It doesn't and I apologize if that was confusing. The post I was replying to had two parts to it A. BB8 being on the poster is concerning and B. The politics stuff. I was responding to both but not trying to say the two are connected.

They already announced a live action show, it will be on Disney's planned streaming service and Jon Favreau will produce and write it.

IMO there's no way this show will provide any significant backstory to the FO and Snoke. I bet it'll feel subordinate and separated from the big stuff in the main storyline. Not saying that's bad (could turn out to be a reason it's good, we'll see), but their hands are tied until this trilogy is wrapped.

The premise makes me think it's going to be about a "freelance" character who's on a mission for the Resistance (well, that's pretty much explicitly stated). By doing it this way, the Resistance can have some kind of role in it, but probably won't be the centre of the story (which I guess will be mostly new characters, locations etc.). Similarly to Rebels not being about the Rebel Alliance. I think we're going to see a good deal of what the New Republic was like, though.

If they choose the direct way of a space western adventure in style of Cowboy Bebop I'm fine with that. The poster was the first hint.

Bwahahaha you guys will literally like anything they put out. Seems like a lot of you have already decided to like it.

This show sounds more pointless than rebels- and that’s saying something.

To be clear, I have no issue with the politics- I’m not one of those clowns.

Disney putting forward female heroes and heroes of different ethnicities is a very good thing.

That said, who gives a damn about the early years of the Resistance?? They literally just told the story of the rebellions early days. Resistance is just rebellion 2.0.

Of all the stories they could tell- Post ROTJ Luke, early Ben solo days, post TLJ, a series on lando post ROTJ, something entirely different....

Hell a series that covers the final days of the empire though the eyes of “world war 2 pilots”...that could have cameos of all our favorite characters.

They just put forward a way to sell more BB8 toys and phasma figurines.

Not sure how you guys have convinced yourself that this stuff is interesting- it isn’t.

Am I supposed to honestly get excited to see phasma?

Poe? I can barely stomach Poe in the films.

Also, are you guys prepared for how Filoni crams in 5-bladed light sabers and wolves and stuff in a show that shouldn’t have Jedi?

It’s ok to say ‘this doesn’t sound good’ and/or understand Disney at wants to sell you BB8 toys.

    It’s ok.

Because I liked Dave's past animation work? It's simple as that. Now I'm that thrilled that its anime, but still.

I was thinking earlier that they may take inspiration from Astro Boy, but I like your idea much better! Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic! Cautious because as much as I liked Rebels, I'd like something a little closer to TCW in tone; optimistic because of the anime inspiration and Filoni is behind it.

Congratulations, you're the first person I've ever given a "disagree" rank to. And I'll tell you why:

It's easy to think that your post is a troll one, and it might be, but I choose to take your criticism seriously. And I disagree with it.
There's a difference between liking something and absorbing (ie. reading, watching, playing) something. Ideally, you're right, they should be the same. But they're not. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean I sometimes won't absorb it. I don't care for Forces of Destiny, but I still sometimes watch it because it has value to the characters. I didn't care for Battlefront II as a game, but I still watched the cutscenes because they had value to the overarching story.

Star Wars fans absorb these smaller stories and things because they have value beyond themselves. Do we love them all? Not in the least! I think a majority of us would like to strike Heir to the Jedi and Chewbacca's solo run from the Canon. But we still try to read them to get a sense of how they fit into the big picture.

Who cares about the early Resistance? You've almost got a point there. I didn't really care. But at the same time, I can see all the hidden gems there. A Cold War-esque thriller between the Resistance and the First Order; the politics of trying to get support; dogfights out of sight. It's very possible to do this well. Besides, some of the best stories are the ones we didn't know we wanted.

And while I do want to see Post-ROTJ Luke, I think waiting until they've finished Ep IX is done is the smart choice. Let the film-makers tell their story and then fill in the gaps.

And speak for yourself about Poe! I loved him!

And Wolves! They're my favorite animal!

A little disappointed that it’s going to be anime style but I’ll cry my little fan tears and get over it. I’ll be on board by first episode because of Filoni.

I mean, as fans of Star Wars, it makes more sense to me to anticipate liking it than to anticipate not liking it, but maybe that's just me. I mean, why does it apparently make more sense to have already decided to dislike it?

That being said, I'm not crazy about the art style, just because I would've probably preferred the Filoni-verse to have a more consistent feel. But I do like ATLA, so we'll see, I might end up really enjoying this choice.

Regardless, I'm most excited about the fact that this seems to have allowed for some very much needed fleshing out and context of the Sequel trilogy era. We know so little about this era, I don't see how this series couldn't cover some really interesting stuff.

But much like with TLJ, I guess it's easier to complain that your fan theory was wrong rather than to embrace what we're getting- even when you don't really know much about what we're getting yet, anyway. ;)

    +1. Its really disappointing.

So a disappointing tv series (and yes its already disappointing to me that they chose to do another series about rebels and just giving it a different name) and a solo movie (without Harrison and possibly a trilogy) is what they have to offer in the near future. Why dont they just announce the freaking remakes of the franchise movies while they are at it. If they do spinoff movies about rebels i'm off.

Think is that the ST will be wrapped half way through the 2nd season of this series. Sure before EP9 comes out not much will come out that could give away things in EP9, but January 2020 and beyond no problem.

I have to disgree with a key point you made. The Resistance didnt hide from the First Order. The First Order hid from the New Republic and the Resistance. Members of the New Republic openly funded the Resistance. Not nearly the same thing. At the end of Bloodline (~6 years before TFA) the First Order is just starting to be discovered and Leia for the Resistance, because the New Republic is choosing to demilitarize. It isnt small groups hiding across the galaxy and slowly growing.

This is very exciting to me! I can learn to accept the anime influence. Would love to see some Akira-esque animation, that would be incredible. Something very much in this vein:

It has that old school anime style that I personally think fits well within SW.

I hope that's the case with this series as well, but I have to admit my first reaction to this series is meh. We don't know much about the series so far or anything about these characters, but if this is a "how the Resistance was born" shows right after "how the Rebellions was born" it would be kind of lame.

I also wonder if Lucasfilm has blocked off areas for films. Lucasfilm probably wants to hold onto a "Luke" film set after Return of the Jedi. They know that's a winner if they make it. Plus, the less they discuss what Luke was doing the easier it is to create a story. With so many stories in production Lucasfilm would be wise to keep Luke in their back pocket in case there's any duds released. The same with Han Solo/Lando. In 10 years they could make another Han Solo film set after Return of the Jedi with Lando and Han assuming the Solo film works.

Yes, this is the main problem with the one canon "everything is connected" situation. The movies will always be the main focus, so the tv-shows, books, comics, games etc will never break new ground or new era's open because than they could get in the way of potential future films. So will we get an "old Republic" show, after we had a movie about that era. The same goes for the era after the ST and so on. This has been a discussion in the books/comics forum but now you see this problem crossover to the televisionshows.

They apparenyly have an rebels/resistance fetish at Lucasfilm..
I'm not to thrilled about it either. Of all the possibilities Lucasfilm has and this is what they come up with ..

I wouldn't consider this a problem. It's simply the economic reality. Movies cost a lot of money to produce so it's not wise to limit future storytellers. So far Lucasfilm has done a much better job than Marvel in this era. I remember when ABC launched Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as this big crossover event. Marvel Studios basically just ignored the TV shows to the point of contempt. Same thing with the NetFlix shows.
