Still playing Elite Dangerous mostly but my girlfriend got me Stick Of Truth/Fracture But Whole for Christmas and I've been enjoying the first game. I've never laughed so hard at a game before.

Never played Lord of the Rings Online and told myself "let's give it a try". It's as if I'm playing new happy wheels with a different story but hey, I'm enjoying it so far.

    YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING~
a.k.a. The reason I haven't been on as much.

I got this for Christmas and started playing in mid-January at my friends' behest. Now it's all I EVER want to do. It's my new obsession.
    Other than that...
Got this when it came out, started to play it in November, but my controller isn't good enough and I think the used one I bought at GameStop has some stuck buttons (haven't tried it out with Spider-Man yet, but if it doesn't work, that's the LAST time I buy some used equipment at GameStop!).

I bought it, and all my friends who can are playing it (the same ones who got me into Persona), but I need to test out my new controller, and honestly all I want to do is keep playing Persona 5...But I WILL play this soon! Maybe in a couple of weeks...

I went on my first organized expedition in Elite Dangerous. Unlike other expeditions that head thousands of light years into the galaxy visiting countless star systems this one was a little different...

This expedition was to circumnavigate the moon of Kumay, circling the planet Apasam in the Chi Herculis system. http://buckyballracing.org.uk/kumay.html

So for the past month I've turned my space flight simulator (which I love) into a driving game (which I'm not really a big fan of) as I spent 30 days and 22 hours driving about 4000km around this moon over mountains, through valleys, over the icy poles, etc. I had a lot of fun but it was a trying at times. Hours and hours of driving but I saw lots of cool stuff.

So I actually haven't touched Kingdom Hearts 3, and probably won't until next year or earlier if I'm lucky. I think I've figured out a pattern of gaming - switch between JRPG's and regular RPG's at least until Pokémon comes out.

So last month I FINALLY beat Spider-Man, and it was great.

    Now I'm playing

After this ideally the pattern will be:

Spider-Man, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn are all WORTH IT. I'd add Persona 5 too, but they announced an expanded version called Persona 5R: The Royal a few weeks ago and it's set to come out in the West next year, so I'd recommend waiting for that.

Currently playing through Assassins Creed Odyssey finishing up side stuff. Been playing it since December, the DLC's have been pretty good IMO. Also been playing a lot of Guitar Hero again for some reason; mostly 3 and World Tour. Which is kinda weird since I haven't even thought about them since 5 came out 10 years ago (I was in high school still lol).

In anticipation of the new LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, I've been re-playing LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's a great game and the DLC is worth it.

The replay value of the LEGO games is high, it's very high.

I'm thinking of going through the campaign on Star Wars Battlefront II again.

It's sad there aren't more Star Wars games right now.

Oxygen Not Included. Basically a space-colony simulation along the lines of Rimworld and Fallout Shelter.

On several recent visits to a retro arcade I've been playing a lot of Discs Of Tron. I was happy to find that there was an XBOX Arcade port which is really great and I have been playing it a lot over the past couple of days. I'm not near the all-time high score but on my first day yesterday I got high score on the virtual machine and the weekly scoreboard then when the new week started today I got to the top again. There's only about 28 current players from the looks of it though so it's not going to my head too much, I only managed to get to #4 on the machine at Free Play but I've gotten a lot better being able to play at home and not drunk like I usually am at Free Play. They have a great selection of beer, what can I say. Plus there's no Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back machine calling my name from 5 feet away. The first time I've ever seen one of the latter, apparently they upgrade it with the TESB board from time to time and they surprised me on this last visit. I thought I was just going to be playing the regular game and suddenly it comes on, I've always wanted to play it in the arcade and not just as an extra on my Rogue Squadron III disc.

Anyway, love the Tron game but playing at home I really miss those snazzy controls...

Finished the above over the weekend. Now back to Pokémon Shield, and then maybe I can finish Horizon Zero Dawn over the holidays. And then I'll start the new year with Witcher 3!

Also, my review of Jedi Fallen Order 8/10 at most. The combat was solid and streamlined, but I'm not a giant fan of Sekiro or Dark Souls, so I wasn't expecting this game to be the Star Wars version of them. Cal let you feel like a Jedi Padawan in true fashion - strong enough to feel like a god over stormtroopers most of the time, weak enough to worry about stronger enemies; and this game really made the Inquisitors actually a THREAT - something Rebels (due to starting with the strongest) and Darth Vader's comic couldn't do (because they were explaining the origin more than anything).

As for the characters themselves, I liked Cal and Greez well enough. They were pretty plain, but good. The true stars were the ladies. Cere was a solid mentor, and only got better as the game went along. I loved seeing her rise through her brokenness and finally fight her demons. The Second Sister was easily the best Star Wars villain I've seen in a long, long while. She was personal enough to feel important, strong enough to be scary, and menacing enough that I both dreaded and eagerly awaited fighting her. She played Cal like a fiddle at nearly every turn, and made it look cool. But Merrin is by far the best. It's just sad we don't get a lot of screen time with her.

That leads me to my biggest complaint (and not one limited to this game) - the story feels rushed. Cal's bonds with Cere and Greez happen way too fast, especially when most of the game takes place outside of their ship. To me it felt like they bonded over practically nothing in maybe a few day's time. All the talk about eating together and you might see it twice. It's just...in other sci-fi/space opera games like Mass Effect or Fallout (or even Horizon: Zero Dawn), there was a lot more time to forge a bond, and that bond felt real. I guess what I'm saying is that I would have either preferred this game to be longer with a few more companions and cutscenes to bond the characters, or turn the characters into companions so they actually join you on missions and have dialogue there (ala Bioware games...including KOTOR). Or maybe an actual hub world instead of a trophy collection via plants and a "fast travel" ship.

Overall I really had fun in the world of this game, and it was the Star Wars shot in the veins I needed to get pumped for TROS, but for the story I wanted more. The bright side is that EA is improving with every Star Wars game, and this one hasn't been inundated with controversy, so we might actually get a sequel!

Since I'm likely not going to start and play any new games this year, here's my list of the top games I played in 2019.

    1. [IMG]

Ah, Persona Emblem*. This game easily was my favorite game of the year. It's one of the few games I've ever played where I finished it and immediately started up a new file (others include Mass Effect 2, Persona 5, and Fire Emblem Awakening). But what made FE3H the top game? Phenomenal voice acting, an engaging story, great music, a memorable cast, style, and refined gameplay. I hesitate to say this game reinvented or reinvigorated the FE franchise, but it did everything right when it needed to, and showed fans that it cares. Three Houses is the culmination of nearly every game before it, refined to perfection. (Now, if only it had a larger selection of maps!)

    9.5/10

    1. [IMG]

Fire Emblem might be my favorite game I played this year, but Persona 5 was far and away the best and most influential. Stunning visuals, Kick-Butt soundtrack, challenging but rewarding gameplay, awesome characters, phenomenal voice acting, and a great setting...just looking at the cover art nearly makes me want to start up another game! Persona 5 will go down in the list of my top tier games. I hope The Royal lives up to the OG. YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING!!!

    10/10.

    3. [IMG]

Good superhero games are rare. Great ones are even rarer. Luckily, this one is great. It truly makes you feel like Spider-Man. With new and old characters alike, this is a solid, fun entry into Spider-Man's mythos. I hope they make a sequel...preferably one that's a launch title for the PS5.

    9.5/10

    3. [IMG]

This one's kind of a cheat since I haven't officially finished it yet...but it's worth being here. When I was playing this, all I could think of was "THIS IS WHO REY NEEDS TO BE!" But that's an aside. Fun, interesting gameplay, cool characters that gain depth as the story goes on, and a fascinating premise. I'm sure I'll be sad when the game ends, but I can't wait to beat it.

    9/10

    5. [IMG]

Solid gameplay, cool new characters, and a great blend of expanding the world and keeping things familiar. This game is the best Star Wars game in a LONG time, and while I don't really feel like the story is worth the price (a little too short for my liking, especially given how close the characters seem to bond over such a short amount of time. But that's Star Wars for you), but I definitely recommend picking it up.

    8/10

    Honorable Mentions:

Disgaea 5. I enjoyed what I've played so far, but I haven't really gotten that far...maybe next year?

Valkyria Chronicles 4. This one would have been higher on the list, and I might have even finished playing it HAD THE MISSIONS NOT BEEN RANKED. I'm not a perfectionist in real life, but I HATE when games have rankings and then reward you based on those rankings because I feel pressure to get the best ranking. It sucks and honestly takes my enjoyment away. Spending 2-3 hours doing a 30 minute mission isn't worth the stress. So I'll probably watch someone 100% the game online, and that'll be fine.

Pokémon Shield. Maybe I'm a bad fan, but I'm enjoying the game so far. I like talking about it with my friends and roleplaying my way through the game. Is it hard? Not at all. Are the routes to short? Absolutely. And don't I feel like I'm on an adventure.** It's more of a...field trip. But I'm enjoying most of the new Pokémon and the Wild Area is pretty cool. This is a good game, which stinks because Pokémon played it safe while other major Nintendo franchises came to the switch big and bold. But maybe they'll try something new next time.

The Outer Worlds. My brother-in-law got to the final level over Thanksgiving break. And then the game crashed and the save file was corrupted. So we have no idea what happened or how to fix it at the moment and won't get to try until Christmas. I'm mad at the game for him.

*A good amount of the voice actors in Persona 5 are also in Three Houses! Morgana is Sothis; (Best Girl) Makoto is Rhea; Haru is (Best Girl) Marianne; and The Royal's new character Kasumi being Catherine. In the Japanese version, Lysithea and Futaba have the same V.A.; and special shoutout to Yusuke's VA Matt Mercer for voicing Chrom and then Ryoma AND Shigure in Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates. Not to mention that the colors of the houses resonate with the three latest main Persona games: Red for revolution and justice, Yellow/Golden for truth and bonds, and Blue for ideals (I think. I haven't played P3 but I've heard it matches with Azure Moon). Next you've got the crests relating to the Major Arcana in the Tarot. And a (*cough-high school-cough*) military academy that serves as the hub world and you have monthly missions on a calendar that takes up a school year...yeah...Persona Emblem.

**As I'm slowly re-playing Silver and watching Chuggaaconroy's old Fire Red Let's Play, I'm realizing that previous games made it logistically troublesome (or straight up impossible) to return home for the first few badges. This idea of "you can't go home again/it's not worth the effort" made the regions feel larger as well as facilitate the feeling you're on an adventure. Sw/Sh, with the ability to travel back to any city you've already visiting accessible even before the first gym, doesn't have that.
