I remember my reaction to Oathbringer (that's actually a title, I know, I made this mistake too): "I don't know about this...", and then Dalinar confronted the Big Bad with a book like a BOSS and now he is my favorite character (Sorry, Kaladin and Jasnah).

Ha! NotW! I haven't read that in...five years? Not since around WMF came out. The Legendarium Podcast (highly recommend it if you haven't listened to them) explain that he's so successful because he's narrating his own story. If we talked to other people in the story outside of Kvothe's narration we'd find out the story was...less than what we hear. But I guess that's also a given.

But the looks of astonishment as you read the behemoth in public are always worth it. ;)
I'll do my Cosmere re-read when Book 4 gets a release date and/or when Mistborn 7 is about to come out.

"YOU CANNOT HAVE MY PAIN." The entirety of Unity brings me to tears at times.

Cadia Stands, about the planet Cadia and their battle to save the planet from siege and destruction. This is in the Warhammer Universe.

Rothfuss is following GRRM's footsteps with the third book, only he has relative youth on his side. But, it's hilarious that Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy is supposed to be just an intro to a larger story.

I know Kvothe is unreliable narrator, but in certain moments, I am like:

    tony.gif

The world is great thought and I want more of some side characters. I'll get over it.

Man, I might reread the series now (once I'm done with Kingkiller).

I have tried on three different occasions to read Name of the Wind. The writing itself is beautiful but the plot is just not that interesting.

BTW, it's not that great. You get some unnecessary gay characters pushed on you, a sex scene (both totally not necessary in Star Wars, just totally not necessary to the story), and some other mildly interesting background on the handmaidens.

Still plugging along with Asimov's Robots/Empire/Foundation Universe, up to the point of re-reading the Foundation Trilogy. Foundation finished and Foundation And Empire up next. In addition to these I've been reading this...

It's been a LONG time since I read The Right Stuff and I don't really know all that much about Shepard besides what's in the film and that great episode of From The Earth To The Moon about Apollo 14. He gets mentioned a lot in all these other astronaut bios I've read (particularly Gene Cernan's, who was Alan's backup on 14) so I thought I would read up on the man himself.

Just finished duel of the fates. And just started the "Der letzte Jedi" (The last Jedi) novelization, thanks to the great guys at starwars-union.de who let me win one of their prizes from their 19 years anniversary competition.

So fin got around to starting Fire & Blood.
I’m only 2 chapters this in but I’m really enjoying it the one thing so far though is that Cerci really wasn’t very good at history as she basically did something very similar to Harren the Black at Harrenhall with very similar results.

Still in my reading slump, kinda. I'm finding it hard to get the motivation to read new books. Buying them isn't the problem, but I don't feel the urge to read them.
So instead I've been rereading Sanderson's works. A couple of weeks ago it was The Rithmatist. Last week I reread the Mistborn Trilogy. This week it's the Reckoners trilogy, starting with Steelheart.

Steelheart holds a special place in my (steel)heart because it was the first Sanderson book I read. I was at a Barnes and Noble and saw this shiny cover and noticed that the book was all about superheroes. Or an interesting twist on them. So on a whim I bought it, and really enjoyed it. That was in 2014.
Having read so much of Sanderson since I think I see a few more cracks in the series, but it's still been a fun ride so far. The Reckoners themselves retroactively remind me of Kelsier's crew, and I see a theme in Sanderson's YA books now with David. David, Joel (The Rithmatist's protagonist), and Spensa (Skyward's protagonist) all start out being intimately knowledgeable about areas they're passionate in - more than most YA protagonists I've read. For Joel it's Rithmatics; for Spensa it's piloting; for David it's Epics and everything about them, all for the explicit purpose of understanding and murdering them. This obsession isn't a bad thing because it gives the characters a way to explain what's going on to the audience while allowing them to still be outsiders and therefore sympathetic. But now it IS noticeable.

The book right now makes me hope that he and Dan Wells can figure out how to fix The Apocalypse Guard, because I really want to read it someday.

So...by "this week," I apparently meant "these next 2 days." ...yeah, I finished the trilogy. It's not that impressive, considering the pacing, nature, and page count. But still...
Anyways, my thoughts - I partially agree with what I said about the Reckoners as a group being like Kelsier's group. But instead of a straight comparison, I believe it's more like an inversion. Prof. isn't Kelsier, David isn't Vin (despite their instinctive skill in certain attributes), and Megan isn't Elend. Heck, David's more like Elend than Megan is. But something about how the series goes makes me feel like Sanderson was trying to prove that he could destroy tropes he's used in the past in an interesting way, and maybe it was a little too much of that for me this readthrough.

On the bright side, I found the plot twists to be FAR less like a "Deus Ex Machina" than before. When I first read the books, the ending felt too open ended for me. There were so many other things set up that I felt needed to be answered or explained, and never were. This time they didn't stick out as much and the final pages felt a lot more contained. Maybe it's the knowledge that Sanderson does/did have another story planned that helped? I have no idea, but I'm not as bothered by it as I was.

To be fair, I feel as if my criticism of Sanderson's endings still stands. Rarely - if ever - has Sanderson actually had to end a series for good and never look back. All of his non-earth fantasy is set in the Cosmere, so what is an ending there (and even solo books like Elantris and Warbreaker have sequels planned)? His YA books are unfinished: Rithmatist's sequel has been put on hold for over 5 years, the Reckoners trilogy was supposed to be followed up by The Apocalypse Guard, and Skyward isn't finished yet. And while Sanderson's novellas are mostly one-shots, that doesn't really speak to his ability to end multi-character and multi-book long series.

Wheel of Time is a big exception to that rule, and one that counts in Sanderson's favor, but I'm pretty sure the last chapter was written (or at least outlined) by Robert Jordan before his death, so he knew who needed to live and who needed to die.

Anyways, I liked Firefight about as much as last time, but I definitely liked Calamity more this time. I do hope The Apocalypse Guard gets released someday because I'm still excited for it and there are mysteries still waiting to be solved. "There's always another secret."

Just finished New Jedi Order books Edge of Victory I & II, and Star By Star all in the same week, and am about to start on Dark Journey.

These books have me hooked like a crack addict, let me tell you. Especially after the emotional cascade of Star By Star.
