    *this thread contains Solo spoilers*

over the past while i've had several discussions with friends regarding the new Solo movie (which i liked) and other projects that have been revealed or hinted at (Fett, Obi, Lando, etc.). it is my opinion that Solo, and maybe even R1, are the first steps towards a more connected shared story between the "stand alone" films.

"Star Wars Cinematic Universe" is a bit of a misnomer (Star Wars has always been a cinematic story first and foremost), but with MCU, DCCU, Sony's Spidey-verse, the X-Men CU, it feels like an accurate way to describe what may be coming up for Star Wars.

@DailyPlunge touched on this concept in a thread they posted regarding the upcoming Fett movie. will this film be a stand alone story, isolated and strictly about the infamous bounty hunter, or will it be more of a sequel to the Solo movie and pick up where that story left off? i believe that the latter is more likely, especially given the set up for sequels in Solo.

the reintroduction of Maul caught me completely off guard. i mean, that was way out of left field. however, this sets up a capable, powerful villain for our protagonists to test themselves against without upsetting the foundation of the Empire vs Rebels as seen in the OT.

what do you think? will the Star Wars stand alone/prequel films be connected? is it a good idea to move in this direction?

I really love this idea. I didn't expect to say that before Solo came out, but it's really the best way of using these characters going forward. The real question is will there be a market for this kind of story? People will have to come out and support the Solo film for Disney to invest more money in telling stories about Solo/Lando/Fett/Maul/Qi'ra/Hutt.

i totally agree. i think it was intentional to have characters like Becket, L3, and Vos bite the dust as it allows Han, Lando, and Qi'ra the opportunity to grow into their roles. subsequent films already have an ensemble cast ready to go.

i also like how the Empire takes a back seat in Solo, acting more like corrupt cops than ultimate bad guys; it lets the underworld criminal characters really shine.

If it's canon, they are already connected. I was thinking something along this lines too, if say, they have a Boba Fett movie, they have Maul/Dathomir or whatever involved as well. With Star Wars in general though, it's canon, though sometimes it's a little wishy washy on that. There's a kids book (elementary level) with Chewie interacting with K2-SO and Cassian is mentioned.
That was cool. It was there, but it wasn't the important threat and in the background for much of the film.

I dunno Star Wars already sorta is MCU light (Han's dice for example). MCU works, because its character driven and there characters exist in a "present day" context. Star Wars is built upon its world first and the characters come second. They only have so much wiggle room if they plan on doing a Solo sequel. Remember: Han cannot interact with the Force (being Maul) at all.

i think that's what they're going for now, more character driven material. we are all familiar with the Star Wars back drop at this point, now they'll start honing in on these characters to really flesh them out over several movies.

you're absolutely right about Han and Maul; that's something i walked away from Solo thinking to myself. hopefully they don't retcon the whole thing as that would be a real blemish on Star Wars. even if Solo and the Fett movie are connected, that doesn't mean that Han will ever meet Maul. we could actually get a cool fight scene with Boba vs Maul, kinda like Jango vs Obi. just because Han and Boba are in the same film/on the same crew doesn't mean they're in the same place at the same time.

Ugh yes. The dice thing really left a sour taste in my mouth. It seemed weird to me in TLJ because we'd never really interacted with them before; even as a pretty hardcore fan I had to do a double take. But I thought, "I bet those will play a big role in Solo." And they did. It really took me out of the movie. It was so obviously a marketing-based storytelling decision.

I like the idea that these movies can exist in the same "cinematic universe" without all tying in like Marvel films. That stuff works for Marvel, in my opinion, because 1) they're not building off of a legacy where this was not the case, as is Star Wars, and 2) this crossover based storytelling is inherent to comics.

It could definitely work, but they need to have a plan, something which it is quite obvious they don't have. Heck, you could argue they don't even have a plan for the Saga films, based on what Rian Johnson has said about writing VIII.

Personally, and this is just me, if I were doing this I would have done a film BEFORE doing VII. Perhaps a Luke Skywalker film which covers the time period prior to VII, especially if they were planning on going down the route they went down, killing off Han and then Luke. Then I would do VII, and then I would do a stand alone film which fleshes out Rey and her path to becoming a Jedi.

So my release schedule would look something like this:
15: Luke Skywalker a Star Wars Story
16: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
17: Rey: A Star Wars Story
    18: Rogue One
19: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (set forward in time a bit)
20: The Guardians of the Whills: A Star Wars Story
21: Snoke: A Star Wars Story detailing Snoke and the rise of the First Order
    22: Star Wars: IX

I'm not saying this is perfect, but at least the films would somewhat flow into each other, with the exceptions being Rogue One and Guardians of the Whills.

If anything, I'm disappointed with the fact that for all their talk of protecting the brand and respecting the characters, LFL is really just flying by the seat of their pants. There was no need for Solo, except to get Kasdan on board. That problem is solved by moving VII back a year and allowing JJ to work with the original writer to get a solid script. By doing a film about Luke first, one that sets up his disappearance, you get to explain how he got to where he is, and that would satisfy the large section of the fan base upset by grumpy Luke. Also, by doing a Rey film, you hopefully flesh her out and make her less of a Mary Sue, or at the very least (for those who argue she isn't a Mary Sue) you do enough to make her appear less so.

Just my opinion. I do hope LFL and KK learn their lesson. Start planning this stuff out. Stop flying by the seat of your pants and start taking criticism on board, rather than simply dismissing your critics as idiots and "man babies." Taking a play out of the Chuck Wendig book of dealing with criticism is not the way to go.

I think it's a cool idea going forward! I think i'd also like the idea of a kind-of...not a shared narrative, but a narrative connection, you know?

Like, have the Crimson Dawn be an ongoing presence within this sort of thing? Like, we have them in Solo, setting up Qi'Ra. Next, we can have her hiring Boba Fett for something, who in-turn has to instead go against Cad Bane or someone, who's hired by the Fetts to collect the same thing. The plan goes south, but this puts Boba on the Empire's map for later missions.

Or instead the plan goes wonderfully, but Boba is still on the Empire's map.

The next movie could then be a heist movie with Han, Lando, and Sana. They steal back the item from Crimson Dawn, which puts Qi'Ra at odds with Maul.

Finally, a movie about Qi'Ra trying to unseat Maul with the help of the Empire (read Darth Vader).

Just quick scrambles, but ideas like that, where there's a thread, would be nice.

All of the SW films are already connected. All of them. Even the stand alone flims. "Rogue One" is obviously a sequel to "A New Hope". And it also featured Mustafar from "Revenge of the Sith". "Solo" is merely the story about Han Solo's origins. The planet Scarif (from "Rogue One") was even mentioned in the film.

All of the films make up a shared universe. I'm surprised that no one has noticed. It has been a "shared universe" since the release of "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980. Even the Christmas special about the Endors is part of the universe.
