I don't feel bad for Rian Johnson. Yeah, there's a toxic group out there, but they get more attention than their size deserves. Meanwhile, Johnson has a new movie project in production that's attracting a fantastic cast, his new music video is amazing, and he's getting to work on a new Star Wars idea. Seems like he's doing pretty well to me.

Beyond EpIX, RJ's trilogy is what I'm looking forward to most. Yep, even more so than The Mandalorian. All his films and TV episodes (even music videos) have been top notch so far and offer something unique and interesting.

Amid the mass of bland blockbuster cinema these days, Rian is a shining light.

    Hear hear!

“Amid the mass of bland blockbuster cinema these days” is spot on regarding the lifeless, none-risk taking and exchangeable movies nowadays being churned out en masse from the big studios.

As Peter Jackson stated recently in an interview:
Hollywood's changed a lot. On the one hand it longs for original material, on the other hand the industry can no longer deal with them. A film like "Mortal Engines" simply doesn't fit into the usual marketing pattern. It has no big stars and is not a sequel or part of a larger franchise series. The whole machinery is no longer tuned to individual or original material. When we were growing up, most of the movies were originals, only a few were series like "James Bond" or "Star Wars". Today it's the other way round.

You don't have to like what Rian is doing, but at least this man takes risks to make compelling stories, kind of a lateral thinker within the Hollywood main stream.

I guess we can all agree on that Hollywood "longs for original material, on the other hand the industry can no longer deal with them", but speaking about "Mortal Engines"... that film is based on a book series - it's pat of a larger franchise series : p and they hired Hugo Weaving - so I don't get the "it has no big stars" part either. Peter Jackson should stop making up excuses, the movie bombed, end of the story.

He will a year from now like the director of The Mummy has recently. He started out saying critics were wrong. Now he admits the movie was a miss.

But Peter directed LOTR and King Kong and The Hobbit...so he knows all about original works....
It's been 23 years since he's directed a feature film that wasn't based on a book or a remake.

Peter, I love you and what you gave us with LOTR and 2/3 of your King Kong movie, but you aren't exactly setting the example you seem to want there to be. You're not the lovable newcomer. You're the leader. Set the tone.

There is a lack of Rian Johnson talk going on through the grapevine. Not only is Disney focused on promoting television, but the name “Rian Johnson” hardly even enters disney-endorsed conversations lately. My fear is that the certain segment of TLJ haters has pushed Disney to scale back on RJ’s trilogy or (even worse) cancel the trilogy in favor of other stuff.

Rian Johnson is actively making another film right now.
There's little to now talk about the Benioff and Weiss stuff. Because they are wrapping GoT still.

Why is there talk about the TV shows? Because Favreau is filming it right now.

I understand everything you mentioned. But it does make me wonder why now they are pushing television into the forefront? Did Solo’s misperformance really scare them that much?
Did the fan reaction to TLJ and Rian Johnson help cause disney to distract a bit “hey, look over there?” With more emphasis on tv? I don’t know the answer to this.

Because Disney+ is a massive move by Disney and they need it to succeed in a big way. It has nothing to do with Solo.
It has nothing to do with "fan" reaction to TLJ.
There's just nothing to report. He's working on another movie.

The new Disney streaming service is suppose to start up this year. The 2 TV shows and TCW are going to be one of the big draws to the streaming service. GOT is starting their promotions for their new season so it make sense for them to mention B & W series during that time. Rian is busy working on Knives Out so there isn't any new information to give (there's not much information about his current project other than it has a stellar cast and it's a noire type of movie). Disney already told us everything that we to know about his trilogy. There isn't anything new info to give unless you want Bob Iger to give out a statement saying "We're happy how well TLJ performed and Rian is still going to work on the new trilogy once he's done with his current project. More details will follow at a later date." I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar once Rian starts promoting his movie, we'll start hearing more info about his SW trilogy.

I guess some people ( I for one ) thought the RJ trilogy would be taking off sooner? Or at least some word by now.

Knives Out just wrapped up production towards the end of December the movie is being released November 27th of this year. His current project is more than likely the reason why he turned down directing Episode 9 before they ask JJ to do it. We're still couple years away from his trilogy being released anyways. Not sure why people are acting like it was coming out in 2020 or something. I doubt he has a script written for it or if he does it's early in first draft with basic ideas at best. Honestly what more information can they realistically give us? The time period? Date of release? We still don't know what B&W movies are going to be about much less knowing it's time frame it's going to take place in, why are we obligated to know more about RJ trilogy over B&W films? Disney/LFM already stated that they are happy about the performance of TLJ, he's a team player and was asked to direct Episode 9 after the firing of Colin. They wouldn't do that if they was going to trash his project, unless Disney is just a cold/heartless organization.

Go look at how much money NetFlix is collecting this year and you'll be begin to understand. Disney's focus on getting Disney+ up and running because the future is TV. They've already dominating the movie business.

As far as Rian Johnson is concerned his project is years away. Disney discussing it wouldn't make sense. RJ confirmed he was working on it a couple of months ago. There's not reason to keep confirming it ever few weeks.

I hadn't really thought that much into it. I'm just going off of hearing a while back that they were developing it and thus we may have had a time frame or something vague along those lines is all.
