It was my favorite when I first saw the OT. I still love it, the major flaws with it are just that the movie stalls when the Ewoks discover the Rebels and that some of the CGI is not as great as the CG in the two previous movies. And it wasn't very respectful to Leia to show her in the metal bikini, although I heard that Carrie Fisher requested it because she said that her outfits in ANH and ESB "didn't show enough that she's a woman". I don't know if that's true, but if it is I'll just accept the whole slave thing. Still, it's a great movie and I should see it again some time soon :) I absolutely love Palpatine (emperor) and the Vader-Luke story ark(red)(green). I would've liked to see more Yoda, but I don't really mind (yoda). Especially the scenes in Jabba's palace are great and I love the battle of Endor as well!

There should've been more of the one and only Admiral Ackbar, such an underused badass!(ackbar)

I hate to say this, but there is no there there in terms of cinematography. With ANH, it was directed by Lucas of course but Kurtz ghost directed many scenes and it helped elevate the film. But with Jedi, we have a play it safe Lucas ghost-directing for an inexperienced hack (Marquand) and it feels like what maybe the original cut of ANH would have resembled. At least in Jedi, it's a slight step above whatever the prequels were trying to do. Just be grateful computer technology in 1983 wasn't as advanced as it would be in 2003. Otherwise the franchise would have faded into obscurity decades sooner.

I LOVE ROTJ! As a kid I totally got into it without question. As an adult I appreciated it on a deeper level. Then a little further into adulthood I found one thing that I had to question. How was the plan to rescue Han supposed to go? I'm assuming that was we saw onscreen was either plan B or C. I'd like to know what was their "best case" scenario. I'm guessing that it was supposed to be:

    C-3PO give message to Jabba
    C-3PO and R2-D2 become Jabba's property
Jabba agrees to meet with Luke
Luke convinces Jabba to release Han, probably with Jedi mind trick, which Luke doesn't know won't work on Jabba

    Optional:

Luke uses Jedi mind trick to get Jabba to give C-3PO and R2-D2 back (if need be, droids remain Jabba's property)

    They all leave

But.... Leia goes in with Chewie before Luke ever comes to find out if Jabba will deal with him. She tries to free Han.

Soooooooo...... Leia was going to free Han, Chewie and the droids and sneak out before Luke comes to deal with Jabba?

Was Lando supposed to get Chewie and the droids out after Leia got Han out?

Did Leia go in because Jabba said that there would be no deal and Lando got that info back to Luke?

How does having Chewie be a prisoner in a dungeon help?

I wish I could know what the plan was supposed to be, what they had as backups, and where what we saw onscreen fit into it. I suspect that much thought was not actually put into it and was made the way it was because it was exciting and cool looking.

I rewatched the theatrical cut of ROTJ tonight. I bought it in DVD some years ago but unfortunately the audio and video quality are poor (lools like and old VHS...haha) but I prefer this version than the newer version with the those bizarres changes (musical at the jabba palace and Hayden's ghost for example).

The movie its a lot of fun.
I love the Vader and Luke dialogues and conflicts. Same to the scenes of Luke and Yoda when he is about to became one with force. Emperor Palpatine is fantastic here, also. Some shots are beautiful done, my favorite:

Yeah I don't have any idea why they took out the original song from Jabba's palace either.

Here's the Meco version of Lapti Nek I listen to on occasion. It's "interesting":

ROTJ is and probably will always be my favourite. The Father Vs Son finale alone makes it so.

However, the main thing that makes it my favourite is that it was the first SW film that I saw at the cinema. I was 6yo and remember wanting the Luke in black figure. I was told it was either get that or go and see the film which was out in a couple of weeks. Those two weeks were the longest ever! But I saw the film and made my mum stay for the entire credits.

Loved it. Still do. Even though it has problems now (mainly due to one particular Special Edition addition - Chewies Tarzan impression).

I always though this impression was in the original cut. Did they add this in the SE from 1997?

HaHa! You know, I'm not sure now! I don't remember hearing it when I was a kid, but I probably wouldn't have minded it so much then.

I’m right there with you although I was 9 & while I did see Empire at the Cinema ROTJ was the first one I have clear memories of including queuing outside the cinema to get the tickets (hey there was no pre booking in those days you turned up & hoped the film wasn’t sold out by the time you got to the ticket kiosk )

ROTJ was the first SW movie I watched when I was a kid. So I kinda seen the OT out of order. And just have always loved it.

Yep, I saw ANH first, on home video I think, then ROTJ at the cinema. It probably wasn't until a year or two later that I watched ESB. I wasn't too keen on Empire at first because the baddies won

I did know about Yoda though when I watched ROTJ because my best friend had an ESB school bag and it had a picture of Yoda on Luke's back. I was so jealous...

I give it a 10 (your usual Star Wars movie score :)). At first it was kind of meh but it really grew on me. My problems are the death of Boba, some awful green screens and a weird "Holiday Special looking" definition.

    I mean..

But it has some of the best moments of the entire saga: the emperor is awesome, everything involving Darth Vader and Luke is spectacular, the locations are incredible (Endor!), acting is really good, Lapti Nek and Yub Nub are like..the best thing ever, the ewoks are cool....

Oh, and the best moment in the entire saga:

I love Jedi, would have loved for Kershner to have directed it with Wookies, instead of Ewoks. Boba Fett is the only anomaly. Throne room scenes spectacular, but I think Rogue One's end battle takes Jedi's now. Grew to love those furry savages any who.

Does anyone know if it is true that George Lucas had originally envisioned Endor as being the home of the wookies but only thought he would get to make one movie so he put Chewie in the first movie because he liked Wookies so much then when it came to ROTJ cut the Wookies in half and reversed their name from wookies to ewoks?

Well, it wasn't Endor, but some of his early script treatments for the film that became Star Wars culminated in a battle between a primitave race of *Wookiees* against a technologically advanced Empire - which was basically abandoned once he honed the script for the first movie down to what it became. He felt he had made the Chewbacca character more advanced than the primitave race he originally intended - he could pilot ships etc - so when it came to the third movie he created the Ewoks as an alternative to the Wookiees he had originally envisaged making a last stand against the Empire...

The planet Kashyyyk being the homeworld of the Wookiees was established at least as far back as the Holiday Special in 1978, so far as I know - whereas Endor was developed purely for ROTJ and the Ewoks in the early 80s...

Not sure whether the name "Ewok" was chosen as spin on the word "Wookiee" - kind of makes sense, although the Ewoks were going to be long-legged creatures called Yuzzums for much of ROTJ's early development...

It's an interesting question, because it seems to be something Lucas was really passionate about to begin with, looking back at interviews from the time and the earlier drafts - this idea of the underdogs overthrowing an advanced dictatorship.
Obviously the more simple, human story eventually took centre stage, and the more political aspect kind of went on a back burner...

Hah - just hover over the icons at the bottom of a post to see what they all represent - for example, the first one, the green Alliance symbol, is a "like" if you choose to click on it...

There's a whole reel of the film that looks strangely fuzzy and out of focus. All the home release versions have looked this way, certainly since the Special Editions at least.
However, some of the recent fan releases made from restored prints of the film don't seem to have this problem (at least not to the same extent) which would suggest to me LucasFilm have been using the same flawed master and didn't even notice/couldn't be bothered fixing this problem.

The name was inspired by the Miwok Indian tribe indigenous to the Marin County area of California where Skywalker Ranch was built.

I honestly cannot rank the OT.
ANH is a perfect fairy tale/movie if taken in a vacuum.
    Empire... is Empire.
But ROTJ finale is what made the Saga, for me.
My favourite moments of the entire first VI movies are ROTJ and RotS finale 30''.
I can skip everything but those.
