An acting nomination is the only award Joker should receive.

Well, we don't know what happened in that meeting back in May. But something did. Why do I say that? They kept mentioning a D&D trilogy, then it seemed it became "a film." Like in June or so it seemed like there was some backtracking. I seem to also remember there was a story in July/August about a screenwriter being brought in for the D&D film, but I could be crazy. Then you get the Netflix announcement and finally in October we have Rian Johnson saying "if" then not "if" and D&D being let go. Oh, and Kevin Fiege has come in during all of this.

So what does it all mean? Honestly, I have NO FREAKIN CLUE!!! LOL Except that it does appear change is in the air. I can't be sure, and I have no sources, but I think Iger might be shuffling things and perhaps, PERHAPS, bringing in KF as a sort of transitionary figure. Maybe KK is gonna bow out after IX, having overseen "phase 1" of Disney Star Wars. KF comes in as a transitionary figure to bridge the gap from phase 1 to 2? I think things will become clearer in the first 6 months of 2020.

This is a hard one. Having not seen the film, I can't say anything about it. I will say the first trailer I thought was bad, but the second one was much improved. But as always there will be some INTENSE competition. Martin, Quentin, heck Joker even. Heck Ed Norton's new film, Motherless Brooklyn looks darned good. So who the hell knows? I have to say, I thought Joker was fantastic. A very dark film that had me thinking about it several days after I saw it. The acting was top notch and I thought the writing was as well.

The one thing I think gets sometimes downplayed is the effort put into promoting a film by the studio. Netflix has promoted the hell out of their films lately, and I expect they will pull out all the stops for Martin. Either way, award season should be interesting this year.

Why are those other directors ahead of Rian Johnson. Todd Phillips directed a film that got mixed critic reviews. I love Taika and want to see Jo Jo Rabbit, but it isnt a huge critical success. Isnt it just as valid or more valid that they need to contend with Rian Johnson taking a nomination away from them? Even Tarantino isnt one of those automatic nominations.

And I think that's being generous considering what we haven't even seen yet.

I could see his Star Wars fate being tied to Kennedy's. If someone else comes in, it may not even be personal, it just may be they would want to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. It just would seem odd for her to still be there and his films not happening since we know they like each other but who knows. Like you said we don't know everything that goes on.

The thing to remember is the people that vote for the Oscars are film industry people and not critics. That's why you had a very vocal contingent of outsiders (including myself frankly) saying Green Book would not make a very good Best Picture, and it ended up winning a whole bunch of awards including Best Picture.

I get the sense that they place emphasis on what gets nominated on how "important" they think a movie is but there is also a little bit of groupthink that goes on in terms of them saying, "Well it's won a bunch other awards (Palme D'Or, Venice Golden Lion, TIFF Audience, etc), I want to be seen as going with the thing that others think is worthy of praise too." The other thing is they are in the middle of a transition from a bunch of older, frankly white people to a more diverse younger crowd and those two sides are still battling it out as to what "important" means. That being said I think Green Book is very much a older crowd pick.

I haven't seen Knives Out myself, but I think it will be a lot of fun and a good time at the movies but I'm just not sure they will see it as a prestige film, in the way they will see the others. It's a weird thing to define what an "Oscar film" is because it's not a popularity contest, otherwise Avengers would be the frontrunner, but yet it does involve some element of being popular among prestige films.

Green Book won because it's a very safe movie that is about race relations. Like Driving Miss Daisy.

Hi. New here. I've written a detailed outline of episode 10. My idea for the storyline. I just want to know where to post it? I did try my best to contact Disney to see if they'll consider it but as it's an unsolicited submission it's 99.9 percent impossible they'll consider it. Shall I post it in the fan section?

All right, I assume this is a joke but I'll bite :) What previous experience do you have writing multi-million $ budget, genre heavy, action drama, blockbuster films? Or any writing at all, really? If you're a nobody writer with zero experience or merits, like all the rest of us, then your chances of Disney/LFL picking up your unsolicited outline is exactly 0%. Your chances rises somewhat if you're backed by major industry figures, like say... Spielberg or Kennedy, but if you were that you would certainly not come here asking. I absolutely DO admire your optimism, though! :D

By the way, Fan Fiction goes here: https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet.com/index.php?forums/fan-fiction.70/

PS: I'd like to come back to this post and emphasize that I mean no harm or criticism in my reply. Writing is awesome, and ambition even more so, and if the question was not a joke then I do appologize for any snarkiness :)

I dont know what point you are trying to make. I know who is in the Academy I still dont see how that puts RJ 2nd fiddle to some of the names that have been listed who created less critically acclaimed films.

What I'm saying is what the critics are saying has basically no effect on what the Academy ultimately decides. So in spite of Jojo & Joker being divisive among critics, they have a feeling of "importance" (and they've already won major awards), that I'm just not sure KO has. I mean I seem to remember there was one year a film had 30% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and it still got nominated for Best Picture. So if it ends up that RJ & the film make the cut for Director & Picture, great, but given what I think they're looking for in an "Oscar film" I don't think KO is it, even though, I think it looks awesome and can't wait to see it.

He actually used some of the TLJ discourse for inspiration on Knives Out...

Yeah, I've seen that. Funny after I saw the first trailer for Knives Out I thought Chris Evans was awful. I wouldn't have done this, but that's just me.

He directed someone's else work in Breaking Bad and it's widely considered one of the greatest TV show episodes ever. Imagine people wanting to kick David Filoni to the curb after the terribly received Clone Wars film. Some of y'all need to relax with your armchair film advice.

Rian Johnson is the only Star Wars director in the Disney era to write and direct a Star Wars film by himself. Everyone one else has either been fired, replaced, or needed help writing their film. He was able to do this without any production drama and with the approval of Disney and Lucasfilm. By all accounts he's still loved by Lucasfilm. If you didn't like the film that's perfectly fine, but let's quit pretending he didn't make a film that wasn't approved and loved by Disney/Lucasfilm. If he didn't they would have replaced him.

Not much that we haven't heard before but some nice quotes including, "Everything's the best, you're working on a Star Wars movie, there's nothing bad about it". Also Mando spoilers, I guess?

IndieWire article about Rian Johnson's career so far with some Star Wars information...

As for what’s next in Johnson’s upcoming “Star Wars” films, he said he’s still cooking up ideas for the story, which will reset the narrative now that the Skywalker Saga is ending with this December’s “The Rise of Skywalker” from director J.J. Abrams.

“I’m poking around and trying to find stuff. When I’m around at Lucasfilm, I see things. I visited the set of ‘Mandalorian.’ The producer I was with was like, you know, don’t say a Maclunkey a word. With the creators, you’re doing stuff and feel like everyone’s sharing their vibes and they’re open about stuff. It doesn’t feel like there are little locked rooms you can’t go into. I run into Dave Filoni in the hallways and we talk about what we’re working on,” Johnson said.
