I thought a November release would be a good time frame for a film like this... these type of films are harder sell these days, but the cast should help. November should avoid the Summer blockbuster type of competition. I would imagine RJ will be done with post production in 3-4 months.

It's Oscar-release season. Late November and December, so it makes sense. I don't know that it is a hard sell. I suspect they realize this film won't be a blockbuster, but they are going to try and sell it to the audiences who enjoy these sorts of films.

That is a understatement … the cast is pretty insane.

It is now easier to list who isn't in it than who is.;)

EDIT: I've only just realised that there will be no movie on the horizon after IX:( Such thoughts didn;t trouble me before I joined this site.

This is true only until we get information to the contrary. And Star Wars Celebration is coming up and there's probably gonna be a ton of new stuff announced and teased there ;)

But yes, it is mainly TV shows for a while now, it seems.

Not quite what Bob Iger said in the fall. He said they would focus on the Mandalorian and on the trilogy by the D&D team (Game of Thrones guys).

I feel like guessing whether or not his trilogy was canned without a major trade publication like THR or Variety indicating that the Johnson-Lucasfilm relationship has soured isn't really worth spending that much time, especially considering that Rian is currently making a completely different movie, so there won't be any major developments on the front of his trilogy at least until late 2019. Think about it - had Rian done something inappropriate or Lucasfilm had not been happy with him, would they have allowed him to make a non-SW film before enbarking on creating a whole trilogy of films. Besides, I cannot stress it enough, Lucasfilm and Disney are quite happy with TLJ. It made them over $1.3 billion, had very positive reviews, gave Disney satisfying rise in merchandise and was also made in collaborative atmosphere, had a shoot that was calm and had a very good atmosphere (thanks to Ram Bergman's, Rian's long-time producer, good organisational skills) and was finished four months before the premiere. Not only that, Rian is not a sex offender and also shows up to the work, something that doesn't seem to be that obvious for a director, but I digress. Bob Iger may not be attached to Rian as he is to JJ, he may also prefer TFA, because it is more friendly to the masses, but there really isn't that much that he may have against him. He was signed up for a job and he delivered and since they were happy with the results they offered him to extend his contract.

    Let's take it there...ha

(maybe if he were, TLJ would have been nominated for best picture)

To further your point, if they did have an issue with Rian, they wouldn't asked him to direct Episode 9 before asking JJ to do it as a last ditch effort.

By "horizon" I meant nothing coming to the cinema the following year. I should have phrased it better.

You guys do know that it's debuting a week after Frozen 2. The brats are gonna drag their moms & dads to go c Frozen 2 over Knives Out.

My prediction. K O breaks even despite the all star cast.

Who said anything about Knives Out being a box office smash? It's a small film. Pretty much all the top box office films are franchise/sequel films. I'm just hoping the film is good. I don't really care about the box office.

Some are just being juvenile and hoping that Knives Out will be bad, actually they want it to be awful so they can say "Rian Johnson really sucks".

It has a somewhat uphill battle to make a profit already. It's a drama/thriller with a 40m budget.
I would compare it to 2018's WIDOWS. (which is amazing and more people need to watch it). Similar budgets, big casts, thrillers....it likely failed to make money and may have barely broken even by the end.

So it's already likely it won't be a big B.O. numbers winner.
It's gonna fall on Lionsgate to promote it properly and hopefully get it some clout come awards season for a nice boost.

It's a shame traditional film making is declining. Behind all the Endgame box office headlines is the fact that since 2000, the number of people going to the movies has been declining.

It's a shame. We're gonna have a series of Disney remakes and sequels because they'll be one of the few companies who can actually afford to make them. Smaller stories will have to go on TV. I love Marvel/Pixar/Lucasfilm, but it would be nice if there was room for films like Lincoln in the future.

Agreed. It's made more difficult by the availability of things on streaming, people don't feel the need to go see smaller films in theaters for 13 bucks a ticket.
Watch it in theaters or wait to stream it for free or a few bucks on rental.

People will still go see the "theater experience" flicks in cinemas. But the smaller movies? It's very unlikely they will.

40 million is much for a "small" film. 30 million of that is probably going to the A listers.
