be lifting the baton to score the upcoming young Han Solo movie, due in theaters next year.

Powell, a London native, has written music for dozens of films since moving to the US in 1997, earning an Academy Award nomination for his stirring score to How to Train Your Dragon. Powell is only the third composer to be welcomed into the exclusive family of Star Wars live-action music writers, which includes the legendary John Williams (the eight Skywalker saga movies) and Michael Giacchino, who scored last December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The untitled Han Solo movie will be scored in the style of the original Star Wars movies but retain Powell’s distinctive voice.

The untitled young Han Solo movie, which is being directed by Ron Howard, will be released on May 25, 2018.

I want the guido ( i can call him that since I'm from Jersey 2 ) who did R1 to also do HS.

We don't need different composers & directors 4 every movie.

I've maintained hope and enthusiasm for this movie through all the off-screen drama and the endless negativity toward its subject matter, but this just about finishes my giving a crap. There is absolutely nothing distinctive about John Powell's music that's worthy of the Star Wars name, and for me at least, the music is 50% of what makes a SW film work.

    Color me depressed :(

UPDATE: listened to the How To Train Your Dragon score in its entirety and it's not bad. With some luck this guy can pull it off.

I'm sure that when the time comes to score the Han Solo film, Michael Giacchino will be busy with scoring The Incredibles II and since he's been tied that film to ages, and his score to the first Incredibles is as film-defining as John Williams' score to all Saga films, he won't be able to do it.

Remember that in the VAST majority of films, directors do not want the music to overshadow the film. Star Wars is different in that regard. I would suspect Star Wars presents opportunities for composers to fully embrace their creative juices. I also gather a majority of today's composers find John Williams to be an inspiration. I'm confident that most composers except for Hans Zimmer would be able to put out a quality Star Wars score.

Rogue One had aspects of Williams' influence, but the score and music was pure Giacchino - just listen to Lost and its stunning how much some of it sounds alike. Ron Howard has frequently used composers like Williams and late James Horner to add a memorable soundtrack to the film. He's not afraid of the music taking away from the film. I trust his choice in composers.

John Powell seems like a decent choice. I have to go and listen to some of his stuff, because I can't remember much of what he's done. I remember some themes from Shrek, which actually were very good. :) I have to say, though, he instantly feels like a more inspired choice than some of the top names working in Hollywood currently.

I'm pretty indifferent to Powell being chosen to score the film: on the one hand, YAY, we have a composer, but on the other hand, I'm not seeing - or hearing, should I say - much of a reason to be excited about this decision.

Of course, I'll wait to see what he turns out and hold off judgement until then. My problem with Giacchino - even as someone who acknowledges that he only had four weeks to score Rogue One and thoroughly enjoyed the music - is a problem I see applying to Powell too, which is that the composers seem more awe-struck by Williams' work than the actors/directors are upon finding out about their involvement with the films.

I seriously hope Kevin Kiner makes the leap to a live-action SW composition sooner rather than later, as he clearly maintains a smart balance of respect for and innovation of John Williams' great works, and I've yet to hear a single piece of his that sounds like he's overcome by awe. The guy's already confident in this space, so I can only imagine that the real reason he hasn't been asked to score this film - or one before - is because he's already hard at work on Rebels.

To be honest, John Powell is the 4th.........people seem to forget about Desplat. He was replaced by MG for Rogue One, thus making Powell the fourth and not the third. I think Powell will do a great job with this movie .

The Bourne scores are great - esp the first one which had a John Barry bond influence with its own twist. Powell will be just fine. Can't wait...

For those disappointed by this...don't judge his suitability by Bourne! That would make a terrible Star Wars score. Listen to his animated stuff, How to Train Your Dragon 2 especially.

Perfect choice! The best possible outcome, I'd say. Powell is an excellent tune-smith, has great dramatic instincts, and can write large-scale symphony music that fits into the Star Wars universe without simply aping John Williams' style (*cough* Rogue One *cough*).

It's great that they have the confidence to go with somebody other than Giacchino (by far the most overrated and overly prevalent composer working today IMHO).

Ya know what folks .... i'm sittin' here at home (now that i got a day and a half to DO that) and listenin' to Rogue One soundtrack....
    Gimmie John Powell !

Rebel Force Radio Aug 4 episode had some GOOD, Deep, Honest observations on John's music from his various scores as may sound something similar to what we might hear.

Even though i didn't expect or have interest in a "Han Solo" film .... Well dammit, I wanna hear what he's got

He's excellent. Unless Disney meddles or the film is unscorable, he'll do a really good job.
