It has been confirmed that they waited until fairly late in the process to decide who would be the boss of Crimson Dawn at the end of Solo. So who do you think could be some other possibilities, and how would the audience have reacted?

    • I'm ruling out Jabba the Hutt because he is referenced elsewhere in the story. The filmmakers said they didn't want to go with the obvious answer.
    • I'm ruling out Lando and other good guys, because in my opinion that wouldn't make any sense.
    • Qi'ra is out because we already know she rose in the ranks in Crimson Dawn, ultimately to become second in command - so she obviously can't also be the boss.
    • Also ruling out Boba Fett. It doesn't make sense that he would be the boss of a crime syndicate but also doing bounty hunter work, including work for another crime boss. Plus Boba only would've been about 15-ish at the time of Solo.
    • Palpatine could have worked - but there are already so many roads that lead back to Palpatine (he runs the Republic, the Separatists, the Empire, the Senate, the clones, the Droids, the Death Star...) that having Crimson Dawn be YAPP ("Yet Another Palpatine Plan") would feel kind of unoriginal to me.
    • A new character wouldn't work. Solo already feels too much like a Part 1 that is in danger of never getting a Part 2. A new character would make this much worse.
    • Tarkin is a popular villain, but he is a bureaucrat who is loyal to the Empire. I just don't see him as the boss of a crime syndicate.
    • Jar-Jar Binks: Yeah, um... no. :)
    • Snoke: A lot of people have been clamoring for a backstory for Snoke, and would like to know what he was doing during the PT and OT. But honestly, I don't think "running Crimson Dawn" would be a satisfactory answer to most people, and this would've been a disappointment.
In short, I can only think of one other character who I think would've made a really strong ending - and that is, of course, Darth Vader. Would you have wanted to see Vader? How do you think people would have reacted? Do you have any other ideas?

Given the known options, it really seems that Maul was the best and only choice. Of course I'm not considering anything from Rebels or TCW or anyone else from the EU, I am not familiar enough with those characters.

I agree that a new character wouldn't work, unless we already knew that there was going to be a Solo Part 2.

I don't think I would have wanted to see Vader. Might have been cool in the moment, but it just seems exhausting to think about after the fact. And I don't want Vader to be the answer to everything.

The only other alternate I can think of right now would have had Dryden Vos as the head of the syndicate, and then after the events in Solo that role would be assumed by Qi'ra. This eliminates the reveal, and also doesn't leave the door as open for a sequel. But the Maul reveal changes everything.

Yeah, right now I don't think there is any other character I'd rather see in that role.

Maul definitely makes the most sense given the backstory from The Clone Wars. It would have been cool if it was one of the Bounty Hunters like Dengar or Bossk, but that wouldn't make much sense given their level of independence in their work. While Jabba doesn't make sense, they could have possibly used another Hutt since it isn't unheard of for them to try to undermine each other (ex: Ziro constantly working against Jabba), but I feel seeing somebody who looks similar to Jabba would have just made the general audience think it was Jabba. Hopefully if we ever do get some type of underworld movie or tv show, we see more crime syndicates with new and unique crime bosses.

Honestly I think it may have original planned been a new character with the intention of having a second film SOLO film which would have bee; this character up against Jabba with Han in the middle but with all the production issues & the likelihood of there being a second film it was then decided to have a known character & then Maul become the logical choice. Though if a second film ever gets made (I’m still hopeful on this even if it’s a direct to streaming one) they can still do the Crime Lords rivalry story.
