I know several people have been debating which Death Star is in the Episode IX trailer. I've noticed an interesting detail about the dish and wanted to share:

If looking at the dish in the trailer, you can see that it has a dark outer ring near the edge, which is present on the first Death Star. This ring isn't as distinguished on the second Death Star and isn't as close to the edge. Story wise, especially with Palpatine back in the picture, it would make sense for the Death Star to be the one from ROTJ. However, I'm now leaning more towards it being the first Death Star.

If 1st Death Star - Location could be somewhere in Yavin System (keep in mind it doesn't have to be on Yavin 4)

If 2nd Death Star - Location could be somewhere in the Endor System (there are a total of nine moons around the gas giant, with ROTJ taking place only on the Forest Moon)

If Other - Perhaps this was a failed prototype or 3rd Death Star? It sure looked like both of them were completely obliterated with no large sections remaining intact.

Death Star I Dish (note the noticeable dark outer ring)

Death Star II Dish (no distinguishable outer ring)

Rise of Skywalker Death Star Dish (outer ring is present)

What do you guys think? Are there any other features that could indicate it being one or the other?

It's still a "fielder's choice" at this point. It really could go either way.

Death Star II is the only one that would logically make sense due to the Palps showing up. I'd imagine if something secret was on board the first one, he would of recovered it at some point before his death in Death Star II. Not to mentioned R2 hacked into first Death Star so he would more than likely been aware of the secrets of the first death star.

Here's an enhanced version of the shot. It looks like you can make out the trench at the bottom right surrounded by panels:

The 1st Death Star had a smooth area around the trench:

Whereas the 2nd had a thin smooth area around the trench:

This could point to it being the 2nd Death Star, but still doesn't explain the dark outer ring on the dish.

It's all just lighting, angles and proportions. I think it only makes since for it to be the 2nd death star, appearances aside, due to sith being able to attach to artifacts and the fact that Palpy is backy.

What I don't get is though, if the DSI was the size of a small moon, and the DSII was significantly larger, wouldn't it be way bigger?

I assumed II, but it's clearly the design of the first one

I'm putting two and two together (and probably coming up with 47), but like others have suggested, and with my initial thoughts, it is the DS2. Only because of the Palpatine connection and it is supposedly his final resting place.

Is it mentioned in Canon that The Emperor visited DS1? I've read a few books, but not many comics, and I can't remember it being mentioned if he did.

IMO it has to be the second Death Star because this is the only reasonable way (for me) to bring Palpatine back. His spirit could be tied to his place of death.

But comparing the image of the teaser with images of the other movies is useless anyways. The proportion or size is off for both Death Stars. Sometimes you don't have to think too much about stuff. It's cool visuals > correct looks. It probably won't even be specified (in the movie) which DS it is, I guess.

Not yet but feel free to create one

I must admit I thought it was the DSII as that was a lot closer to the Forest moon & the Palpatine connection but it’s certainly possible that it the first one & that’s one of the other moons in the Yavin system ( although thematically that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense) the same goes for DSII as using one of the other Endor moons again wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense from a story perspective.

I'd say second Death Star, because that was the concept developed for The Force Awakens which they've gone back and revisited for this movie...

I heard somewhere that the group may be looking for the falcon's rectenna that Lando snapped while cruising through DS2 during the battle of Endor. That would have some poetry to it considering Lando is back.

Well if Palpatine attached himself to it, I would go with DS 2.

Plot-wise, it makes way more sense for it to be the second. It was huge (harder to completely destroy) and it was partially hollow, meaning it wouldn't have imploded like the first. The Emperor laughs right after the shot of it as well, so there's likely a connection between this Death Star and his survival.

I'm going with DS2, even though it looks identical to the DS1.. probably a design fail.

After the OP post I am more inclined for DS 1.
Also, we see Leia (?) holding the ceremonial medal. And the medal probably is in Yavin IV.
I will vote for DS I.

Yeah, I guess for it to look that unclear, and considering it's massive size, it could and likely would have to be several miles away.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 20, 2019 ---
The medal could be on the Falcon. And from the training remote and helmet still being on the falcon in TFA, clearly Han doesn't get rid of anything....

Based upon the teaser I would say it is the second Death Star. But that could have been misdirection on the part of the PTB.
