I think we can all pretty much agree that those two games are the best RPGs with the Star Wars name on it.

But there is still an ongoing debate about which one was actually the better of the two.
The critics prefered Kotor1 over Kotor2, for Kotor 2s defence the game was rushed out the door by Lucasarts.
So that means that Kotor 1 was better isnt it ?
Not really especially in the last couple of years I hear people often talk about how much Kotor 2 is superior to Kotor 1, especially after the restored content mod came out that brought back a lot of things obsidian originally wanted to include.

Most people talk about the much more mature/darker story, better characters and just overall darker tone that make Kotor 2 the better Game.

Kotor 1 is often referred to as the standard Hero's Journey with a great story with one of the best twists of all time (at least in video games), great planets and likeable characters.

So the question is which one do you prefer ?

I personally like both games, but I completed Kotor 1 probably 8 or even 9 times and Kotor 2 only 2 times (I am currently on my 3rd playthrough tho with the RCM for the first time)

KOTOR 1 is the more typically "Star Wars-y" of the two, repeating themes, tone, and locations that we see in the films. It's easy to digest, and fun to play.

KOTOR 2 is a darker, different story. It's not as fun and lighthearted as the first, instead opting to be more pensive and philosophical.

I guess 1 is like a classic pepperoni pizza, while 2 is more like a dish of Shrimp Paella. They're both fantastic in their own way, but one is obviously geared to be more of a crowd-pleaser.

I have to go with the original, there were definitely a lot of great things about the second but the first was just so great. It was Star Wars-y as you said, the ending was just really great and I remember first beating it all those years ago and I was so jazzed. Where the second one had a kind of weak/unfinished ending. And I think the first has such a great story, Revan is a great character and that was a great twist. Best Star Wars twist since Vader turned out to be Luke's father. The second game was probably more fun from a pure gaming standpoint but I think the first had better characters and a more satisfying story/ending, which are very important in an RPG.

I have to go with the original 'Knights of the Old Republic' as well. The ending is great no matter which route you choose as the player, but I have heard the second game is indeed darker. As someone who does not have the means of the playing the 'Sith Lords,' the walk through videos show it does have a great story line. Like Nunbnuts said, Revan is a great character but there is a part of me that still questions the Council's motives to deliberately lie about what they did to you as a character despite the light side ending.

It's hard for me to choose... they are both very different games. With KOTOR I we get more a traditional Star Wars tale. While you're able to make "neutral" choices there is a clear distinction between light and dark. The choices you make don't require a crap-ton of thought. The story is easy follow, though not necessarily predictable. This game is a lot like the main Saga films.

With KOTOR II it's different. It isn't all black and white. There's a ton more gray. It's often hard to tell what's right and wrong/what's light and dark. It is most definitely more of a philosophical game as @cawatrooper stated. You're asked a lot of deep questions that really require you to think. I'd say you could compare this to the anthology films, but we've only had one so it's too early to say.

I guess if I had to choose... I'd go with KOTOR I. The story screams classic Star Wars, the characters, I feel, are a lot more likeable and you're able to connect with them better. The score is really great and has more emotion (KOTOR II does have a few good pieces though). The deep, philosophical-ness of KOTOR II, while when I first played didn't bother, might actually trigger some of my anxiety now anyway.

So, yeah... I guess KOTOR I wins by only a slight margin. :)

The story and themes of KOTOR 2 are much more attractive for me.

Hard to say, but if we can finally get that Genoharadan mod for KOTOR 2, I would possibly go with KOTOR 2.

KOTOR is incredible... KOTOR 2 would be even better if the ending was not rushed and Kreya was not the incarnation of sandpaper.

The concept of Kreya as a character is great, but the execution sucked in my opinion.

I love KOTOR hands down more that KOTOR II. Also my game of KOTORII glitched and it ended with the Ebon Hawk crashes into a cliff and then i was never able to go any further :-(

I actually can now play it on my ipad, and it blows my mind when about 10 years prior i had to install 3-4 disks

I honestly think that if Obsidian had the chance to finish the game before the release, it would be on par with Kotor 1 or even better.

So sad that lucasarts rushed it out the door. :(

The original is better Star Wars and stronger story wise and II has better gameplay and character interactions.

I'd say that it depends on your preference of villain, above anything else. If you wanted a revenge story thats brilliantly crafted, with depth but no real mystery, then KOTOR 1 is the way to go. However if you prefer a complicated relationship with the villains, e.g. Sions wierd love for the exile and Kreia's methods to defeat you, then its KOTOR 2.

Personally, I prefer KOTOR 1 over KOTOR 2, but it was close. I guess the deal breaker was the soundtrack .

You know, these two games are kinda similar to TFA and TLJ now that I think about it.

The first is a relatively derivative entry, but nonetheless still very fun. It's iconically Star Wars to its very core.

The second is a complicated and subversive entry, almost clashing with how familiar the first entry felt. Feelings toward it tend to be mixed, but its fans are positive that the way it subverts expectations and presumptions is ultimately a good thing for the series.

I have only heard good things about these two star wars games. What one do people prefer or is the best to play? This might sound a bit dumb but which one to play first? I'm not exactly sure if the games link together. Do you have to play the first one before the second one or do they not relate at all? If so which one would you recommend to someone that wants to learn more about that time era and play a good game.

I'm not too fussed about graphics as they are reasonably old games now.

My heart will always go with the first one being my favorite, I played that one over and over and didn't get the chance to play the sequel until a few years later.

I didn't think the second one was as good in my opinion, it didn't have the memories for me that the first one did.

Hello all - I've only played KOTOR I and it was on my iphone just a few years ago. I loved it but heard KOTOR II was a bit of a mess. This thread has me wanting to try KOTOR II -- I played the first one on my iphone since I travel a lot for work. Does anyone know if the KOTOR II is on iphone and whether it has the restored content that people seem to think is important?

Hey guys, I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm sorry if I'm being off topic, but I haven't really seen anyone reporting on this. Do you think that these tweets by Chis Avellone (KOTOR 2 Lead Designer/Writer; Star Wars Tales; Clone Wars Adventures) means that he is working on something Star Wars related again?

On topic: As a kid I prefered KOTOR 1 over KOTOR 2, but even then I was more intrigued by KOTOR 2, and as the years passed by I likerd it more and more. For the last 5 years now, I'm on the opinion that it is the most sublimely written piece of creation in Star Wars across all mediums (at least out of those that I've experienced).

I would adjust this comment by saying, that critics always prefered KOTOR 2s story, characters and world, over KOTOR 1s. The only reason KOTOR 1 got higher ratings was that it was a better overall product (more polished with fewer bugs <-Interestingly I've been playing both games since their release, and I never even once encountered a bug in K2, that would cause even just a minor annoyence. I guess I'm just really lucky.).

So for me, it is KOTOR 2, without a doubt! :)

Without mods, KOTOR I. With mods KOTOR II. I loved the plot twist in KOTOR I. It blew my mind.

I did not hear about this. I hope he's working on something...

If you have a computer, you can get it on steam. The big plus is that you can get the mod.
