Can You Ever Forgive Me and If Beale Street Could Talk. Both are really good, especially the latter one, which is absolutely amazing and I'm sure it will be high on my list of favourite films of 2019. The fact that it didn't get a Best Picture nomination is a joke.

Happy Death Day - This was on TV the other night, so decided to watch it because of seeing the sequel trailers.

It defitnley has a Groundhog day kind of feel. I'm not much of a horror fan, and it's not the greatest movie ever made but it kept me interested. The main character Tree(weird name) on her birthday wakes up in the dorm room of a man she slept with after a party. She goes through life as usual with her sorority sisters. She basically just goes through life not thinking about much after her mom died years before. And avoiding her dad.

But after a party, she starts being harassed by a person in a baby mask and is murdered only to wake up exactly as the movie began. In a dorm room with the guy she slept with where it starts all over again in this murder loop. After this continues she tries to be a better person thinking it will stop. I thought this movie was fun, funny and kind of different. The only gripe I'd have is that the murders was mostly the same except a few. Maybe in the sequel they will be a bit more exciting and original and top the one before.

Without giving the killer a way. I figured who the killer was in 30 minutes. But it didn't take away from watching the movie. But I really want to know is how did she get stuck in this loop and why. Maybe the sequel explores that. I will for sure see the sequel when it comes out on DVD

Den of Thieves - starring Gerard Butler and Ice Cube's son who in my opinion stold the movie. It's about a heist that in the end made me question who was really who. It was a little slow but I was intrigued the whole way through and I liked the bad guys more than the cops. It made me wonder if one of the cops was really a bad guy playing along. It has a lot of twists.

The Sisters Brothers - I was surprised by this one. I was expecting the same 'ol same 'ol but a great cast and John C. Reilly stood out in a different way. Great story and fresh for this genre. It also has a really good moral.

Watched it on Wednesday. A slow burn, but a compelling story with some complex moral questions for the characters involved. I really enjoyed it.

Unfortunately I was forced to endure a Madea movie last night. I'd never seen one before and had never planned on seeing one but they're apparently a guilty pleasure of my girlfriend which officially makes her a guilty pleasure of mine. It wasn't the new one, she wasn't interested in seeing that one at the theater because she heard it wasn't very good (even by Madea standards) so she settled for waiting until that one is available to stream. She wanted to go see a different movie, Escape Room, which I had zero interest in seeing so as a compromise I watched Madea Goes To Jail with her at home. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, I'm somebody who has seen such crapfests as Weekend At Bernie's 2, Super Mario Bros. and more than one Pauly Shore film (not even a decent one like Encino Man) in the theater. Not to mention all the crap I've seen thanks to the guys at MST3K/Rifftrax, but at least with those they are making fun of them. So I have a pretty strong stomach for terrible films and it's certainly not Birdemic or The Room bad. None of those films made money hand over fist like these Madea movies though, and that I cannot understand.

I was surprised to discover that Madea is sort of a secondary character in these films. Or at least in this one and my soon-to-be-Ex (just kidding) informed me it's pretty much the same formula for all of them. The majority of the film was an over-the-top drama (more like a corny soap opera than a film) about a drug-addicted hooker and the lawyer who is trying to help her because he feels guilty about his fraternity gang-raping her when they were in college. His fiance (also a prosecutor) is jealous of the attention the hooker is getting and trumps up some charges to get her sentenced to something like 17 years in prison. Not exactly the dumb comedy I was prepared for. In a completely separate/less-developed storyline, almost a different film, you have Madea (who I admit had some funny moments) having her run-ins with the law that would eventually send her to prison where the two storylines intersect about 2/3 of the way through the movie. Don't worry... they get released once the fiance/prosecutor's trumped up charges are exposed.

If it had been all Madea it might have been a somewhat watchable, albeit stupid, comedy. The rest was disjointed, boring, poorly written and poorly directed/edited. It was made so badly made that it's hard to believe this is a big franchise. It just felt like such an amateur production. I wasn't expecting much but it still failed to meet my expectations. And with these three paragraphs I think I've put more thought into reviewing it than they did making it, so I'll stop here. Except to point out that this same girlfriend now refuses to go see the Apollo 11 IMAX movie with me... maybe I'm not joking about the Ex thing.

Watched Into The Spider-Verse again last night and still love it. Gotta admit when the big Sony leak came a couple of years ago and one of the things mentioned was an animated Spider-Man movie I just shrugged it off, but it's a truly cracking piece of cinema.

Tonight I'm catching another Oscar winner with Free Solo. This guy is nuts... absolutely nuts.

It was amazing. Lots of footage I've never seen and all the footage shot during the lunar orbits and landing were unreal in IMAX.

Saw Captain Marvel. It's a solid entry into the Marvel pantheon. It's mid-tier overall but IDK how much more you can expect from an "origins" movie anymore. They've been played a bazillion times. Would have been better to keep things in the Black Panther/Spider-Man route and work her in elsewhere first IMO. I like Brie Larson. Sam Jackson is always great. Ben Mendelsohn is amazing as always. Annette Benning and Jude Law work really well with what they are given as well.

The pacing is a bit staggered and I found the smaller action scenes much better than the big ones, in fact they left me underwhelmed.

But now I do worry about her future the same way I always worry about Superman in movies. It's difficult to make what are essentially gods feel relatable or ever in danger. They have to find a way to "nerf" her a bit post Endgame. Maybe the Tesseract is involved.

She is no Thor in which he is a legit "god". It helps that she has quote un quote Earth origins. So, get enough hits in she'll go down.

CAPTAIN MARVEL, had a blast with it. I liked Brie very much, she had great chemistry with everyone, Jackson especially and I liked this more relaxed Fury. Mendelson was fantastic, he radiated charm even through a ton of makeup, his comedic timing was gold. But, Goose the Flerken takes the cake! :D

I'd like to see it again soon.

No, but that goes to show you the great lengths they went to keep Thor more grounded because he could have basically won *most* of the Avengers fights by himself. I would have preferred they didn't solve ALL her inner turmoil so fast. It'd be like if Rey was over her parents being drunks who sold her off at the end of TFA.
