The Mandalorian. The first live-action Star Wars TV show. What are your hopes for the show and what are some of your fears for it?

My hopes are for a high quality first live action production. My fears lie in the quality of the antagonist, he seems promising, but at the same time trailers can only show so much.

An interesting question. (I was about to start a thread with this very same question.)

HOPE: above all, I want a show that has the same production values as a movie, but at a fraction of the cost. Why is this important? Because it will finally allow Disney to make multiple storylines to satisfy all fans. At the moment, the OT fans are the ones receiving the most attention, and prequel fans like myself has been left fighting for scraps. If this Disney+ experiment works, I can foresee a day when there will be more shows than movies, a plethora of Star Wars content. That would be beautiful.
HOPE: I keep hearing from various sources that this show will feature incredible and revolutionary special effects, as we can expect with Jon Favrau who gave us the visually mind-boggling Jungle Book. I am hoping for world-building to the scale of Episodes I-III, as opposed to planets that look suspiciously like earth. The fact that the show is filming on a tiny set in LA gives me hope.

FEAR: I have many fears for this film, the greatest being that this will be loaded with OT fan service. Already, I can see this happening in the Celebration screening, which referenced EU Mando material, Jabba’s talking door-knocker, and even Salacious B. Crumb. Of course, what we saw at Celebration was a very brief clip.
FEAR: The Mandalorian is NOT Boba Fett. the fact the Mando has no name, appears walking around Tatooine, and has a shady past implies he might be Boba Fett. I sincerely hope he is revealed to be Boba at the conclusion of the show.
FEAR: The story will be bland. in the Celebration clip, the Mando takes on a risky job for money. Will this entire show revolve around him trying to look for one guy? Will all 8 episodes revolve around him traveling to different places just to fulfill something promised in the first episode? I’ve heard interesting rumors (which I won’t get into here) about the person the Mando is trying to find, but so far the story feels kinda minimal.

My hope is that The Mando's storytelling and production are of high enough quality that Disney is encouraged to take what were the Anthology films concept and adapt them to Disney+. I think the potential with the Disney+ format and SW storytelling is just through the roof. I was a fan of the concept of the "SW Story" movies, but thought the execution was lacking ... we all know the stories of the rocky productions of both films. I really believe that if handled correctly, this platform can serve as a way to really tell a thorough story that maybe can't be done within the parameters of a two-hour movie.

My fear is that the story group at LFL will continue to place a priority on filling some vague, intangible diversity quotas over great storytelling (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/22/movies/star-wars-last-jedi-women-run-universe.html). I mean, I don't care if the characters are white, black, purple, male, female or whatever so long as the story is served -- and I don't think this group has served the stories well of late. I have faith in Jon Favreau as a moviemaker and film technician, so I'm hopeful this series will be in the vein of SW Rebels, with great character development, space battle action and a moving story, more than a film like Solo, which shoe-horned in weird social themes (droid rights?!?!) and TLJ (Canto Bight = Capitalism Bad).

I hope we get some closure on Cad Bane.

I fear ... honestly, I don't really fear anything. I haven't gotten too closely attached to this series yet, so I feel like the stakes are pretty low for me right now. Either I'll get to see an amazing TV show, or life will simply move on. So I guess maybe I simply fear the Star Wars fandom having another huge schism for some stupid reason again.

I think the canon fate of Cade Bane is he was gunned down by Boba. At least, that's what I'm assuming from those animatics Filoni showed off a few years ago. Don't know whether or not this will be one of the arcs of TCW S7 though...

These two fears seem at odds with one another. On one hand you don't want fan service, but on the other hand you want Boba Fett to be revived, which would be a most egregious form of fan service.

At this point I don't have too many fears. I hope we get a solid story from a different vantage point in the galaxy. Plain and simple.

Actually, scratch that, I do have one major fear..........That Disney + wont come to Canada in good time!

That's definitely possible, but I'm hesitant to take a low res deleted scene as the canon fate of one of my favorite characters. ;)

I don't have any fears. This show looks amazing and I think that, given the premise, they would have to actively make it bad for me to dislike it.

My hope/dream is that this show would span multiple seasons and eventually go to Mandalore and deal with the politics there. I'm not counting on it though. A short series about a lone Mando gunslinger and the remnants of the Empire trying to maintain their control would be more than enough.

I'm hoping some older bounty hunters (Bossk, Dengar) are involved in the show so that we can have flashbacks to the original and prequel eras. Right now I'm listening to Dark Disciple and would like to see Ventress in live action... meaning flashbacks seem to be the only way.

Who would you see playing Ventress?

Karen Gillen is maybe too obvious a choice since she was Nebula, but I could also see Ruby Roe being great in it.

Ooooooh, good question and good suggestion. I'd have to think about this one. To get some actresses names I went to imdb and they actually had an image of Krysten Ritter (who plays Jessica Jones) on the front page. She'd be a decent choice. Maybe Christina Ricci?

Great call. Needs more Quinlan Vos for perfection, tho.

Damn. Those pesky old Jedi keep popping their heads up, everywhere.

And R.R. as Ventress? Spot on.

I agree with the first Fear. I actually kinda feel that the clip at Celebration was not the real scene, but cut to be more fan service. Think the real scene will be more spread out with perhaps other portions added of other characters.
I disagree with the second Fear. Seems to be the ultimate fan service would be for the Mandalorian to be Boba Fett. That is just such a yawner for me. I actually fear this especially with Pedro Pascal as the actor. He is capable of so much more personality and that doesnt fit the dry boring Boba Fett. Getting the armor is all the Boba Fett I need. After all other then cool armor Boba Fett is borefest of a character.

My 2nd biggest fear is that Mandalorian will be 100% free of the Force. I dont need Jedi, but the galaxy shouldnt be Force free.

Hopes: Well, I want it to feel like Star Wars, just without all the Jedi/Force related stuff; think of a cross between Firefly and Rogue One. I think Firefly is a good tone to go for seeing as it's also a literal "space western", and I liked how Rogue One "grounded" everything and made it a tad bit more "gritty" while still feeling very much like Star Wars. Also, I'm hoping that this will pave the way for more live-action series and stuff set between RotJ and TFA, but closer to RotJ in the early days of the New Republic; which I really want to see in properly in The Mandalorian if possible. Another hope I have is that it'll be mostly practical effects and very little CGI. Even though CGI has come along way, there's just no replacing the impact of shooting on physical sets and on actual locations; everything feels much more tactile and believable. That was a strength of the OT, Rogue One, and TFA.

Fears: OT characters being brought it to boost viewership or create hype. They were able to get away with it in Rebels and Rogue One, but I don't want the series to just be a "cameo of the week" type thing. I don't want them recasting more characters from the OT or bringing in, say, Boba or even Ahsoka, because I think the show should be given its own room to grow and let its characters "speak for themselves". That was a minor complaint I had with Rebels, they had Lando, Leia, Ahsoka, Vader, and Tarkin all appearing throughout the show early on. I'm also slightly worried it'll be bland, but I'm not exactly sure why. I have no reason to feel this way, but I can't shake the feeling that it'll be like Resistance or Rebels season 1 and be mostly filler or "week to week".

My hope is that I'll finally start to understand the allure that Boba Fett and the Mandalorians have on a subset of the fanbase...

    Hopes

Some good pulpy Star Wars action
The eventual appearance of force users

    Fears

I fear it will be too gritty and dark, and never get to that fun Star Wars place. I love the scum and villainy, but it only works for me in the larger context of Star Wars. By itself, it's like one ingredient of a meal you really like. Not bad necessarily but not remarkable.
