I’d like to see a Vader and Emperor movie

    I didn't complain, I offered an opinion.

The inherent flaw in backwards story telling is it limits your world. R1 and Solo are good movies and I probably even like R1 more than most do.
But they ultimately shrink the world.
We will have 9 movies that deal with Darth Vader and the Emperor and the fallout of their actions.
We have an animated TV show based on the growth of Anakin into Vader.
Both even had key roles in big moments in Rebels.

What would this sort of story telling provide other than fan service?
This, as others suggested above, could work best as a Disney+ show.
The movies, from here out, should focus on expanding the world not shrinking it.

Part of why the MCU kicks every other franchises ass right now, is they are always moving forward in their universe in multiple ways.

I guess you've never seen the first Captain America movie in the MCU then because it moved the story backward and was great.

It moved the story forward by bringing Captain America to the modern age and introduced the first Infinity Stone.

    Yes. I like that idea.

Somebody did a short fan film along those lines.

Its called 'Shards Of The Past'. It was done pretty well.

In fact , I think that if a fan made a feature length film about Vader and Palpatine during the Rogue One/Solo time period
It would probably be better than anything since ROTJ.

Vader and Palpatine are $$. Don’t tell me it would not be popular lol. It probably make more than any film in history. Definitely an opportunity to give Snoke a backstory too.

And what is this retarded thought process that thinks “fan service” is bad? “Fans” pay the bills and distinguish one off Movies like Matrix or Avatar from Saga movies that are able to span generations and remain relevant.

Maybe McDonalds should switch from ground beef to ground horse cause burger Fans like beef?

Yes. McDonalds has never ever introduced new products to try and get new fans.
This is clearly a sound argument.

A closer analogy might be McDonalds still making the Big Mac while introducing new items alongside. With Star Wars, I think plenty of people still have an "appetite" for the original characters that were a part of what made the franchise popular to begin with. It's not like McDonalds is going to be taking the Big Mac off the menu anytime soon. ;)

Right. Which is why you can still get the Star Wars "Big Mac" There have been 6 films directly ABOUT those 2 characters and another FOUR tangentially about them and their legacy.

The main comic run has been Vader-centric.

Eventually Star Wars will have to grow beyond these characters from 1977 or it will get stale. There's really not a whole lot more to do in a movie about Vader or Palps. We kind of saw their entire lives on screen between the PT, OT, TCW and Rebels. At some point, it feels like fans will be asking for 90 minutes of Vader trying to figure out how to efficiently poop in his outfit.

For that, there's Robot Chicken. ;) You're right though. Things do need to move along. However, I believe that there is room for new material about the old characters as well. I think Star Wars could have a pretty diverse menu if the producers were of the mind to do it. I could certainly see something like a Vader-Palpatine miniseries happening alongside the TV shows and main films moving forward. I'd watch it, and everything else for that matter. :D

With books and comics especially, there is a TON of Vader and Palpatine stuff out. People just have to consume it.

A Vader movie would just piss a bunch of people off, honestly, because no matter what story gets told, it won't be the story that some portion think it should have been, and they will be pretty devoted to their idea of Vader that the film doesn't align with in their opinion.

Even folks in this same thread all agreeing on getting a Vader film wouldn't agree on whether an actual Vader film was good if one was made.

    "It's a trap!"

The sooner that Disney can leave behind anthology characters and on to characters no one knows jack all about, the more easy it will be to not have these things happen.

Now, personally, I feel that Star Wars will run into problems of being derivative if it can't create another Saga that is independent of the current Saga; if all Star Wars ends up becoming is basically like Star Trek where there's just a series of people and things they did, with no greater epic and operatic Saga attached, then it will become very superficial. Unlike Star Trek, Star Wars doesn't have anything to offer science fiction - it's a fantasy. It doesn't have anything to give us about our future world ideas, or anything to do with science. It's basically more alike Lord of the Rings, or GoT than it is Star Trek. It needs an epic arc, like Dune, to survive properly.

Rehashing the same characters eventually runs into a problem for epics. If you tell the epic story of Hercules, you can get a pretty impressive saga out of that.
If you crack that open and make a series that never ends and just keeps treading over the character again and again, then you pretty much devalue the epic saga that it is by departing from the epic portion much.

The only way to get a Vader film at this point is to throw Rebels into the garbage can, pissing off anyone who liked that, and rewrite that period of Vader's life into a film, and piss off a bunch of fans in the process, because I guarantee that whatever anyone on this planet comes up with, it won't be what everyone wants their Vader to be.

Part of what makes Vader so brilliant is wrapped up in what Lucas told Hamill when Hamill asked where the dialogue was of a soldier telling the audience who Vader was; like, "Oh no! It's Vader, the evil imperial dark master no one has ever survived", or whatever.

Lucas replied, basically, "There's no need. He wears all black, has a cape, and we give him mean music. Everyone will know."

And that's basically why a Vader story would always piss a bunch of people off and be a no-win situation.
Vader is basically whatever we make him in our heads, because he's the most basic archetype of evil - a faceless man in all black and a cape with magical powers who does really mean things to people without mercy.

All I see in the idea of a Vader anthology trilogy is an absolute Hindenburg of a disaster waiting to happen. There's too many opinions about Vader flying around to make it work right. It's like doing a Jesus movie. Don't. You can't win. No matter what you do, you'll just piss a s__t ton of people off, and they'll be absolutely crazy about it.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
