    Well fellow Jedi....and yes, you Sith also...Game of Thrones will air it's final season in about 11 weeks, which means two things;

    1. B&W are finished with the series, AND..
    2. The writing on their SW series is set to begin...maybe after a short vacation for a little R&R FIRST.

Now it's been said in this article that they'll be writing a trilogy which is removed from RJ's trilogy, AND the saga, as we know it.

I personally am expecting that these movies will be set in the Old Republic timeline...where there is something that a LOT of fans long for...Jedi and Sith...and LIGHTSABERS!

It seems to me that B&W would be a perfect fit to pen a trilogy about the lore of the Sith and Jedi of old, considering what I've seen in GoT. Not being a writer or even in the film business, I'd have no idea how long it'd take to perform this writing, or what avenue they'd take to do it, but I'm imagining that they'd outline an overall story arc to begin with, then decide where in the story to break it up into 3 individual acts, AND THEN begin writing each movie.

Now whether they'd write all of the trilogy movies first, or individually as filming progresses is an unknown.

Any thoughts about this process and how long it might take??

Never go into a project like this with a rigid plan. That's when mistakes happen and correcting them gets more difficult...
You have to have a general idea but also give yourself enough room to let the story grow and breathe on it's own.

That's where a lot of adaptations and planned trilogies struggle. They become rigid and slaves to past films rather than feeling organic or like good stories.

As for how long, it's safe to assume they have an outline already. They wouldn't have been green lit without one IMO. They likely were asked by Disney to submit a story idea and outline. So it's about fleshing it out from there.

I think it is important not to expect/wish for/demand anything in regards to what B&W's trilogy is going to be about. There is nothing -- except for lazy fan expectations -- to suggest that they are going to do a GoT SW-reskin. Both of them have made very different stuff to GoT in the past and there's nothing to suggest they are on-track ponies eager to do a can't-believe-it's-not-GoT project for the next decade or so. That said, it would be very interesting to see the Jedi/Sith wars explored on the big screen.

The short answer is: "That's impossible to say".

If I were to guestimate a longer answer, I'd say that B&W will probably take a pretty long vacation to get GoT out of their system and recharge their batteries before they start their SW project in earnest. I'd be very surprised if they start proper conceptualization and brainstorming (beyond random ideas in the night) until sometime after summer. Moreover, I think it is likely they'll take the rest of the year off, starting fresh in January 2020.

As for the writing process, we know they are guys who liked GoT because of the deep stories and long set-ups/pay-offs in Martin's work, so their writing is probably going to take some time. And, my guess is they are going to write several drafts of their entire trilogy before ever starting production on the first one; their show will probably not be a simple as the Skywalker saga, which is pretty straight forward, really (and there is nothing wrong with that at all).

B&W spent a little under a year to write the first draft of the GoT pilot, and then another short year to write the second one. This is not because they are slow, but because the pilot (i.e. the first episode) introduces and sets up everything, planting story-points that were to be payed off years down the line. Their SW efforts will probably be similar. Say they spend a year throwing together a first draft of the trilogy, and then another year to rewrite and hone that. With a working draft of the trilogy ready, they'll probably attack the first episode/film script and pour all their creativity and skill into that. Let's say that takes another year to do. During this time, pre-production will be well under way and production for the first movie will be more or less ready to go once the work draft is complete. So, to give an estimate timeline... and a quite optimistic one:

January 2020: B&W starts writing script drafts for their trilogy.
January 2021: 1st trilogy draft done; 2nd trilogy draft writing begins
January 2022: 2nd trilogy draft done; 1st episode script writing begins.
January 2023: 1st episode script done; production begins (unless a 1st episode script rewrite is in order, postponing everything 1 more year).
August 2023: Filming starts on B&W Trilogy, Episode 1
December 2024: B&W Trilogy, Episode 1 released to theaters

But remember, all of this is complete guesswork and takes nothing else into consideration, like other projects, personal time off, world events, Disney scheduling, longer production times (like for TLJ), production drama, whatever. You can probably add +1-3 years without overshooting one's estimates. (By comparison, it took George Lucas 4 years to write, make, and release ANH).

    absolutely agree with this.

i also think that as busy as they undoubtedly have been with GoT... i suspect they've been working on their SW project as well.

you don't just switch off from these things as a writer. whatever they discussed or submitted to Disney/LF will have started all sorts of juices flowing.

it would have been like putting a sugar covered jelly sweet in your mouth and not chewing it.. it can't be done.

i don't think they will write & lock down 3 movies (or however many they are making). I suspect they will complete a possible treatment for multiple movies, but will only complete the first ready for production. they will try and leave themselves paths to choose... that's how i'd do it with this franchise.

they could do it the Peter Jackson LoTR way and make them all at the same time.. but i'm not sure that's sensible.

They've been done with principal photography on GoT since summer I believe.
So they've had time to write Star Wars stuff...life of a writer means very few actual breaks.

I would love to see an Old Republic series! But just to throw another idea into the B&W mix, what about a Yuuzhan Vong trilogy? I'm getting close to finishing the New Jedi Order novels, which I've really enjoyed and I wouldn't mind seeing a re-vamped version of this story-line. Whether it is B&W doing it as a trilogy - which I think they could do well - or through some other Lucasfilm medium, a Vong-like invasion seems likely given the on-going direction of the new canon.

Oh boy.. you went and mentioned the ‘V’ word lol.
There are a lot of members that really didn’t enjoy that portion of the EU.

I’ve always seen the potential of someone taking the idea of the Vong and putting it on the big screen.
I’d love B&W to go this route, but as long as they come up with a new name for them.. just use the parts of the stories that they like.

    Great idea :)

I'm one of them that didn't care for the Vong SO MUCH that I had to FORCE myself to finish that arc of the EU.

It's almost like "Star Wars meets Alien"...which was too Sci-Fi for Star Wars, because someone thought "Yeah, let's throw some science fiction creations into SW...it'll be cool, you watch!"

    It wasn't...

    That's just me..

Well they killed off Chewbacca so naturally people are going to be pissed! Lol..

Yes, it would need to be completely re-vamped but there is a lot to work with there, especially for guys like B&W or Peter Jackson.

Never really got started on GOT, looking forward to getting the full series to see what I missed.
Yep I want to see the Yuuzhan Vong as well with all the trouble they caused the Skywalkers during a long war.

It seemed as if Benioff and Weiss were in a rush to finish "Game of Thrones" so that they could start on this new trilogy. I wonder if they will do the same to the trilogy, if they are offered another job before finishing it.

erm.. that's life - it's what happens in the real world, and certainly in the movie industry.

an open time line means an open budget.. and they won't get that.

HBO would have been pushing for them to finish GoT AND to spend less money. LF/Disney will push them to start/finish the new trilogy. If someone else wants their services after Star Wars.. they will push.

every TV show or movie made is rushed.. every single one of them.
    everyone is under pressure.

    life.

But HBO didn't push Benioff and Weiss to quickly finish "Game of Thrones" and spend less money. The network didn't. Benioff and Weiss were the ones who had insisted upon finishing the series and with less episodes ASAP. In fact, Benioff claimed that HBO would have been happy to keep the series going.

I don't think D&D rushed the ending. Their story had a beginning and an end with a gaping hole in the middle that Martin is still trying to figure out. So basically D&D had these huge set pieces to set up in the last season (the documentary does a good job of showing how big of a task it was to create it). If it were easy to create a story leading up to an end it Martin would have published the book on time years ago.

I'm fine with how Thrones ended, but it wasn't rushed. It's just missing story elements because they had to piece together an unfinished story.

I think they had rushed the ending. This doesn't mean that their Star Wars trilogy will be bad. But I found their handling of GOT's Season 7 questionable and Season 8 rushed.

I agree. It was way rushed to have the huge battle with the undead and the huge battle for King's Landing within a 3-episode timeframe. They should have wrapped up the White Walkers in Season 7, leaving Season 8 to focus on the Iron Throne. Spread things out more. I also didn't like the format change from 10 episodes per season for 6 years down to 7 episodes, then 6 (although I am not quite sure B&W controlled that, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt there).

Benioff and Weiss were responsible for the reduction in episodes. They were the ones who had convinced HBO to reduce the number of episodes in the first place. The network was willing to give them as much money and time to finish the story . . . and the pair, instead, rushed toward the ending.

Yeah I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't their decision but I certainly buy your statement that B&W were responsible for the reduction in episodes. It's clear they really wanted little more than to move on to the next phase of their creative careers. I can respect that but it's too bad the product had to suffer. Something tells me if HBO could do it all over again, I bet they'd jettison B&W for a new showrunner(s) who would be in far less of a rush.
