Yes, we get glimpses of moments which look like A New Hope.. the lighting was well done and the practical effects were good in places.. but it's clear to me that Gareth Edwards was not the right director. Not only was Orson Krennic a very boring villain, but Ben Mendelsohn overacted badly in this film, like he was given no direction at all. Terrible villain.

In fact, I found no excitement in any of these characters or the actors' performances.. I place most of that blame on Gareth Edwards. This felt like a boring BBC drama.

Forrest Whitaker was also bad in this movie, so many people found his acting to be over the top and couldn't wait for his character to be killed off..

So the only saving grace for Rogue One is the space battle (which is more down to the writing and the special effects team) and the Darth Vader sequence at the end (which was added in reshoots)

I believe the stories of executives calling the first cut "tone deaf" to what Star Wars is.. because it really was. Yes, it nailed the darkness of moments like Cantina scene, and Tarkin/Vader in the meeting room on the Death Star.. but it failed miserably at being charming and memorable.

..and the music. Good God what happened there? It's terrible! I am ashamed that I threw Michael Giacchino's hat in the ring for these films for when John Williams retired.. he needs to stick to TV shows. It honestly sounded like music from Star Wars: Rebels, remastered for the big screen.. it was so cheesy how he reversed themes from the originals to say: "Hey, it's Star Wars.. with a twist!"

The Dr Evazan and Ponda Baba cameo SUCKED. Evazan looked nothing like he did in A New Hope (set one day later) and that was the moment which screamed fan fiction.. should have been left on the cutting room floor, burned and stamped out by Chewbacca.

Another bad moment for me (on rewatch) was one of the first shots of the film, where we see Jyn's mother in the kitchen and the camera slowly focuses on some blue milk on the table. It's so obsessed with giving 40 year old nerds nostalgia rushes.. it's embarrassing. This is the hipster's version of Star Wars, making a big deal out of stuff which Lucas thought up in 5 seconds and moved on from.

Wasn't feeling the new black suited stormtroopers either, makes no sense why we wouldn't see them again in the original trilogy.. and they could have edited James Earl Jones' voice better too. Just another sloppy job there.. could have cut out the bass from his voice to have him sound younger.

6/10 for me at best (seriously, i'm stretching with that) and I really liked The Force Awakens. Please let the Han Solo spinoff be a lot better.

Although I watched and enjoyed the film twice in a movie theater, I still haven't touched and watched my 3D Blu-ray of it (and I do have a home theater with a 9 feet wide 21:9 screen).

I agree, there is too much fan service in the sense that we are being pushed to see certain objects or characters. Same with TFA and the seeker ball aboard the Falcon. I thought this was somewhat strange as Rogue One also managed to without fan service, i.e. putting things into the background so they could be missed the first time (like the probe droid in Jedha City), but didn't "cry" for attention.

Curiously, one of the reasons is the space battle which is IMHO the lamest I have watched in the 6 previous SW films. That one of the Star Destroyers is taken out by apparently "new" ion torpedos (a very nice historic analogy to the surprise success of the torpedo bomber in WW II) was fine, but the other one just sat around, made his two forward guns (what about the other 6?) spit a little and in general I couldn't help wonder what all these larger Alliance ships were actually good for (I would have expected the 'Gallofree' transports to be used as fire ships against Scarif's orbital Station as originally suggested to use them against Star Destroyers or Death Star II in Kahn's ROJ novelization).

This was a wasted opportunity, they could have just used the fighters and two or three medium ships (so one of these could move the remaining Star Destroyer) instead of editing so much dead weight into the space battle.

But the scene that probably took me out the most was this one:

    rogue-one-movie-screencaps_com-10489.jpg

The landing platform officer saw the officer entering (and in the company of two stormtroopers)

    rogue-one-movie-screencaps_com-10640.jpg

He MUST have noticed that this was no longer the same officer (and why is there now a droid instead of the two stormtroopers?) and - to make things worse - has eye-to-eye contact with Captain Andor (who didn't even consider to shave quickly...)

    rogue-one-movie-screencaps_com-10658.jpg

I'm confident that this particular scene could have been setup or edited better to provide this scene with more credibility (no, I don't accept a rationalization that the officer who opened the door somewhat cheated on his eye exam :p)

I've been a fan since 1986. It's my favourite Star Wars movie, probably watched it 20-30 times this year since getting it on Blu-ray. I never ever thought I'd have a Star Wars movie that tops the OT for me, but it did it, it channeled my childhood as a Star Wars fan and re-affirmed it into an adult way that 35-year old me enjoys in a different way. So I don't agree.

But if you don't like it, that's cool. I don't like all the albums by my favourite musicians for example either, nor do I expect to.

The scene with Cassian taking the imperial officer's uniform and never being noticed never took me out of the movie, in fact it tied in perfectly with Agent Kallus' own dissolution with the Empire. They're all faceless to one another; they're cold and sterile people who use each other as leverage within the military never once caring for the individual wearing that uniform or who they could be hurting. You described it like a movie goof, I took as a critical statement about the humanity of the Empire. But you can even take it a step further into the real world - just look up the Derrin Brown 'asking for directions' videos; it's a real social experiment, when confronted with unfamiliar individuals, people associate basic perception of identity, such as just the role or query, over their actual faces or individuality. In this case, the map and the directions become their identity, just like the shuttle inspection duty was Cassian's.

But hey maybe that's just me finding that sort of detail enjoyable :)

I don’t understand the hate. Rogue One scatched an itch I didn’t even know I had. It tops both TFA and TLJ because it does things neither of those things took the time to do: build worlds and explore the grit of the Star Wars universe. Also, it looks gorgeous, and despite people’s criticisms, I love the characters of Rogue One and think even think Krennic is a better villain than Snoke

OK I am a 53 yr old SW fan, I was 13 when I saw original SW in the theater. Huge R1 fan. Loved the characters, the worlds, the “grit” as was mentioned above and also loved Giacchino’s score tremendously. His imperial suite is awesome, just as good as JW. And the final sequence from “prepare a boarding party” to the end of the movie to me is one of the top 3 sequences EVER in SW, hands down. Jyn/Cassian’s ultimate sacrifice on the beach....the score during this is tremendous. the all out single focus of the rebels and the mad rush to get the plans onto the tantive 4.....the music stops and the wailing of the siren before vader ignites his blade. tremendous work by GE!!! the seamless transition to ANH.....incredible work and this is why it is my #2 favorite SW movie after ANH......

....OK there is more. How about an Imperial Officer with a backstory.....never before been done in any SW movies. Just an endless line of Pietts and Needas and Ozzels whose entire vocabulary consisted of "yes Lord Vader". How about the origins of the rebellion.....rebel spies and not "following the rules" all the time. Sometimes ugly things have to be done in the name of the rebellion. The rebels did not agree all the time....and why this movie resonated with me so much, was because as a military man (26 years US Air Force service) sometimes the mission comes before all else. This movie to me was dedicated to the grunt infantry of the rebels....the special forces soldiers who toiled behind the lines and never get the glory. Really put the WAR in Star Wars.....looked and sounded so much like a classic war movie.

Rogue One is the sort of film that's dependent on the metaphor, which is why The Last Jedi is far better

Ahhh but it is your perception of the reality of Rogue One that has you fooled. It exists entirely within its own reality, showing why it is superior to the metaphor of TLJ...

I agree. The only thing that makes Rogue One dependent on the metaphor are the last scenes on Tantive IV. But then again, it's supposed to act as a retroactive prequel to ANH. Still, it's able to stand on its own legs.

Strangely enough, I find it one of the best SW films made recently, and partly because of the fate of the protagonists.

I agree, I give them a lot of credit for having the balls to kill every one of their new heroes. Them surviving (like they were apparently supposed to) would have ruined the movie for me. The entire 3rd act of Rogue One damn near perfect.

I can really understand the people that doesn't like RO. In the cinema, I found it really horrible. A half year later, I got the DVD as a movie present ("Hey, Dennis, you like STAR WARS, don't you?") and gave it another chance. At the second time, when I knew, where the yourney would lead into, I could live much better with the ways, the movie took. Since then, I watched it various times with friends who haven't seen the movie in the theatres and some of them really loved it and some really hated me for inviting them to watch RO.

For me, it's a good movie, but maybe the worst SW-movie. It has got many things that could be made better - the beginning of the movie with all the different planets is a little bit too confusing, the battle at the end is way too long and some of the fanservice was really too much. In this case, it is like almost every SW movie. I mean: I love the PT, but I would be the last who says, that they are perfect: The dialogues between Padmé and Anakin, the "story" of Episode II... there are many things I see why some people don't like the movies (even the OT movies make many mistakes), but: I really love them. Every SW movie has got great scenes, that can make me forgive and forget all the things I don't like in it. In RO, such "epic scenes" are missing.

What do I mean with "epic scenes"? That's not easy. I mean, RO has its memorable scenes: Darth Vader, of course - and not only the last scene... I really enjoyed his meeting with Krennic, too -, but even they aren't a Duel of the Fates, a Binary Sunset or a father-vs--son-battle. In another thread I mentioned, that Episode II, the - for me - worst SW-episode has its "epic scene", when Padmé and Anakin confess their love and are brought into the arena and "Across the stars" is played with all the possible power...

A little problem could be the music. Yeah, it was a good idea not to hire John Williams but Michael Giacchino, and it was a good idea too make the music "different"... but then again, the great scenes, where the music overrun the whole living room, aren't there. Yeah, sometimes also the music in RO has its moments, especially after Jyn's death, but in my opinion, it hasn't got the same power like the "music scenes" in the episodes. It's good, but there's no other "epicness factor" in the movie that is able to replace them.

So my conclusion could be: I like that RO has another conception than the episodes concerning his "epicness factor", but then again, I love the conception of the episodes and because of this conception the episodes are (and I mean all of them) my favourite movies.
