I think RJ is better suited for his own trilogy

I (obviously) disagree. To me, the script of TLJ is very strong and the service that this film did to the franchise will become even more obvious in IX.

For instance, where TFA was all about dragging people back into Star Wars and deeding us familiar loves, TLJ was about cleaning the slate for Ep.IX. TFA left the franchise with one sizable problem, the share number of important characters that further installments had to deal with, and RJ solved a lot of problems by killing off a whole slew of secondary and tertiary characters in a dramatic show of First Order power. And that’s not even touching on the emotional impacts, coming-full-circle character & plot moments, and just share feeling of threat and danger that TLJ gave us. But yeah, we disagree on so many things concerning TLJ that we run the risk of just circularly repeating ad nauseam, so I shan’t press this.

As to whether RJ is better off with his own series, I definitelly think he’ll come up with some pretty engaging stuff for this trilogy, but I sure would’ve loved to see him tackle other core-SW films too. Oh well, there’s so much Star Wars awesome coming our way that I can’t complain, really :) But I do hope we’ll get some more information on the direction and style and story where RJ’s trilogy (and the other shows and series) will be heading very soon; the wait is hard! :D

I agree, I think the dialogue is great in TLJ. But where Rian falls short (in many fans eyes) is his ability to tell a linear continuous story with a good tone. The problem I hear with a lot of TLJ critics is that they think the humor is out of place in TLJ and the few continuity issues in the film (such as how Finn and Rose make it back to the Crait base so quick after wrecking, and how PHASMA and her troops appear across the room unscathed walking thru smoke right after the explosion).

I do wonder if Rian Johnson's trilogy is going to happen as I hear so many rumors and opinions say its cancelled. I do hope we get a trilogy from RJ as I agree he could do magnificent things with his own characters and a clean slate

The "will it happen" thread was closed because it's been confirmed numerous times that the trilogy is going forward.

Some of the people who didn't like the film have tried to convince themselves that there has to be something objectively wrong with it so there's this silly "it was poorly written" mantra they keep repeating. Rian Johnson has now written four motion pictures. Brick is an amazingly written film and Brothers Bloom is one of my favorite con films.

There are a lot more people who love The Last Jedi than hate it. That seems to get lost sometimes.

I also agree with the continuity issues you discussed. Also when you said he had trouble writing a linear continous story. I knew when I saw TLJ I thought the movie was going to end many times, and then it switched to something else and I’m like ”oh, we still have more movie”. This made the movie feel a bit off to me. Even as I kept watching it at home once I had gotten the DVD, I still felt the same problem. However, I think he still has a ton of potential. As do his charecters to become something truly worthy of the Star Wars name.

All of these "issues" occur in other in other Star Wars films. Out of place humour? Just watch the carbonite freezing scene. Very tense, very dramatic and is finished with a comedic punchline from C-3PO about how Han would be fine if he had survived the freezing. Or how the finale is sprinkled with comedic discussins between C-3PO and R2-D2 about 3PO's leglessness, not trusting strange computers and differences between sockets and terminals. Continuity issues? Scene transitions do not always signalise immediate continuity between scenes between before and after the cut. That's not a continuity issue, that's basic filmmaking. Complaints like these are so insignificant and, let me be honest here, stupids that no one should bother with them.

I was watching TFA a couple of days ago and Kylo watches Starkiller Base destroy the Republic in the SKB orbit and then within minutes is on another ship and part of the attack on Takodana. I haven't seen anyone complain about this and they shouldn't.
This is spot on and sheds light on how desperate some of the complains are about TLJ. If you don't like story choices that's fine, but the attempts to complain about writing, plot errors, and continuity issues are mostly nit picky.

There is no way to tell if Rian Johnson is better suited for his own trilogy until we see this trilogy or at least know something (anything) about it.

Rian is a wonderful artist, and I'm sure his own trilogy will be at least as great as TLJ, and that, my friends, is something to look forward to :)

It's a good time to love Star Wars right now :-D

I always got the feeling in TLJ, despite liking the film, that RJ wasn't making a 'Star Wars film' he was making a 'Rian Johnson Star Wars Film'. He was pushing his interpretation of Star Wars Lore on the film which doesn't always work when you have such well established characters and rules from previous films.

If given his own trilogy i'm sure it would be original and have some great ideas and he wouldn't be running the risk of stepping on the toes of fans who loved the original stories and characters so much. However his films have to fall in to the rules of the Star Wars Universe even if he is doing his own trilogy.

That's why he was hired. That's why Gareth Edwards and Phil Lord & Chris Miller were initially hired - to make a personal Star Wars movie, to make Star Wars for at least one movie their own. That's what I believe was the intention behind hiring these guys (and, for that matter, the very diverse, both ethnically and in terms of style and experience list of directors for The Mandalorian.)

I have no issues with him being creative in his stories or with anyone being creative in their direction on Star Wars but they have to be consistent throughout the storytelling. If they are not all the different projects lose continuity.

I think that's more of a planning issue than an issue caused by different directors having different voices.

I loved The Last Jedi, but I think people will be more accepting of his writing when he isn't dealing with beloved characters with decades of nostalgia attached.

I'm curious if some of the Marvel-esque humor in both TFA and TLJ are because of JJ and RJ... or because of a corporate push towards a "lighter action-adventure".

I doubt that "lighter action adventure" stuff. TFA (and R1) are probably some of the darkest SW movies. Furthermore the humor in TFA is actually good.

I have never understood the "marvel humor" argument. Maybe it's because so many years in between film so people are disconnected from the humor of the films.

Personally, here's an example that took me out of TFA for a moment:

Kylo Ren stands over Poe after killing Lor San Tekka. I originally thought, "Oh wow this is dark, scary, cool." Then there was the Poe joke of "Who talks first?" Wasn't a huge problem for me--- but it immediately took me out of the moment.

I think many people feel like moments like this are interruptions with the intention of keeping things LIGHT.

Ultimately, good storytelling allows moments of sadness and fear. These are emotions that create strong attachments to characters.

Just my opinion and observation :)

This saga has execution scenes in Attack of the Clones and Return of the Jedi where people are making jokes.

This is why I don't understand the criticism. I don't think the films have changed. I think people have changed the way they experience the films.

SOME of the jokes fell flat with me, but not all. The scene that @Apollus08 mentions from TFA worked well for me. I get where he is coming from, but for me that scene worked. I think one could argue there was a bit too many of them in TLJ, but again, to each his own. Personally, and this is just me, I'd avoid the jokes as I'd be well aware of the "marvel-esque" criticisms. I'd instead err on the side of being more serious, but I'm not the film maker.

Rian Johnson doesn't deserve to make three more movies when he scarred us with the the worst star wars film since The Phantom Menace. Star Wars should not resemble a national lampoon vacation movie because Admiral Holdo refused to tell Poe Dameron crucial information about what the hell she is trying to do.

44% audience approval on RT does not lie.

    MOD EDIT
