Think Star Wars needs a small film to set box office expectations?

    I think that LucasFilm really needs to make a small film that wouldnt ever be expected to be a blockbuster to reset expectations. Reason I say this is most want the galaxy to grow larger and have all sorts of genre films. Yet without a deliberate attempt to make something that would clearly be on a smaller scale the expectation is that every film must be a blockbuster. So I think that something that would clearly be a smaller film would be a good choice to make.

    Thoughts? Is my idea coming across correctly?

    Both Rogue One and Solo were movies that were meant to have substantially smaller budgets than they actually did, as a result of troubles with less-experienced directors taking the helm of projects and management needing to overhaul them in post-production.

    So if future Star Wars movies have the kinds of modest budgets that either of those films were intended to have, then yes, I think that having lower-budgeted movies with high returns would look well for Lucasfilm even if not all of them crack $1B.

    I meant smaller more character driven, less action oriented film. Comment may be moot now with how Solo has done.

    Star Wars is not the type of an IP to produce "small" films. Each of the films is considered an event film. The smaller fare is what the tv shows and the upcoming streaming service is for

    Sure... blame the directors.

    The Russo Brothers were television directors when they signed on to make Captain America : Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and now Avengers 3 and 4. They had no film experience, but Feige knows what he's doing and made sure to keep them on track. Edwards and Lord/Miller have all at least made successful films.

    What you describe are issues that fall squarely on the Producer, whose job is to make sure everything gets made smoothly, and delivered on-time and on-budget, and how the big boss is expecting. And if its a problem endemic across multiple moves, which this is, its a systematic issue and on the Studio Boss... Kathleen Kennedy.

    Exactly this. The words small and Star Wars just don't mix on the big screen. The TV shows (TCW and Rebels) had a much larger focus on telling the stories of characters and how they factor into the bigger picture so I imagine we will continue to see that with the new TV shows that are slated allowing the movies to continue to be the big events that they are typically known as.

    Heard the news on them 'cancelling' the stand alone films, 'because of Solo'. I don't know how much of that I can believe, or if it's just marketing hype. Disney currently still has 2 standalone films lined up and are not cancelling those. Maybe they'll gauge how those to before taking the final decision?
