I have always liked both. My mom loved TOS Trek, it was always on. I really fell in love with Star Wars. I liked both I always liked Wars more. For many years in the late 80's-mid 90's Trek was the only game in town. Farscape and Bab 5 never really moved me. After DS9 though Trek diminished considerably I recently watched through the Enterprise series it was pretty good though it ended in a rush.

Was there a rivalry yes but it was far more good natured than Fanboys showed.

Lol! You know what's great? Upon reading this without thinking about it my mind gave a slightly more nasal voice to the Star Trek fan and a more bass voice to the Star Wars fan from your example!

Simplest answer: YES, but joy as extreme because movies always exaggerate for filmmaking to prove a point.

Star Trek is like professor fink from Simpsons...SW is rich and fulfilled fans that are smart and level-headed.

    To Me:

I Loved Star Wars Movies from the begining (i remembering seing ROTJ ith 5-6 Years and since then my life was SW all the way)
Never liked or understood Star Trek Movies (actually liked alot Khan movie and the other one after it)

I've read almost every single book or comic about Star Wars, played every single SW videogame and owned all the SW Toys in my youth.
Never read or owened anything from Star Trek.

Never liked the Star Trek Universe TV Shows, so i almost didn't watch any of them.
Saw all Star Wars Clone Wars and Rebels episodes, and i really don´t like the Clone Wars but think they're better than Phantom Menace Movies.

I'm a Star Wars Fan, did i ever hold a grudge against Star Trek..............NO (because i never care about Star Trek)

Sorry, but I'm not laughing - it's an exaggerated comparison but I'm sad to say that it is essentially true, based on my personal experience at the Trek BBS. In Star Trek canon you have dogma, yet already when you challenge (non-canon) assumptions some start throwing stones at you. Some bullies actually managed to have two threads closed (where people wanted to discuss a theory) because they got vocal about it and the moderator didn't like the noise (guess who got the infraction warnings....). It get's too close to religious fervor which is one of the reasons I redirected my attention to my first love.

Coming here I expected the same, but to my positive surprise I encountered many open-minded Star Wars fans that are rather interested in discussing and approaching subjects from a different point of perspective than preaching dogma! (please let us all make sure it stays that way!)

I'm both an old Star Trek and Star Wars fossile, always thought I liked "the best of both worlds". Back in 1982 when both major German Star Wars fan clubs merged, I was told I couldn't get the position of editor for the new fanzine because of my involvement of being editor-in-chief of a Star Trek fanzine, too (coming from two people that had started German Star Trek fandom and changed sides when Star Wars came out!).

Star Trek fans, then, were not happy about Star Wars because it cannibalized the Star Trek fanbase. IMHO this has greatly changed over the years as Star Trek had a comeback and so did Star Wars and both icons of scifi culture have finally found some kind of equilibrium in which to co-exist.

I was always, and still am, a fan of both! I lean way more toward Star Wars because I was 6 years old when it came out. I remember watching Star Trek re-runs on Saturday afternoons before Creature Feature came on, and I had both a star trek communicator and phaser gun. The main difference was Star Trek was more "cerebral" and about "talking things out". For a six year old that tends to be "boring"! When Star Wars came along it was about the 3 R's: Rocket ships, Robots and Ray guns, which was far more appealing to kids. However, it wasn't until 8th or 9th grade that I noticed fans were divided up into camps about Star Trek and Star Wars. The "science guys" were almost always for Trek, but there were some who sided with Star Wars.

I am definitely a fan of both. I've been watching Star Trek and Star Wars for nearly all my life and I cannot prefer one of the other. I think both fandoms can overly be improved, but I tend to only hang out with fans who don't tend to get overly heated. The Cantina is a good example for this, so far.

Of course, it's possible because it is possible to like both sci-fi (Star Trek) and fantasy (Star Wars). Besides ships and space, they have very little in common. :)

From my point of view Star Trek is meant for an optimistic view of the literal future but it hinders itself from growing too much...Star Wars has infinite possibilities for where it can launch from which is what makes it more alluring for s lot of fans z

I regurgitate anything sci-fi , so yes , i like them both, of course sw is , by far, the number 1 , actually they are not even in the same league, as sw beeing movies and i like st mostly for the tv shows , from st movies i liked only a couple, the one with the borq queen and the first directed by JJ and now curiously watching st Discovery.

i like both but mostly just TOS: the other Trek stuff i don't dislike, but never really got into it.

Trek and Wars are also really the only sci-fi/space opera things i really like.
there are one-off movies i enjoy, but it's not a genre in which i have much interest.

and i don't find the need to pick one or the other or even to draw comparisons; i don't understand the competition.

To answer the question in one sentence: May the force live long and prosper!

I consider myself as both a Star Wars Fan and a Trekkie. Star Wars is more about action, Star Trek is more about thinking. Tech-stuff is awesome, this is something I really like in Star Trek. Star Wars has, on the other side, more fantasy-related stuff like the force, which is quite cool, too. So it depends on my mood what I prefer to watch.

And by the way, Firefly/Serenity is great and one of my favorite series (together with TNG).

    NEVER!!

But joking aside, sure! I think a person will always lean more on one side of the fence than the other, but they can love both easily. My dad's a great example of that: since I was a kid, we'd always quote ESB and a little of ROTJ back and forth to each other, and that will probably never change. But one of his favorite shows (and the first major gift I remember giving him) is Star Trek TOS. He quotes TNG at me too sometimes, although I never catch what it means. One of our goals is to watch more of TNG and DS1 together when I come back home. So I always see him as a Trekkie, even if he's a major OT fan.

On the subject of Firefly, I actually watched Serenity first! It was always playing on Saturdays at the comicbook store I went to as a kid, and I eventually bought the Blu-Ray. A couple years after watching the movie, I finally sat down and watched the show proper. Loved it ever since.

I have been both for many years, starting with reruns of ST: TOS before the mid-'70s followed by the first SW movie a few years later, and then Alien together with Mad Max. At the same time, there were shows like Sapphire and Steel, Space: 1999, UFO, and more.

After watching all TNG and TOS episodes on netflix, now I am enjoying DS9, another great ST series.
Hard to explain how long it took to me to start to watching these great series.

I remember watching reruns of Star Trek TOS on our black n white tv in the late 70s. When TNG came out I really enjoyed watching many seasons of that. I think I lost ambition once DS9 first aired. I did like the films too. But I can happily say I am very fond of Star Wars. . . . and that won't change, ever. :)
