There is no requirement that they open the kimono. Thus I ask again, what franchise does do this? Marvel doesnt. No one does. Why should LFL with Star Wars?

I didn't say they should. But from what they've done so far it looks NOTHING like the plan Marvel has/had in place. One MCU film leads into another. There is cohesion there. The films fit together if they come (in the time line) one after the other. And they rarely (never until the new Captain Marvel film) jump around in the time line. So far, film wise, we have what 35 ABY, -1 ABY, 35.1 ABY, -10 ABY, and i'm assuming 36 ABY? Kind of all over the place. None of the films have led into the other or helped flesh out the others (by that I'm talking about the "Story" films).

Again, I'm not saying they need to lay their plan out in public. Not at all. But one would think the plan would start to become obvious at this point, especially as they were the ones who essentially said they wanted Star Wars to do what the MCU was doing.

Here's another bit... The next novel by Claudia Grey is on Obi-Wan and Qui Gon, both of whom I love. But my question: Why? Why them and why now? It's spring 2019 and we are heading into IX. Why not have books that flesh out, oh I don't, the Knights of Ren or the Acolytes of the Beyond (assuming they aren't the same thing)... We last heard of the AOTB way back in the aftermath trilogy and that ended in 2016? I'm assuming both of these groups are important, as the latter seemed EXTREMELY important in the Aftermath Trilogy. But we get this tid bit of info and then nothing. Why? Is that a part of plan?

Quite simple really. TLJ took place immediately after TFA so you have the we dont have a time period to explore. Also you dont want to give away the story of EP9 by providing 2 much information between EP8 and EP9, yet they have done some of that with Comics and it appears likely with Resistance Animated show.

Will also add as much as people want to give MCU pat on the back, how many of the MCU films have experiences with the characters where you say. Hmm wouldnt it have been much easier for character X if the other Avengers participated. Why if potentially catastrophic events happening on Earth only did other Avengers come to help?

Honestly this should be taken to the plan thread. My original was about the negative reaction that brainstorming occurred.

And my point is that the negative reaction is to be expected. Without any other information it DOES appear they are just throwing stuff out there hilly nilly. And while I'd expect them TO DO a ton of brainstorming, these topics, taken without further information, does make it appear directionless.

As for the MCU... I like SOME of it, other parts, not so much. But they were the ones who, if memory serves, said they wanted Star Wars to do an MCU where everything ties in and feeds each other. If I'm putting words in their mouths, then I apologize, but that's how I remember it. As I'm not a HUGE Marvel fan, or MCU fan (again, I like it, but I'm not THAT into it) I can't defend their story telling or even begin to suggest why some Avengers are around for some films while others aren't.

Anyway, I think we are just going to go round and round as to me it appears they aren't really sure what to do and you obviously think they have a plan. They bounce around from one time period to another and maybe that IS the plan. So be it. Personally I think that's not the best plan in the world, but heck, it's a plan.

PS I get that they aren't going to give away anything from IX. But certainly they could have started building up the lore around the Knights of Ren/Acolytes of the Beyond (assuming they are one and the same) by now.

Probably LF wants some kind of feedback and they have spit all this rumors to look for the optimal project.
Can be true all this projects over the table. Why not? There are plenty of possibilities in this universe.
Hope they will choose a cool one with great scripts and proper cinematography.

Absolutely. I agree with that too. I wouldn't mind to see multiple shows, as long as they are well done. But I guess lots of SW followers are not that open-minded and have no patience.

The main host of that show, Fernandez (first name Mark... I think?) is a big Disney Star Wars hater, especially TLJ so I don't really take any opinions from him seriously. (Obviously not saying in general that if you hate Disney SW I don't take you seriously.) His criticisms are hardly constructive and trying to correlate these rumors with them having no plan is just... silly.

I feel like the sole purpose of the show is just for him to vent his frustrations with the franchise, no matter how nonsensical they are. When I heard Collider was doing a second Star Wars show I asked myself, "Why?" It didn't make much sense to me, but after watching a couple episodes... I'm almost sure that's why.

It makes sense that Disney would want to populate their streaming service with Star Wars shows that feature actors from the films, just as they appear to be doing with Marvel. It blurs the line between movies and TV, and elevates the status of the shows and in turn the entire streaming service. Viewers will feel like they are getting something a step above Agents of Shield, Daredevil or Jessica Jones. And if they do want Lucasfilm to produce shows featuring the film actors, it makes sense that ideas that might once have been destined to become Star Wars Story movies will become Streaming Service shows instead.

I seriously doubt any of the newly rumored shows (except for Obi-Wan) are anything more than click-bait guesses, but it wouldn't shock me to see one or two of those characters eventually get their own shows.

As much as I enjoyed Rogue One and Solo, I believe making theatrical films that flesh out past events rather than telling all new stories is bad for the franchise, because it makes the movies feel less important - whereas the same stories produced as television programs would be hugely significant. Ewan McGreggor playing Obi-Wan in a 6 episode TV show would be a monumental event, rather than just another one-off Star Wars movie.

Because it's a streaming service, they don't really need an "anthology series" - if they make Star Wars shows that last only a single season (Cassian, Obi-Wan, etc) that's pretty much the same thing.

I don't like it either. Fernandez is not a good podcast host (he's only there because he owns Collider) and Ellis is trying so hard not to talk down to the boss it feels like he's brown-nosing the entire time.

And while I understand that other Star Wars podcasts get attacked for not being critical enough, personally, I listen to Star Wars podcasts because I love Star Wars - I want hosts that share that love, not ones that want crap all over it. This isn't politics. I don't need a diversity of opinions. And I will never understand why anyone would want to spend all that time complaining about something as unimportant as a movie franchise - or worse, listen to other people complain about it show after show.

If Star Wars ever becomes something I no longer enjoy, I'll do the same thing I did with The Walking Dead: stop thinking about it entirely.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks Ken Napzok is the best thing Collider has going for them.

Ken's enthusiasm and clear love (but not possession of) Star Wars is great and is really close to the pinnacle of what fanhood should be

Just a couple of notes here:

-There have been only four new Star Wars, and half of those have been spinoffs. I'm not sure that's a comparable data set yet.

-I'm not sure it's fair to say there's no cohesion. Say what you want about TFA and TLJ, but the movies practically work as a single viewing experience. Even with the standalones, TLJ has some links to Solo that I thought worked pretty well.

    - Marvel has definitely jumped around in the timeline a bit more than that. It's been close, but GOTG 2 happens way before a lot of movies that came before it, Ant Man+Wasp and Infinity War should be switched, and obviously the bulk of Captain America: The First Avenger occurs earlier in Phase One than the other movies.

I do agree, and thought I'd said as much (but maybe not as clear in my writing as in my head) that it's a bit early, as like you said, four films isn't really a ton of data.

I think where you and I (and perhaps other fans and I) would have to agree to disagree, is the idea of cohesion. Personally and I tread lightly here lest this become sidetracked, the Last Jedi and The Force Awakens (and I can only speak for myself) absolutely do NOT work as a single viewing experience. Actually it felt like going from a highway to a dirt road, at least for me. I was often pulled out of the experience with TLJ, things like the humor, flying Leia, etc. Again, I don't want to reopen old wounds or refight old fights. But for me it didn't work, and I'm actually a fan of Rian Johnson. I love Looper and I love his work on Breaking Bad.

As for Marvel, what I'm getting at is that everything, for the most part, leads into the next film. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule (aren't there always), such as Ant Man. But you can watch Ant Man/Wasp and it isn't as if you are lost. I actually don't think the comparison really can be made between Star Wars and the MCU in that (In my mind) the MCU is.... Well, it ain't Star Wars. For me Star Wars is WAY WAY WAY better, more philosophical and deeper than the MCU. What I do like about it is the way the MCU flows (and I'm actually not a fan of say Guardians of the Galaxy just as a side note).

I just think they should use the tools at their disposal to get things lined up and feeding into each other. Just an example: Let's say, for argument sake, Lucas had had these resources available back in the late 1990s. You get Episode I. Then perhaps you get a series about the adventures of Kenobi and Anakin set in-between I and II. Then you get II. After that a live action series maybe about their continuing adventures. Or you get the Clone Wars micro series cartoon, but you get a live series featuring other Jedi. Then episode III. I would like to see them doing something like that. But maybe I'm just being hyper critical. I can say that I REALLY hope we get more on the Acolytes of the Beyond and the Guardians of the Whills at some point. I really like both of them and would love to see more about them and other "force worshippers."

Absolutely. This was my point. But I think the intention is make shows with more than one season.

Actually, I gave up on Disney shows but I don't watch it. I tried resistance, thought it wasn't good, stopped watching it.

I don't undestand people watching a show just to hate it.

BTW, if you just look at how alive is the resistance threads there ( I mean the show ) which has barely 3 pages of posts for one season it just means that people are not watching it and I highly doubt a live TV show about Rose Tico will revive this franchise or make it better.

But since LFL is the only company in the world to directly insult their own customers, it could be a real possibility.

...or the target audience isn't old enough to talk about this on the internet/on hardcore fan platforms yet...?

It'd definitely a rough start but it does improve, I can attest to that. Just out of curiosity, did you watch Rebels?
Also, what if the Rose Tico show is real, and it's GREAT? Will you try it then?

I kinda hope it's because Claudia wanted it and Disney said "go for it." She's been nothing but a boon for the book side of the story so far, so giving her the opportunity to tell the story she wants might be a part of that deal. As for KoR or AotB groups, I assume because they want to wait until JJ finishes the story he wants to tell and then they'll let the authors fill in the gap however they want. AotB I'm more cynical about, given how much of the early New EU mysteries were really just red herrings.

I HEARD THERE WERE SUPERHERO QUESTIONS! FEAR NOT, FOR I AM HERE!
...anyways, the only time that this question really comes into play is for Thor: The Dark World. In Iron Man 3, Tony's being targeted by terrorists and most likely doesn't know how to reach anyone. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Tony's officially a civilian and has no suits to boot, Hawkeye's MIA (either off on his farm, which Wanda's not gonna risk without his permission or on a mission), Thor's off doing Thor things, and the Hulk is the nuclear option - NO ONE wants to use him. Also, they're being chased so reaching out is not a good choice. Also Also, most of these movies happen within a 2-3 day time-span.

After that, they're all teaming up in Age of Ultron until Captain America: Civil War. Ant-Man explicitly doesn't want the Avengers to know about his tech, so that's why there.

...yeah, I just really like superheroes and wanted to step in...

upon rewatching TFA and TLJ mostly back-to-back, I found that they do connect, but not in the way I really like. Maybe it's due to the pacing or just the lack of timeskip, but TLJ to me feels a lot like Star Wars Episode VII Part 2 if that make sense. Like together TFA and TLJ make up one story, but it makes me feel like we need a whole extra movie to really complete the trilogy. Either way, that's neither here nor there.
The connections to Solo are really fun though.

A lot of interesting stuff here. Obviously not all of it was directed at me, but what the hell, imma answer it anyway. ;)

    1. I liked Rebels from the start, strangely enough. I realized it was "for kids" but I just liked the characters. I can't say the same for Resistance. I have to say I was actually interested in that show, but after I don't know, 3-4 episodes I could not watch it anymore. I might try and pick it up again in the summer, but as of now, it just doesn't do it for me. And that is okay. I'm not going to like every thing with the Star Wars label on it.
    2. I like Claudia Grey, at least what I've read (only read Bloodlines). And I'm actually quite excited by the idea of a book about Obi-Wan and Qui Gon Jinn. But again the bouncing around I think releasing "on off" books is cool, but I really expected more synergy with the ending of the old EU and the creation of the New EU. And you hit on a worry for me: the idea that they just threw out a bunch of red herrings.

And I get that they don't want to give away too much, but there is like 3 decades worth of stuff to explore between the Aftermath trilogy and the start of the Sequel Trilogy. Surely they could explore the Acolytes of the Beyond and not give away too much.
    3. Rose Tico story... I'm not going to judge until I see something, but I just didn't find the character very interesting. I think the idea of doing a series simply to piss of a group of fans as bad an idea as the idea that Episode IX ought to undo or simply ignore VIII. What worries me even more is the idea of doing a bunch of different series based on a character. I like the idea of a series like "The Mandalorian." I even like the idea of an Obi-Wan mini series and a Cassian Andor series (although I hope it's more of a Rebel Spies series and they are just calling it Cassian now as a form of short hand and because he will be the main character). But then you get the "Darth Bane" series... Young Lando series... Young Leia series and a Rose Tico series? I realize what is probably happening is this is the brainstorming and, like HBO "developing" up to 5 follow ups for Game of Thrones, only one or two will ever see the light of day. But I hope we aren't going to get a ton of shows based on one character.

So what would I like to see:
    1. The Mandalorian (obviously). Is it a one season series or will it be done over multiple seasons?
    2. Obi-Wan mini series.
    3. Rebel Spies. Cold War style spy drama featuring Cassian Andor and other rebel spies in the years prior to the Battle of Yavin. Could even tie in to and follow up on some of the stuff from Solo.
    If that isn't enough...
    4. The Sith and the Rule of Two. Featuring Darth Bane.
    5. A long series delving into the formation of the Jedi. All new characters, set way back in time.

Awesome! Thanks for answering! Your thoughts are 100% valid and I agree with a lot of them honestly.
That's fair! I asked because I watched and liked Rebels for what it was, but I find myself enjoying Resistance more overall. I was curious if that might be the same for you or provide any clarity as to how Resistance develops.

Yeah, the red herrings SUCK. I'm curious, what do you imagine that synergy would look like? I personally can't imagine it anymore than what they did for the most part.

You've got a really great point here.

Maybe it's like the flagship of this new "fleet" of shows? Like the other ones are one-shots so to speak, while this will make sure audiences stay connected?

    Yup

Okay, here's an idea. What if they do a show about the Rebellion with each season focusing on a different character/mission? That would be a way to get a show about Cassian, Leia, and whoever else they want at the time all at once.

    Can't fight that lol!

Great post, @Darth Wardawg :) I disagree with you on a lot of things (TLJ-related mostly), but this was a very good post. Reading this thread, In my head I was going, "oh great... we're a handful of posts away from this spiraling out of control, ending in mudslinging and circular arguments like every other post around here," and then you come along and slam a friendly, well-formulated, and wise post in the table. Kudos to you :)

I'm not interested in Rose Tico's story. I'm not interested by any character left, the feelings I had for this saga are gone, just like that.

I'm not even going to see ep IX in theater.

Absolutely, that's kind of where I was trying to go with that.

I do think that the timeline of the trilogy so far is severely limiting both in how we know the characters and how well the era could be expanded.

However, props to LFL and Rian for being somewhat innovative with the structure of a trilogy. Seems like often a trilogy includes an original film that could be standalone, followed by a darker second act that leads directly into the final film.

The original trilogy and prequels were basically like this, as was stuff like the original POTC films. It's even popular in video games (Halo and the Arkham series immediately spring to mind). It's just a common and natural momentum for storytelling.

So, by tying the first and second films closely together and (hopefully) making the third film stand more on its own, at least it could stand out as a different type of trilogy than we typically see in Hollywood.

I would love to see Darth Bane on the screen. Starting from his early days as a miner up to the point of him defeating all the other sith. Would be fun to watch that.

Let me make this clear: I liked Rose Tico.
I would also love to see her lead her own show, as she seemed a bit cheated in TROS, with her one “big” line being: “Gravity Wells???”
However, if Disney+ will be releasing only 1 or 2 shows a year, Rose Tico should not be that show, because there are other stories I feel are more important. But once we get to the era where there are more shows than we can count, then yes, I’d love to see a Rose Tico show.
