Hahahaha... I'd completely missed this news, but it's a dash of marketing genius! :D

McLaren have got flip-flop manufacturer Gandys to sponsor their halo device...

...and Gandys in return put McLaren branded (and coloured) flip-flops into production on Tuesday
    [IMG]

I'm a sucker for orange products, to I'm definitely getting a pair in anticipation of at least 3-days of summer this year!!

ok, so free practice 1 scared the living **** out of me... the gaps between the top three, the midfield and the backmarkers (sorry sauber) looked scarily similar to fp1 in Melbourne last year.

free practice 2 made me a bit happier.. the Red Bull looks very decent. the "midfield" seem to be a little closer to that top 3. the Mclarens look good too.. top 10 comfortably based on the two practice sessions.

rain is forecast for qualifying and potentially for the race on sunday. if that's not a sign Fernando.. i don't know what is :D

Well this is damned annoying... and unless there's some kind of divine intervention, cripples DR's chance of a home win!

it's a practice session, it wasn't a crash or an incident that meant that anyone was in danger on the circuit.. he slowed down dramatically and only missed the guide time by a smidge.

stewards need to grow a bit of common sense. grid penalty for that is f'd up to say the least. the 2 penalty points on his license were adequate at the very most.

Vettel received 3 penalty points and a stop-go for ramming into the side of Hamilton in Baku last year on purpose.
he received no punishment for hitting stroll in malaysia on the slow down lap.
he received no punishment for the verbal bashing of Whiting on the radio the year before.
(apologies.. sounds like Vettel hate, but they were the cases of ridiculous steward decisions that sprang to mind lol)

3 grid penalty for the home town favorite... for that? wow. plain wrong.

I can understand having sever punishments for ignoring a red flag in a race or qualifying conditions but that seams very harsh given the reason for this red flag. I'm with @Maximus the penalty point are more then fair given the circumstances of the Red Flag conditions.

So as the dust settles on the opening race of the 2018 season what does everyone think.
Well that's would say it didn't go as well as planned for Mercedes & the lack of overtaking among the top 3 teams is a bit discouraging though hopefully that is more down to the track then there ability or lack thereof to get close to each other due to aero issues. The midfield looks super competitive & what order they finish the season in is probably going to come down to there reliably more then there outright power (Though the ability to actually put the wheels on the car probably I would be helpful Yes I'm looking at you HASS).

Hoping for a decent race in the desert. It's been a bit of a Ferrari stronghold in recent times (which I am all good with being a Prancing Horse fan), but I'm fairly sure that Lewis has been strolling around the paddock listening to LL Cool J's 'Mama Said Knock You Out' on loop to get himself psyched up... "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years. I'm rocking my peers, puttin' suckers in fear..."

In vaguely related motor sport news - did you see this beast get unveiled yesterday ahead of the start of the WEC season? The lead car has Neal Jani alongside former F1 drivers Andre Lotterer* and Bruno Senna. I really hope that with the reduced competition in the LMP1 class this year that Rebellion can pull some solid results with this thing...

(*ok, so Lotterer is a bit of a stretch as he was Jaguar test driver for 2002 and only completed a single racing lap for Caterham in 2014 before mechanical failure took him out... but he has taken 5 podiums - 3 wins, a 2nd and a 3rd - from nine starts at Le Mans)

I think the First Order would approve of the colour scheme of the livery too

long straights, high heat, sand (we all hate sand right?)

we will learn so much more this weekend than we did 2 weeks ago.

i'm sneakily listening to Free Practice 1 right now at work... i'm so naughty :D

Now that is a mean machine. It will be fascinating to see what the F1pole time is this year if it’s dry as the F1 cars are faster this year & if some one does a Hamilton style Aus quail lap then I can see that time being beaten.

Also McLaren have restructured there management team after a disappointing start to the season.

What great race especially those last 20odd laps.. This season is going to be close 3 races in & the top 5 are only separated by 25 points.
With the 3 difrent teams involved each with their own strategies & also all 3 seeem to treat there tyres very differently I can see this one going all the way till the last race of the season in both Drivers & Construction Championship.

So bring on Baku because if last year is any indication it could be a very open race & that safety car sure is making the season more interesting.

It's not easy for me to not mention the facts that
    1) Ferrari and Mercedes still have the strongest cars
    but
    2) highly sympathetic Daniel Ricciardo, with a limited but VERY COOL RED BULL Renault PASSED VETTEL ( Oops :D ) and made it in first :)
..ok I really feel better now :D

I'm hoping we're in for a closer season and some real racing after several years of dominance from Merc and Red Bull. I'm an undisguised Ferrari fan (always have been) and would love to see them get back to a constructors title... the difficulty is that is only seemingly likely to be allowed to happen for Vettel (who annoys me). All that said, I think Ferrari's two wins this year have been more about Mercedes losing than them winning, if that makes sense?

Totally chuffed for Ricciardo for the win in China though - he (and RBR) thoroughly deserved it after their masterful tactics when Gasly's incident turned it all upside down.
