So I have been known to bash the old EU from time to time. Mostly based on some books from the late 1990s (I can't even remember which book turned me off to the EU to be honest). Anyway, I decided to start reading the old EU books in order. Dawn of the Jedi was interesting, but Revan... Wow!!!! Like seriously, that is an awesome novel. Wow.

I am starting to reevaluate my stance on the old EU. I can see why Disney would want to create its own stories. Monetarily it makes sense. But perhaps throwing the baby out with the bathwater wasn't the best idea?

It's the reason why I'm not too 'big' on the novel myself. I feel like it cheapened what Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 did with Revan and Surik just to set it up for an equally misguided finish in the MMO game. Drew is a very good writer, though.

I want to see someone else take a stab at how Revan's story should have ended now that the whole thing has been reset.

the exile definitely got the short end of the stick. revan is unnatural unlucky. i agree it does ruin kotor 1 and 2 a lot. the only thing i like about it. is it stays true the curse of the ebon hawk thing. davic kangs planet got blown up . revan was jailed for 300 years.the exile gets stabbed in the chest by a immortal being and is a ghost for 300 years unable to find peace. and everyone who has own the ebon hawk as come to a bad fate just as the rumor in kotor 1 and 2 said it would be. i have a lot more to the theory but i want to make a thread on it

OK I have never read any of these, is Revan part of a larger series of books that I need to read or can I read it on its own?

Revan is neat, but far from Drew Karpyshyn's best EU contribution. THAT would be his Darth Bane Trilogy of novels, which are borderline masterpieces.

As far as the whole EU decanonization thing goes, my main issue with it isn't that it's all been relegated to non-canon. For me, the real issue is that LFL and all of its publishing/media subsidiaries have failed to make their own continuity as interesting and impactful as the old EU, and despite having none of the limitations that the EU had when it started out, they're refusing to cover more eras or host any long-running or consequential story arcs. Instead, they're just pinching out one-shot, inconsequential movie tie-ins that do little to no expanding on the universe or characters, and are easily trumped by the EU's finer offerings in the Bantam era alone.

Moreover, with how tiny, uninspired, and lazily-written most of the new canon is, having the EU isolated in a continuity where none of the new writers can manipulate it is honestly a blessing in disguise.

Revan hurt the mythos of the character and the KOTOR storyline in general. Seemed to undermine a lot of what KOTOR II set up and the brainwashed conquering Revan was a particularly bad choice.

It's amazing... they took the EU and decannonized it, which made me think they had some grand plan they were going to execute. NOPE. Apparently LFL under Disney doesn't believe in plans. They don't have a plan for their films and they don't have any sort of plan for their books. It's a pretty sad state of affairs if you ask me. I often wonder what is the purpose of the story group? Why are they even in existence if they aren't really doing what they should be doing?

The whole "one shot" thing is annoying. I loved the Ashoka Tano book. Why not do more? Nope. Just a one shot. I loved the Rogue one books, Catalyst and the novelization of the film, but they didn't do anything else with them.

I'm quite frustrated with the lack of a plan for both the films and the books. They have really screwed the pooch.

The EU was not the most consistent continuity, but at least they tried to offer something ambitious and on a large-scale. The New Jedi Order series (which I'm currenly reading through, and everyone should as well, as it is fantastic) had literal months of development, round table meetings between authors, and even a series bible to formulate the direction of characters within the story arc.

And there were so many other huge narrative arcs and consequential events within the EU, ones that went on for years and felt impactful. The Tales of the Jedi, the KOTOR comics, the Legacy comics, Dark Empire. Crimson Empire, the Beastrider Wars, the Clone Wars multimedia project...picking up just one of these, you felt like you were reading history in the making, epics on a massive scale that dwarfed the films.

The last time we got something even remotely resembling a trilogy or story arc in the Nu-Canon was the Aftermath Trilogy, and, well....the quality of those books pretty much speak for themselves.

I'd rather not "wibble and wobble" my way back down memory lane of reading those Wattpad fanfictions.

EDIT: And forget about variety of eras covered. If it's not set in the OT era or its clone, the ST era, it doesn't get a novel. You can count the novels that aren't wedged in those two settings on one era on one hand. Prepare to have Rebels and Empire, X-Wings and Tie Fighters until you vomit.

I'm glad I'm not the only one disappointed with the Nu-Cannon. I loved the Asoka Tano book, but why just a one off? I love the first Thrawn novel (I'm listening to the second one on audible now)... And I liked Catalyst and Rogue One, but just as you mention, the lack of trilogies is baffling. And the one we did get... the less said about that the better!

I plan on reading the New Jedi Order over Christmas break. I'll let you know what I think of it when I've read the first book.

The lack of continuous, narrative story arcs or impactful events in the Nu-Canon makes it stale and boring. I will never understand the celebratory praise heaped on the Nu-Canon by its fans---it's like hearing people celebrate White Castle as "cuisine." It's like, are we talking about the same books? Disney/LFL have had their new canon up and runing for almost 5 years now, and nearly all the books and comics have been disposable tie-ins. Most of the good stuff like Ahsoka and Catalyst was from 2-3 years ago.

Now, I haven’t read the new Thrawn novel, but I have read its comic adaptation, and it certainly gets the thumbs up from me, but that and the Vader comics are two good series out of an ocean of mediocre, forgettable comics.

And do tell me your thoughts on New Jedi Order when you get around to it. I’m four books in, and I’m honestly blown away—this is by far the most interesting story involving the OT characters, and in all likelihood the defining moment of greatness within the EU. I have respect and emotional investment in Han, Luke and Leia like I never had as a kid, and am so invested in the conflict they have to face. New Jedi Order really is to the original trilogy what Star Trek: The Next Generation was to the original Trek series; same universe and rules, but wildly creative new story.

LMAO I love White Castle, but yeah, I don't mistake it for Ruth's Cris! There are some good books in the Nu-cannon, but you are definitely right, its been a few years. The Tarkin book I enjoyed, and I loved the new Thrawn one from what, 3 years ago? Catalyst and Rogue One were good... Aftermath, not so much. Some good ideas but the writing was a joke. And why focus on characters I've never met? I didn't give a crap about any of them in that trilogy. I expected it would focus way more on Han, Chewie, Leia and Luke, but no dice. Hell, I was angry as heck they basically removed Luke from everything. Like he was already on the island. What a joke man.

I am wildly excited now about the New Jedi Order. I just ordered the first 3 books yesterday from Amazon. Thankfully grad school is coming to a close for the semester so I can spend time reading fun stuff. I'll definitely post when I get through a couple of them.

Woah, that’s Starkiller level powers!
This is why I prefer KOTOR/Comics canon Revan. I have the novel ans have yet to commence reading it.

I know next to nothing about Revan's story and the Old Republic games, but I read this book and immediately fell in love with his character.

    Bumping up this discussion.

    Here we go,

I started reading Star Wars novels back in December. Revan was the first novel I've ever read 100 percent and I didn't like reading at the time. Let me tell you one heck of a novel! As far as KOTOR, I don't know how it ties into that I've heard it ruins some of the story it set up? Either way for anyone interested in reading I'd start with this book.

I like the Revan book, but just knowing we got that and Swtor instead of Kotor3 makes me sad.

I read the Revan novel twice a couple of years ago along with Annihilation. Bummer that there wasnt a good follow up "sequel" to take place after what happened at the end of the Revan novel.

Good novel to read through. Just wish there could have been another good novel
