One of the better things the PT gave us was Ewan McGregor as Obi-wan Kenobi. The way he mirrored Alec Guiness' performance while creating something new and different really made you believe in the character. Since then, fans have been interested in seeing Ewan McGregor return to the role of Obi-wan in one way or another.

Now there seems to be an Obi-wan anthology film in the works (whereas Ewan McGregor I believe is more or less confirmed to be returning to the role). But...what if this was not the case? If McGregor for some reason couldn't or didn't want to return, who would you cast as Obi-wan in this spin-off film?

    Here are my contenders:

If this Obi-wan was closer chronologically to ROTS:

    Kenneth Branagh

    Jason Isaacs

    Kevin McKidd

    David Wenham

    Sean Astin

If this Obi-wan was closer chronologically to ANH:
    Ray Liotta

    Iain Glen

    Christopher Eccleston

    Tim Roth

    Gary Oldman

Some of these actors fit the role more than others, but if we did live in an alternate universe where one of these men was playing Obi-wan, you would hear no complaints from me.

    Slow day, huh? ;)

I'm kidding that's actually a good question. While some look more like Guiness than others I would probably settle for an actor who I think can pull off almost any role which is Gary Oldman. Jason Isaacs does share certain facial features with Guiness even though he would probably require a prosthetic nose to increase the likeliness.

This is a very clear case of only doing the movie if Ewan returns. The only situation where you would do an Obi Wan film without Ewan is if it was pre-Phantom Menace and he was a teenager. I'll instead pretend the question is "Who would you cast as Obi wan in the reboot?" If that was the case I'd go Kenneth Branagh.

Wenham and Glenn are both great picks that I've never really considered before.

As much as it would be amazing for McGregor to return, having an entirely new actor could make the character feel like he's at a different time in his life, and not just McGregor aged up a bit. It could also make the character feel too segmented, being played by so many different actors over time. Not really sure how I feel either way about that yet.

Agreed. If it isn't Ewan, then don't make it.

If it's not Ewan MacGregor, I want someone younger. Someone who can play Obi Wan as a padawan back when he first met Satine. Not entirely sure who I'd want for that though.

If it's not MacGregor, this simply shouldn't be made. Just look at my avatar and tell me he isn't one of the greatest casting decisions in SW.

Now, if we had to play an hypothetical game, then Kenneth Branagh would be the only way to go.

But no, let's not do it like that.

It has to be Ewan no doubt about it. Like the others said if it’s not hi, don’t make it at all. It would ruin everything. It would be a different voice. I just couldn’t deal with that. :D

He's played him since 1999 so it will be Ewan for sure.

I wonder how bad the Internet rage will be if it's not Ewan. Assuming the Obi-Wan movie still exists.

Tom Burke from The Musketeers. He would be perfect...if we're excluding Ewan McGregor.

I think and feel it would be Ewan. While they certainly could place the movie anywhere along the time line, I don't see the purpose in placing it so far out that Ewan wouldn't be right for the role. I don't see having a 3rd person playing his character when we already have someone who has played his younger character in a excellent manner that is highly popular and was well received.

If they want to put makeup on Ewan and touch him up with CGI to make him look closer to Alec Guinness, they can. This is Ewan's role. If they'll bring back Jimmy Smits for Bail Organa, they'll bring back Ewan for Obi-Wan.

I would cast Ewan McGregor with lots of fake white hair.
