People that like Star Wars? Surley. I'm just not so sure the problem is really with people that like Star Wars.

With your suggestion there, again the problem is that, you don't know that is going to alleviate anything, it may even exacerbate the negativity. What I mean is, your input may be more fuel for negativity via something like "The new Star Wars is the worst Star Wars ever because it's just fan-service; and now no one can deny it" you see what I mean? What one group of people want is not necessarily what others want.

That's of course predicated on the unstated proposition that the people fueling the negativity, actually want to have fun as a collective. I'm not so sure that's the case. If it isn't, then your suggestion will be seen by the ones fueling the negativity as, a position of weakness to be exploited to cause further harm. It's like, if someone is trying to wound an animal, and the animal shows signs of being hurt, another more vicious attack will be made precisely because of the moment of weakness.

I doubt anyone loves the "enjoy it or get lost" mentality but sometimes it's the only answer for the problem. If a person doesn't like a band's latest album, don't buy it. The band will release another, maybe you'll like it, maybe not. If it comes to the point that a person is saying "I liked the eariler music, but not a fan of the new stuff" then, that's the way it is.

If the "fans" begin protesting the band, and spewing vitriol at them, and trying to sabotage the band's tour and ruin their careers by campaigning against them online? Time for the band to call them out as "fake fans"/"fair weather fans" and tell them to get lost and never come back. Who would possibly want "fans" like that associated with their music, tarnishing the image of the rest of the fans? With fans like that, who needs enemies?

I presume you were around for the prequels? Why would you possibly think it a good idea to "honor George's future vision" with the amount of vitriol spewed at the man and his vision to begin with? Causing him to "divorce" his own story? Do you know how many people I saw online simply delighted by the fact that (in their mind) Disney was severing all ties with Lucas' stories and the prequels? If Disney would've said "We're honoring George's vision for the ST"? You seriously think that wouldn't have caused a huge negative response in these "Star Wars fans"? That would've been all they needed to go into Episode VII saying "Let's tear this garbage apart, look for anything and everything to criticize" you know it as well as I do. The "loyal fan boycotts" would've probably begun prior to Episode VII insteading of waiting until VIII.

I don't know that that is supposed to be saying.

Not saying you can actually bar them, but you can definitely state you don't need or want them anywhere near the fanbase you have.

That's what stuff like the celebration events are for. They already do that. At the heart of your idea, there's the unstated proposition that, the visible negativity is coming from sincere fans of Star Wars. I'm looking at the visible negativity and saying, "I disagree with your unstated propositions". I don't think sincere Star Wars fans are responsible for the visible negativity.

I don't know what you mean by that.

They have made statements calling for positivity. As for "by the way here is some 'good news' in the world of Star Wars" this is an example of what I consider the problem with your idea. You are suggesting there is some kind of "good news" that will be regarded as such by every voice across the board. In fact, your "good news" may further exacerbate the problem as it is seized upon by "loyal fans" and called "the worst news ever, further proof Disney is giving us the middle finger"

What I mean by that is to not have Rian, Pablo, SW news outlets, etc. engage on Twitter. It is not helping and I don't agree with this approach. They are just creating this perceived feeling toward the fans. Things get lost in translation....badly and it spreads.

I have to ask - where and when did Lucasfilm release a formal statement about the fandom calling for anything positive - in fact I haven't seen it from anyone yet? I am talking about bringing people together not continuing the divide which is the whack a mole game.

This back and forth serves as a visible reminder of where we stand as a fandom. Completely different pages, expectations and approaches.

I appreciate you deconstructing everything I said, but we've derailed the thread when I simply wanted to talk about Kenobi and posed a simple question - so I will cease and desist now.

That's a tricky word in this situation.

I'm not sure what a "formal statement" is meaning in this context.

Again, tricky word. Maybe it should be explored in a thread of its own.

    Agreed and likewise.

Obi-Wan doesn't have to leave Tatooine if some really creative scriptwriter puts his mind into it. Like, for example, some evil dark-side cult from previously unseen part of the planet shows up in the area and Obi-Wan would be forced to go to their far-off lair and deal with them before Luke is discovered. A Mad-Max type of thing with rundown desert towns, mad cultists on bikes, armed with pieces of scrap, evil hideout in a huge cave - you know, all the fun stuff we love.

I don't think it matters because I don't think many actually want a Kenobi movie, they want a Ewan McGregor flick that he reprises Obi-Wan Kenobi in and that is all they want and if it isn't whatever they have built up around that notion then there will be blowback and anger at a "missed opportunity" and any and every possible complaint will then be flung at the wall whether it be "he had one mission and he abandoned it, #notmyObi-Wan" or be it he hung around on Tattoine and "they didn't have a story and this just a fan servicing ca$h grab, #notmyStarWars".

Personally, I see no point if he doesn't leave because whatever it is is otherwise is likely to be fairly mundane and potentially quite dull.

It mainly depends on the story and when it is set. If it's set near ANH, then he shouldn't leave Tatooine. On the other hand if it's set shortly after ROTS, then he shouldn't leave Tatooine too, because Luke is still a baby.

The Kenobi movie will probably be told over a period of years. So, I can see that he will leave Tatooine more often in the first half of the movie, then it will slowly go down. The second half or maybe the final third will only be Tatooine. => A montage of him getting older.

for me personally, it works either way.. whether he goes off planet or not.
it could be dull, but it could also be like the first section of TFA where we saw Rey eeking out an existance on Jakku - which i found to be so watchable and could have happily watched her scavenge around for 3 hours.
clearly things need to happen.. he's there watching over Luke for a reason, and assuming you have seen Rebels.. for good reason.
i'd love to see a montage of Ben checking on Luke over a long period of time - and us seeing Luke and the Lars from a distance.. seeing little Luke getting up to mischief.

with some clever use of old footage and new tech.. oh boy could we see something awesome!

I’ve always thought that Ob1 was like a warrior priest or better yet warrior monk who stayed on Tatooine and fought away the Tuskin Raiders & Krayt dragons, while happily watching over Luke. Lived a lifestyle similar to that of Rey on Jakku as @Maximus had mentioned. But yeah, I think Ob1 could have departed and returned from a mission to make an OB1 film more interesting, for me, OB1 watching over Luke was his final mission, and I have no problem with that.

For me personally it doesn't work if he leaves Tatooine. I feel like the implication he stayed there is pretty strong. Of course, technically they can make him go somewhere, but that's a stretch IMO. Him facing Vader would be even more of a retcon and I know some people would like to see it. I definitely don't, that's too much.

No, it wouldn't be a problem for me. I've written three AU stories set between the OT and the PT. And in the third story, I had Obi-Wan leaving Tattoine for a brief period. So, no. I don't see Obi-Wan leaving the planet for a period of time as a problem. Why limit one's thinking into believing that Obi-Wan has to stay on Tattoine 24/7 during those nineteen years in exile? That's ridiculous to me.

Yeah, I don't think that could happen without feeling like excess fan service, although just thinking of Legends, he is actively seeking Obi-Wan out...which could lead to the Conclave on Kessel. If that story was tied to Obi-Wan historically helping ferry Jedi to safety, it could be interesting side point, but it will feel like Rogue One again - depressing and disconnected. I think Vader, and the Jedi escaping the purge seen through the eyes of another new non-Jedi character would need to be a separate movie. I would rather one last mission off world to retrieve history, then focus on the Lars/Luke.

The more I hear about it, the more it seems this movie will be a smaller budget on the streaming service, so likely Tatooine only.

A planet is a big place, and even desert has different landscapes, I'd figure even more so on an alien planet such as Tatooine where we have a Sarlacc pit.

I do think Luke has met Obi-Wan by ANH "Maybe she means old Ben?" seems to me that they probably met or at least knows him by reputation.

My idea to add space in there is maybe have a Jedi padawan come to Tatooine trying to evade bounty hunters. He gets too close to Luke and Obi-Wan has to act, but he's torn between protecting Luke, this other young kid and protecting his identity. So a space battle to start, maybe one to end as the Padawan actually escapes.

If the actor of the padawan does a good enough job, having his story told helping Obi-Wan lead the Empire and bounty hunters away from Tattoine could be a compelling pseudo-sequel. Certainly a force sensitive padawan, on the run, in hiding and with a mission could be a pretty cool concept to take fans to new worlds, the under belly of the galaxy, while exploring the time line between III and IV.

I'd have no problem if he left the planet, but I want a good reason for it. Not some paper thin excuse that doesn't truly explain why he left.

I think you are just trolling people dude. I don't like TLJ and it isn't because it failed to live up to what I thought it should do. This isn't the place for it, but I found the characters (Rey, Rose, Holdo) to be paper thin. I found the excuse for why Luke was on the Island to be bogus and out of character. For me it wasn't that RJ disrespected me. It's that I felt he was cavalier with the material and showed little reverence for the IP, something KK said they would be sure to do back in 2012 when she took over for George.

Anyway, I really hope they do make this film. Personally I'd have Dave Filoni write it, or at least have him as part of the writing team.

Would it be a problem if he left Tatooine for no reason at all? Yes.

Would it be a problem if the left Tatooine for a good reason? No.

There, I solved it for you. If you can make it work story-wise, it won't be a problem.

It’s a big galaxy, so I think he should be able to leave tatooine. Unfortunately due to yoda and ob1 going into exile, it won’t be easy for him to go on a mission that could get the attention of Vader or palpatine.

Well, he went into hiding on Vader's homeworld, wearing official Jedi robes* as his "low-key disguise", and lived under a slight abriviation of his own name... I assume the Empire is pretty crap at finding people they're interested in ;)

*The decision to make Obi-Wan's hermit robes from the OT be the official Jedi uniform in the PT is one of the small things that annoys me something fierce, heh heh.

Of course Obi-Wan can go off-world if he has cause to do so! :D

Yeah. He hid on a planet in the outer rim controlled by the hutts, that was almost the farthest from the center of the galaxy. Seems like a perfect place to hide in plain site..lol

Of course it wouldn't be a problem. There is nothing wrong with Obi-Wan having an adventure somewhere other than on Tatoooine, before returning to that planet.
