There is a reason I put this in TLJ section... Bare with me.

It just dawned on me that this movie answered to why Anakin looks young in the new Canon ROTJ movies. It is how he sees himself, and thus how he projects himself in the force.

Now, to The Last Jedi stuff.. When Luke force projects himself to Crate, we get a glimpse into Luke's head and see how he sees himself after all of this time. I would wager that this is what he looked like when he first landed on Ahch-to, and probably the last time he viewed himself as being a Jedi. So in a nutshell, you can project yourself to look how you want maybe. This opens up where Obi-Wan could return as a force Ghost at some point and look like young Obi-wan. It also opens the theory up to Snoke being a projection, and looking nothing like what we have seen so far. A lot of stuff to think about.

    ^^^

Does make the OT canon Anakin that George did sort of more explainable (even if I myself still prefer Sebastian Shaw as the Force Ghost)

Hayden was a great Anakin. It was the directing and script that made him so loathed. Lucas wanted him to speak in the same tempo and monotone that Vader spoke for consistency. Hayden has been fantastic in other movies. The poor guy just did what he was told to do.

Hayden was horrible to me, but the dialogues helped to make him worse. The most important charater of the PT and GL ruined him.

Regarding the Force Ghost, I took it as a projection of Luke at the last moment that he still felt like a Jedi. It was Luke in the moment before he almost succumbed to the Dark Side and killed Ben in his sleep. The beard and hair were done that way to make a point methinks.

I think that is what really broke Luke. Not that Ben went dark, but that Luke was prepared to murder.

Interesting. I tought Luke appeared like that way because Kylo and Leia saw him for the last time with that visual.

Possibly, but Luke never met Anakin, so how did he know what he would look like. That is the only hole in that theory, and why I didn't leap to that in the original post. Lots of questions that I fear may not be answered on the big screen.

Ohhhh but that new Anakin at the end of ROTJ to me dont even count! That was some GL madness. I like the old Sebastian Shaw even if Hayden's ghost is.consider the canon.

Thought the same thing. Really cool how they explained that little detail that a lot of fans get butt hurt about.

I posted this elsewhere prior to this thread going up, but I’m glad we have somewhere to talk about this, because I think it’s important too, but I see it a little bit differently, at least at the moment.

Luke isn’t just projecting himself like some sort of hologram across the galaxy: what we’re seeing is what will go on to be/is his Force spirit. Remember: despite Luke sparking hope once more, the film makes the point very clearly that he is no longer a Jedi, even if he still has the best of intentions.

What I’m suggesting is that, as a result, his Force spirit, like his father’s, will be an image of his younger self, from when he was last a Jedi (same appearance as in the flashback to the destruction of the Temple, specifically), which suggests that eternal consciousness in particular is something that can only be achieved by someone who dies as, or has been, a Jedi, as well as being taught about this particular path. Though the Force flows through everyone and everything, I think that the fact that the Jedi in particular attempted to actively preserve peace and justice of the galaxy and the use of the Force makes them the only group worthy of becoming a Force spirit in the first place: if worse comes to worse, the Jedi and their positive attributes and teachings can be preserved in this way, and they can continue to guide the fate of the galaxy beyond the realm of mortals.

I think that the midichlorian count and Force sensitivity of the Skywalkers accounts for why Anakin and Luke might be capable of this despite a lack of evidence to suggest that they were ever taught about how to achieve such a state.

Not to sound like a dick, but isn't that what I implied? Seriously, just making sure I'm not missing something. Really don't want to come off negatively.

You’re not coming off negatively at all, so don’t worry about it! :) as I said in my earlier post, there’s quite a bit of overlap in our thoughts (I think that we’re definitely in the same ballpark), but there are a few nuances which are slightly different. And honestly, I wouldn’t mind if you or I were right about the nuances: I think that they both neatly tie-up the younger Anakin knot, and are both interesting possibilities (I really! hope I’m not coming off arrogant here).

The way I understand it, you’re saying that Anakin chose to project himself as his younger self, and Luke is choosing to project his younger self too.

What I’m suggesting, which I think is a bit different to your suggestion, is that what we’re seeing on Crait is/will be Luke’s Force spirit: it is showing us when he was last a Jedi, which, incidentally, is what we’re shown with Anakin too. They’re not choosing to show themselves this way, and I’m suggesting that only Jedi can become Force spirits as they are/were protectors of peace and justice in the galaxy, and the balance of the Force.

Actually that's the opposite of what happened. Hayden kept doing that and GL kept telling him "not yet, that's when he's Vader" to no avail.

So Luke is a force ghost before he even dies. That sounds exhausting!!

I think there's a chance that Luke isn't dead in the traditional SW sense. I think he's mastered how to move between the netherworld of the Force and becoming corporeal. It would be neat to see him return in 9.
