I think RJ is better suited for his own trilogy

I'm confused. Is Rian now just working together with the Game of Thrones guys now and not doing his own trilogy?

Yes, but their projects might have connections together. Like a mini MCU of a decade of Star Wars.

Thanks. I ask because there are certain people out spreading misinformation and statinig it's been axed. Yet KK only says he and the GoT guys will be working together. So I assume he is working on his trilogy and they theirs, but they are also working together.

The production teams for the various trilogies (and TV shows, too, I imagine) will cooperate and help each other out, just like it's been with all 5 Disney SW films up until TRoS. People share ideas, read each others scripts, seed crossover-plot points in one another's projects, etc. etc. :D

People claiming RJ has been axed is nothing new. That has basically been a weekly affair since TLJ came out.

Let the record show that I never claim the RJ Trilogy was already officially axed. All I've ever said - and continue to maintain - is that there will be no Rian Johnson Trilogy.

One of the problems with Rian, I feel, is his lack of knowledge of canon. So even with his own Trilogy I do not think he will benefit the franchise

RJ has stated that he’s seen the Mortis Trilogy of The Clone Wars and that he’s played (and loved) KOTOR, so he’s at least a little experienced with media outside of the films. Besides, his role as director/writer should be to serve as a good storyteller and the LFL Story Group will advise and help make his story fit into canon, which worked for The Last Jedi in my opinion.

You're not the first person to voice this opinion. However, no one has worked more closely with the story group so far than Rian Johnson. I'm not sure where this idea comes from, but nothing in The Last Jedi violates canon or shows a lack of knowledge about Star Wars.

Maybe the problem isn't Rian Johnson. Maybe some people just don't understand Star Wars lore as much as they think.

Rian pulled a very obscure piece of Star Wars lore for his finale in TLJ. He has a very deep knowledge of SW.

No, the problem is definitely Rian Johnson. Thankfully that's a problem we won't have to deal with any longer in the GFFA since he's not doing E9 and there will be no Rian Johnson Trilogy.

Rian Johnson will be better suited to his own Trilogy,

I personally think giving him Episode 8 was a mistake on Kathleen Kennedy's part, having a writer/director who has been on record saying that his perfect film is one that divides the audience should not have been let anywhere near the Saga films.

Having said that I'm sure his own trilogy where he'll be able to create his own characters for his own story will be fine.

I actually feel that he has a good knowledge of canon. He's just want of these artsy people that want to surprise their audience. I wants to make a mark. He thinks it's about him. So, he uses what is canonical to "make art" and shock people, instead of using canonical material to guide him to make good Star Wars. What are you rambling about ObeeJaun?

Well he looked through canon (or just asked Pablo) and found that no one had ever "force projected", which means that he could invent it....ok, fine with that....had Reylo forcetime....ok, fine with that...."forcetiming is so hard it will kill" you says Kylo, "she must be AMAZING"......wait wut IT KILLS YOU?.....kills our hero at least one episode early because HE wants to be the one that makes Luke disappear in a poetic Obi-Jaun way. I mean, if we are all honest, we thought Luke would probably die before the end of the ST, RJ just wanted to be the one remembered for killing him.

Yes, he watched the Mortis arc with Pablo.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 27, 2019 ---
I'm not contesting you, I'm just wondering what you are referring to. I think he made up force projection because it hadn't been ruled out.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 27, 2019 ---
So we are basing his "working with the story group" to watching 3 episodes of TCW with Pablo and playing video games, so what you are telling me is that I am as equally qualified to direct a SW film?...Great choice KK.

I will add that I don't think RJ is necessarily a bad director, check out my Rian Johnson's Music Video thread.

No. I just included Mortis and KOTOR as examples of Johnson’s experience with Star Wars outside of the films. And besides that, the point I was trying to make was that his knowledge of lore is irrelevant to his ability as a storyteller, which is far more important to film making. If a guy knows every single detail there is to know about Star Wars, but doesn’t know a thing about character development, themes, or anything else invloving writing, then no, they are not qualified to direct a Star Wars films.

You seem to think Rian is this arrogant guy who cares more about attention than creating a good movie. I don’t know where you’re getting that idea from, but even if that were true, he still made a film that was a critical and financial success. Based off of actually reliable sources like CinemaScore, as well as other factors such as its performance on home video, most general audience members seemed to like it. All of that is exactly why Johnson is getting his own trilogy. I do agree that he’s not a bad director; I’d like to check out some of his other work outside of and I may even see Knives Out this fall.

You know, I really don't know what his motivations were. I don't get the man. He's someone who's been quoted as saying "a good movie is one that divides the fanbase". Well, he certainly did that. He set out to divide the fan base, to shock and awe. Holy shizzle! RJ is a success!

Yes, he made a movie that made a lot of money, something I could not do, but he made a lot of money because its Star Wars. It would have made a ton of money no matter what, and don't even bring up Solo, because Solo tanked because TLJ sucked. Casual fans who would normally have gone to solo did not go because RJ made a bad movie. If tRoS came out right on it's tail, it would tank too. Luckily it didn't.

PS-time will tell....RJ will not get his trilogy. He will, at best, get one more movie.

Can people quit quoting this out of context quote from over 15 years ago that has nothing to do with Star Wars? Was Brick, Brothers Bloom, Looper and Breaking Bad burdened by divided audiences? It's a silly argument created by the angry fanboy YouTube crowd and it's not something that should be used for serious discussion. Also, 80% of people who saw the film liked it. That's not a divided audience.
Whatever happens in the future likely has less to do with Rian Johnson but the future for Star Wars films. If these movies can't find an audience in China we may not see a Star Wars film every year. It's crystal clear Disney/Lucasfilm/Kennedy are very happy with Rian Johnson. If Johnson doesn't make another Star Wars film it will be a change of plans fueled by the film landscape. It won't be because a few people are mad online.
It really is a bizarre. Rian Johnson has been the one of the most down to Earth, nice guys making films.

As far as working with Lucasfilm, Rian Johnson moved to San Francisco to work with the group for a few months as he was writing the film. Him collaborating with Kennedy, Benioff and, Weiss over the next ten years is great news for Star Wars fans. Even if he never makes another Star Wars film his fingerprint in going to be on the future of Star Wars films and that's great news.

I don't see why you want people to quit quoting this, it's hardly out of context or a silly argument!

It's Rian Johnson himself stating that he thinks that a perfect film divides the audience which is exactly what happened with TLJ and it really doesn't matter if his previous work has done this or not.

How on earth do you know 80% of the audience liked it, if you can show me these figures you keep stating then fine I'll agree. But I honestly think you are underestimating the volume of people who disliked TLJ and just disregarding them as a small vocal minority of angry fanboys. Perhaps it's a case of angry Rian Johnson fanboys who can't accept that some people dislike TLJ.

Personally I like Rian Johnson and I loved Looper, I just don't like TJL.

Every scientific measure shows that 80% of people liked it, but this isn't the thread to explain scientific sampling. There's no scientific controlled sample that has ever shown otherwise.
This is a quote that has zero to do with Star Wars and it's being used in a bad faith. If you are unable to concede that then we probably don't have much room for reasonable conversation.

Hmm... So basically you are saying you can't or won't show me any figures to back up your statement. How has this quote been used in bad faith? Does it really matter when Rian Johnson said it, the fact is that this is what he thinks.

Look I'm not an unreasonable person, I'd be more than happy to accept your claim that 80% of fans loved TLJ if you can show me the figures. However I do think you underestimate the number of fans who dislike TLJ and I get the impression that if anyone has an issue with TLJ or Rian Johnson then you consider them an angry fanboy. This just isn't the case

Yes! EXACTLY! It's like me saying, It's a scientific fact that 80% of fans did not like TLJ...there, prove it wrong.

I feel that it's the exact opposite. If you have a problem with someone NOT liking TLJ, YOU are an angry fanboy. Look, just because it's SW, doesn't mean it's great.
