This is the number one maddening thing about the Cantina, as it is the only forum I visit now and do all my typing directly into it....

Alas, looks like the backspace key has been a bane for many , for many many years:

This has been a problem since Internet Explorer. It's a very old web browser standard... Firefox and Chrome have this functionality by default as well, and you have to download a special plug-in or extension to disable it. Edge and IE have no option to disable this function, and Microsoft will just shrug and tell you it's an established browser UI standard and that you have to live with it because it's the standard.

Unfortunately, someone, sometime back in the 1990s or 1980s when the Internet was primarily a system for accessing non-interactive hypertext documents, decided that Backspace was a good choice for a standard key to go back to the previous page. "Well, this key has the word Back in the name! Wouldn't it be clever to make it function as a back button? Haw haw, Backspace to go back through cyberspace! Am I a genius or what, huh?!"

Whoever established this ignorant, short-sighted web standard has my undying enmity, and I curse him/her for it. I've been fighting with this for decades now, and gotten used to trying to save longer form entries to Notepad just in case. Sometimes I forget, though, and some forums thankfully have a "Save Post" that saves your drafts as you're typing them... and it has saved my butt several times.

The only suggestion I have that might work is to try and break yourself of the habit of using Backspace to delete text. Instead, train yourself to keep typing after you make mistakes, and then go back through with the cursor and use the Delete key to fix your errors instead. Once you break the habit of using Backspace to delete text, the Backspace key functioning as a Back button won't be nearly as annoying. You might even learn to like it... which is apparently what they expect.

^^ The replies to this forum are hilarious, take a look at them, especially the guy that says whoever built this feature into IE and Edge should have camel fleas attack him, LOL

 

As a follow-on to this, at the end of the microsoft forum above a person states that Google Chrome had disabled this function....so....over to Chrome for me. It is working great!!!

 

Are these type ads going to be the new norm? I can deal with the two on the sides of the page but the bottom banner is going to be an issue as it covers up some of the page. I understand you need ads for revenue but this is going to be pretty annoying to close the bottom box every time you go to a new page. It wasn't like this earlier this morning. This screen shot is from Google Chrome on a Windows PC.

The forum is almost unusable on my iPhone today.
When I’m typing out replies I’m getting thrown to afflow.btadsmedia.com (don’t go go that address) and then all sorts of pages come up. fills your history with hundreds of entries in seconds.. it’s horrid.

I used to throw my phone across the room after losing wagers here, but it became too expensive

 

We briefly updated to WP 5.1... it seems that with the upgrade came some, shall we say, unstable changes... wait, no, they are "undocumented features"... yeah... one of them is a revamp of the editor, and moves to the Guttenburg Editor, which has sucked hind Piffer everywhere I have seen it. We have rolled back to the previous version with the hope that this problem gets resolved soon. Meanwhile, I am going to try to upgrade on the staging server, and see how damaging it is to unroll the editor

Ok, do this for me... you say it is on the phone? Screen shot that, and let me know what phone, operating system, and browser you are using... let's run it to ground

 

iPhone 8 & safari... but I can’t reproduce it tonight. Either you’ve fixed it, or I’m going mad (potentially both)

 

We have been having a number of annoying issues lately where changes posted don't migrate out the way they are supposed to... maddening to be sure... I am trying to track an issue now where I see one thing, and Viral sees something different, and I can't for the life of me understand why, unless some CSS is getting stuck in cache somewhere...

How can I disable receiving emails for every response?
I still want receiving alerts here as always but not in my mail box.

Under ‘preferences’ and ‘options’ there is a tick box to receive emails for post replies. Just untick it & hit save

a couple of members (inc myself) have noticed that the site has been a bit... laggy over the last 24hrs when we log in.

it seems to sort itself out after a few minutes, but it's almost like there's a lot of "stuff" going on in the engine room when we first try and use the site.

not an issue for me personally, as i'm on pretty much all day and i'm a very patient (and handsome) little droid - but a new member visiting the site for the first time might think.... uggggh !
