This is the way its going to go.... haha :p Recently James Cameron said if the first new Avatar film doesn't do well, they won't be anymore, point blank, so if its successful after all these years, and its well received financially and critically, there will be more.

RJ and LFL are aware of the TLJ backlash (in a recent Entertainment Tonight interview RJ laughed off the backlash because its the way of film making) but its not stopping them from continuing on with their slate. If RJ's first film in the trilogy bombs, which is unlikely, at that point, LFL might rethink their strategy but for now RJ gets along with KK and LFL so all is well.

I'd say 50-50. If he's to be believed, he hasn't even started working on it yet. I don't think it'll get canceled. If anything it'll get handed to another director.

The only way it'll be handed over to another director is if there is a problem with the story on a whole. I do believe that KK will be a bit more critical this time around but if the story works I don't see him getting booted off the project.

They purposely wanted a film that would consolidate a new generation of fans. Alienating some of the old ones is collateral damage. They aren't stupid people, they must have foreseen this.

But it is unnecessary. The idea that something new must alienate lovers of something old is an absolutely false dichotomy. The Force Awakens managed to bring in a ton of new fans (like myself!) but also did not have a fraction of the backlash that TLJ had. The biggest criticism is that it was too similar to ANH. But, the answer to that should be a 30* turn, not 180*, ya know? .... not that TLJ was 180* ... but a few parts of it were. Like the humor, the use of Hux, the continued disuse of Phasma, the lack of struggle for Rey, the portrayal of Luke, etc.

    That's not what dichotomy means.

And you missed my point like the other guy did. They didn't do it to alienate people but they knew it would BECAUSE YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE and there are so many whiners out there. They knew that and they don't care because you are not important to them. They're running a business not a service for guys going through a mid life crisis.

Nobody is missing any points you're just reaching for justification. I'm sorry but if you think Lucasfilm had this grand plan of pissing off a handful of star wars fans in hopes of gaining new fans you're wrong. They couldn't even make 2 cohesive films from TFA to TLJ. They just made a film about Han Solos past that nobody asked for. If you think they thought that hard about what this movie was gonna do to people you're wrong. And I also know this because Lucasfilm didn't know what RJ was gonna write until it was written. Just because they approved it doesn't mean that's what they expected and hoped for. Why piss off anyone? Why not just make as many people as possible happy and make more revenue?

    OH MY GOD.

    Nobody is missing any points.

    *Misses point AGAIN.

I never said there was a grand plan to piss people off. Never mind cohesive films, you can't write a cohesive forum post.

Apart from the fact that Luke on his own at the first Jedi Temple came straight out of George Lucas's treatment for episode seven, they knew what he was writing because he was constantly meeting with KK and the story group and running ideas by them.
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 8, 2018 ---
Do you think they didn't know what the film was going to be about until it was finished? Is that how you think the industry works?

Look. I don't wan't to be the spoiled sport here but I have got to be honest with myself. I felt the priceless magic of star wars in TFA. Remember that second teaser? Oh my. I didn't get that feeling from this movie. IMO star wars has a simple formula that makes it work and that formula is what provides for the viewer that feeling. I didn't think it was a BAD movie. I thought it was .......odd. Instead of sticking to the sw formula, IMO it seemed to break it. It's a good thing for star wars to have open minded directors, but I think they should have wen't with the more traditional star wars etiquette and hired a director that would have delivered a classic by the books middle act. They could have used RJ for a spin off or just hired him for a non saga series from the get go (keeping in mind that it was TLJ that got him the trilogy gig in the first place). Am I appreciative for TLJ? Yes. It was awesome seeing Luke and Yoda together again. But all in all I think it missed the mark.

I think Disney is being smart and covering their a## by hiring the GOT writers for a new trilogy and the timing of it seems to suggest this. They announce this new trilogy at the height of TLJ backlash? Hey I could be totally and completely wrong here but we are in fact speculating right? Time will tell. Perhaps I'm just too much of a sw traditionalist. I'm an "Empire child" after all. For me and many others like myself, a "unique" star wars film is in perhaps the fight choreography, lightsaber colors, ships, aliens, planets, a compelling story with MIND BLOWING twists. We need saber combat. We need to cheer the good guys on and cry when they die, not be caught in perplexed limbo while viewing climactic scenes. STAR WARS IS SIMPLE!!!!!! But when they go and start getting all weird with it by taking it way left field, what they meant as creative good will and intentions then backfires.

Having said all this to say: If in fact is DOES get cancelled, I won't lose any sleep over it and I won't be that surprised. There are plenty of talented writers and directors Disney can hire. They won't lose any money if they cancel it.

The money is not the problem here in SW Universe, in my opinion (and yours I guess ;P )
It has to be a very very very bad movie (with a very bad promotion) to make less than 700-800 million. And that's still a lot of money for a production of 200 million budget.
1.300 million is a lot of money, yes, (really insane, the 9th of all-time) but judging this kind of production and the estimation, TLJ probably could have won more.

If TLJ has made 700 less million than TFA probably means 2 things:

-People "killed the franchise" with TFA (which I really doubt with 2.000 million), at least i didn't see such radical comments like TLJ has received. The criticism was more as a remake, not as a bad movie.
-TLJ was not as good as TFA and more people has not seen TLJ as many times as TFA. That's obvious.

With the potential to make the same or more money than TFA, probably it could mean something for LF, specially with future projects.

I think LF really trust in Rian but I also think there is a minor probability to cancel it.
For now, It seems is like LF was waiting this division before TLJ premiere, and in attempt to not give more criticism to the movie (and a bigger decrease), they gave the news of another saga with Johnson (and the returning of J.J.) Is what it seems from outside, from some people perspective.

I think the real test will be the first movie of this new Rian's saga (if they don't cancel before with a bad previous feedback). If the company estimates earn more than 1300 but it makes 700 (still a lot of money), i think they will change the politics of the new saga. At this moment, It seems there is the sensation that a lot of people will "punish" Rian with his new Saga. Probably LF will have this in mind before giving the green light. Who knows...

I think we can agree that the big audiences pay a lot of money for silly blockbusters with bad dialogs, overacting, lack of emotion and naturally, bad scripts, overused humor and cgi, and chaotic directing styles, what SW really don't need ever.

It wasn't a surprise that TLJ made less money than TFA. Second parts of trilogies usually make less money than the first. Empire made less money than Star Wars (ANH). TFA was also tbf first SW movie in ten years and the first with OT cast members since 1983 - the hype was off the charts.

Seriously, though, The Last Jedi made the most dough, after TFA. I doubt they'll cancel it so early.

Honestly speaking, Rian Jhonson was right to not even try to please the fans, there are so many factions inside the star wars fandom (OT, PT EU, and now ST), that is literally impossible to please all of them, so his mind must have been thinking, although, I do not want to cause separation between the fans, this will going to happen sooner or later, so I will try to make my story, in the way that I want to tell it, i'm not even going to try to bother, since there will be some sector of the fans that are going to be pissed anyway with every thing that i do.

Look, all of these guys are in a difficult, almost no win, situation. If you play to the general audience, you get accused of simply remaking one of the original 3 films. If you try and move away from that formula, you have a solid base of hard core fans who jump all over you and crap on your film.

Having said that, Johnson stuck to his vision and made his film. He is entitled to that and I applaud him for it. If you are going to get criticized anyway, then screw it, do your thing. Disney, it appears, and the folks at LF are all happy with what he created. The idea that they will remove him from an announced trilogy just doesn't wash. Unless he goes down the road of Miller and Lord, in which case they'd have no choice. Of course I can't see that happening. Personally I'd expect he will make a trilogy of films that are set in the deep galactic past, perhaps the format of the Jedi order. That would allow him to continue to play with some of the ideas/toys he played with in VIII, but there won't be the pressure of how to handle Luke, Leia, etc.

The guy has talent and it seems like KK and co. are more than willing to trust his judgement and let him roll.

Just let him do his trilogy, but drop "Star Wars" from the title and have it take place in a galaxy right next to the GFFA. He can stick to his vision without the risk of ruining the franchise further, and Lucasfilm (Kathleen Kennedy) won't have to deal with yet another embarrassing director scandal.

I do not want them to cancel his movies. I look forward to seeing what he can create from scratch. Even though thinking about the new characters he created for TLJ it is a little worrisome. He can do the story but I hope he brings someone else to lend another pair of eyes for the screenplay.

"Brick" and "Looper" had plenty of interesting original characters. The only bad original character from TLJ was Rose, and she was (most likely) added because the studio needed more "representation" for asians and (neither hot nor athletic) women. So there no real reason to worry about RJ creating original characters.
