Looks like he loved the idea though. Lots of conversations and coordination between film makers.

    This. THIS.

This would explain so much, and tie everything together. It would explain Ben falling to the dark side. It would explain Rey. It would explain why all of our heroes are depressed in the ST. It would be perfect.

Another option would be Ben never knew he had a sister, because she was sent away/hidden when Ben started getting scary. Luke/Leia saw visions of bro and sister fighting, so they attempt to save them both by hiding Rey. Something terrible happens, and she is thought dead.

Of course, their actions end up fulfilling the vision of them fighting. Self-fulfilling prophecy and mis-interpreted visions have kind of been a theme of the trilogy- well, TLJ at least.

Unfortunately, i think she will be a Palp because JJ thinks he's being clever. When Rey Palp is actually terribly lazy and nonsensical.

Meh he isn't going to trash it in public cmon.

Are there people who still think this trilogy was planned out? lol lol lol

I've seen a few unconfirmed gossip reports on a messageboard and twitter that Rey remembers her father saying 'my ray' and/or 'little ray' in that new Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga book.

Anybody know? I've actually looked in a few bookstores for this book to look at but none of them had it and Google Books doesn't have a scan either available. Any help to confirm/debunk this would be appreciated.

Ki Adi Moonshine (gossip monger): "Also in the book the only thing Rey remembers is her father calling her 'my RAY'...the only thing from her childhood. Rey, again as I've said, is not her birth name." (October 19, 2019)

While these folks could be wrong or correct, what isn't wrong is that this has been published:

Ultimate Star Wars New Edition: The Definitive Guide to the Star Wars Universe: "Abandoned: A tiny Rey watches helplessly as a starship pulls away, marooning her on the unfamiliar world of Jakku." (October 4, 2019) (SW:TROS-era)

Star Wars: Before The Awakening (Greg Rucka): "On Jakku, a young woman who calls herself REY struggles to live in an isolation necessary for her own survival." (SW:TFA-era)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - A Junior Novel (Michael Kogge): "'Beebee-Ate? Okay. Hello, Beebee-Ate. My name is Rey.' The droid inquired if she had a family name. 'No, just Rey.'" (SW:TFA-era)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - A Junior Novel (Michael Kogge): "Once there was a girl who called herself Rey. [...] Once there was a man who was born with the name Luke Skywalker." (SW:TFA-era)

Ben's parents (Han and Leia) had nicknames for Ben.

Yes. The major beats and outcomes of the protagonists were planned out. How they got there was up to the film makers.

haha, wait are you being serious or sarcastic?

They only 'planned out' the trilogy for the good guys? That's a joke, right?

You guys can like the ST all you want, but it is pretty clear that the trilogy was not thought out. Everyone from Rian to Colin to even JJ (when you remember everything he has said) has confirmed it.

Who cares at this point? If it was planned out would it make people who hate it like it? It's just a crutch or a some silly justification to like or dislike something purely subjective.

George Lucus didn't have a plan the entire OT. He made changes as he went along. Just like this trilogy. There were some loose concepts and they let the creatives work with it.

I like the idea of a childhood trauma with Ben Solo, but that ship sailed in the last film. Without Fisher unable to communicate this theory to Rey it's a useless to the story. With Palpatine in this film the backstory it gonna have to be centered on how he fits into the film. A connection to Rey makes sense.

"Rey, your mom is Leia, but she can't tell you. Also, your Dad died and he didn't even know who you were. Lastly, you had a crush on your brother."

    YAY!

Why was that Lor San Tekka on Jakku? Seems a serious coincidence that nobody Rey and Lor San Tekka on the same planet among millions and the Falcon too!

This is dumb. A franchise worth billions... a huge story group, theme parks, toys... And you think it wasn't thought out. They had an outline of where they wanted to end up and what the character's arcs were. Adam Driver wouldn't even take the role until he heard what the plan was for his character in the trilogy.

    So no it wasn't sarcasm.

Could tie into the movie with Kylo Ren and Rey.

    Vader Immortal Episode 3 transcript:

Mustafarian Priestess: "[Darth Vader is] draining my life force [with the Aeon Engine]...you must stop him before he drains the vitality of every being on this planet. I have taken you as far as I can but you must finish this alone. Reach inside yourself, find the strength, and remember: Fate chose you for a reason."

    Darth Vader kneels before Padme.

Padme (artifact conduit): "Anakin...all I want is your love...(unintelligble)"

Darth Vader: "Padme...you will be mine again. If the energies of this world are not enough...there are countless others."

Darth Vader (to player): "Can you feel it? Your own life force is heading away. Where your ancestor [Corvax] failed, I will succeed."

Darth Vader (to player): "Look upon the engine. You see...your ancestor's destiny is fulfilled."

Padme: "Stop! Come back! I love you!"

Darth Vader (to player): "She was almost within reach! Now she is lost to me again! BECAUSE OF YOU!!! ARRRRRR!"

Corvax husband ghost: "[...] Vader thinks his willpower can achieve what lady Corvax could not. Instead he will tear this world apart trying to resurrect shadows. The Aeon Engine must be destroyed."

Then the player destroys it with a lightsaber while Vader is frozen.

This may have been stated before (steered clear of spoilers, been away from the forum for a while) but I think she could be a clone created by Palps using Anakin's DNA. This would make her a Skywalker (sort of), explain the many 'Reys' (clones) in the cave scene in TLJ, her formidable abilities and tie her into the overall Skywalker/chosen one saga.

Maybe she was 'found/abducted' by one of our OT characters somewhere in between ep6 and 7. She could have been Leia's adopted daughter, raised alongside young Ben for a while. Realising her potential in the force (and the danger she's in if she would be turned by Snoke just like Ben was) they chose to hide her on Jakku where, from a distance, she is watched over by Lor San Tekka (just like Obi Wan kept an eye on Luke). Ben knows of her force powers, both envies and fears them. He sees her as a rival to the 'throne'. That's why he reacts so agressively to the 'there was a girl' report in ep7. He senses his adopted sister has been found and does everything he can to hide the truth from her. This is why he says she comes from nothing (sort of true since there was no biological father so to speak) in ep8.

And if she's a clone maybe Palpatine's new Sith troopers (if they are at his command) are also Rey clones. Could be a shocking moment when one of them raises her helmet revealing a 'Rey' to the young heroine. Maybe that's where 'dark Rey' comes from as well.

Not long now before all is revealed.

Daisy Ridley: “Oh, my God. I know [Rey’s parents is a big talking point]. Honestly, the first time around I was like, ‘What is the big deal about the parents?’ And now, I get it more.” “But again now it’s because the story’s gone in a slightly different way. That again, it’s all retrospective because you can fill in the blanks that you didn’t even know. I’m like, I get it now, but at the time I thought, ‘I really don’t understand it.'” “And then I thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s like always been a Star Wars thing,’ and I guess it’s because Mark [Hamill] talked about in [The] Empire Strikes Back when Vader says, ‘I’m your father.’ And he said that everyone – I think it just came out and then there was a summer break or something, and no one believed it was true. Nobody. Because obviously there were breaks between the films, nobody believed it was true.” “[Darth Vader’s ‘father’ reveal to Luke is one] of the biggest moments in cinematic history.” “Lineage [is important, but] you can choose your family.” “So, I was one of the few that I was like, ‘Well, I get why you’d want to know who your parents are,’ but also, I was always interested in the relationships Rey was making herself, as an adult. But yeah, it’s always been curious to me. I don’t know.” (December 6, 2019)

According to a reviewer on Amazon in their review they state. "There are no hints to The Rise of Skywalker."

So I'm gonna assume there's nothing about Rey's memory about her father. Also there are only three reviews.

    J. J. Abrams: “I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories. I’m not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn’s past, about Poe’s past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.” “We went into this movie very much in the mindset that this has to be conclusive. It has to. You have to get some answers. You have to learn some things.” “For me personally, the fun of it is the excitement of what comes next, what comes down the line. It makes beginnings tantalizing and exciting because hopefully the audience will feel the same feeling you have, which is, Ooh, I think I know where this is going. Let’s see how we get there.” “Endings are very difficult because they need to take everything that’s come before, in this case eight films prior, and draw it to a close. So I wanted to make sure in addition to the central story, the main character or characters, I wanted to make sure that you felt that when you were done with this film, you felt like you had some more insight into all of them. That was really important to us.” (December 2, 2019) (archive)

    J. J. Abrams: “[Rey and Kylo Ren are] stronger, but because each is stronger, so is their adversary. [The characters are] connected in this profound way, drawn to each other, curious about each other, knowledgeable about each other. They also are, by definition, working on opposite sides of things. And so the dichotomy of those characters is the thing that, for me, is most fascinating.” “I look back at what Daisy [Ridley] did in The Force Awakens, and I thought her work was exceptional. She’s so damn talented. But I look at what she’s done in this film, and I’m so awestruck by her maturity and her nuance and the power that she brought to this part. As challenging as I knew this movie was going to be for me as a director, I also knew it was going to be extraordinarily challenging for her. And she exceeded my wildest dreams of what she might do.” “Adam [Driver], as well, goes to a far deeper, more interesting, compelling, and subtle place with his character. When we met Kylo, he was almost like a bit of an adolescent. He would sort of rage. He aspired to a kind of power and control, but he was out of control. [In The Rise of Skywalker he’s] much more centered, no less broken, but far more controlled. Having assumed the position of Supreme Leader, he comes to the story a much more mature figure while still, in his own way, raging.” “If you compare [Kylo] with Rey, they both have this kind of confidence in their position, and yet the stakes have only grown greater. The challenge has only grown more significant. They’re both in brand-new and yet similar situations.” “No, [there’s no East Asian ‘Red Thread of Fate’ closely connecting Rey and Kylo as destined lovers as some fans have speculated]. That is not something that we incorporated.” (December 3, 2019)

Kathleen Kennedy: "It was important to let them really spend time with understanding what this [final movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker] was and all the nuances of what the mysteries were that were being revealed. So I think you’ll find when you see the movie, it was a very apt title." (December 9, 2019)

Adam Driver: “I think [the title Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker] plays perfectly into what happens in the movie. The title was very much an on-going conversation that was, you know, happening with the core team but it was kind of…what is…I’m almost glad that it came late because you kind of had to make it and figure out what it is that you made. And I think that [the title’s] really appropriate.” “I don’t want to say if it’s [related to my character]. Maybe [that I’m the only Skywalker at this point]. (smiles) Maybe, yeah. Yeah, I don’t know if it’s in relationship to…I think it’s…it’s hard to explain without using the movie [itself]…that how well [the title] fits in.” (December 6, 2019)

Q: J. J....I remember when Force Awakens came out I saw an interview with you and you said the real hook to get you to want to do this project was the question, 'Where has Luke Skywalker been?' Is there a similar kind of hook that got you into The Rise of Skywalker?
    J. J. Abrams:
Well it was...it was really because when Kathy Kennedy called to ask if I'd come on to do this, I knew it wasn't about beginning as it was with Force Awakens - beginning a new trilogy, introducing new characters. The thing that really grabbed me with Force Awakens was this idea there was this young woman out there who existed in a world where the films that we all knew was the history of the galaxy she was in, and the big question for her was, 'Is Luke Skywalker more than a myth? Could he actually be someone who existed?' In this one I would say because she clearly is discovering how powerful she is with the Force - Last Jedi clearly is about her training, starting - I guess the question in this is like what is all that training for? And what is she really up against? And that is a sort of personal and professional question for her and I think that the movie it very much plays out not just her own inevitability but if you look at all nine films I'd like to think that there is an inevitability there as well. (December 10, 2019)

Q: You bring up Adam Driver and Kylo Ren: talk about family and who's your daddy...his parents are heroes! Han Solo and Princess Leia and yet his spiritual father is [Darth Vader].
    J. J. Abrams: That's it. Yes. His grandfather.
    Q: So talk about complicated!
J.J.A.: I think it's...look the Skywalker Saga is and has always been a family story.
Q: Yeah but a really dysfunctional family. (laughs)
J.J.A.: Yeah but a family story. I mean seriously that's just the way...but no I do think that that complexity you talked about...that thing that of the question of if the son and Han and Leia can be turned to the dark side - can any of us? What is it to be the kid of these heroes? And we've all seen people who are children of certain people who go dark - the idea of being drawn to, attracted to this power, this purpose that you can never be the thing your parents were. 'What should I be?' - turning against them - I think there's more of that in the real world than we might think or might even be aware of, but I...
Q: I think we're all aware of it. That's why therapy is so popular!
J.J.A.: That's it! That's true. But I feel like the story for Rey - her connection with Kylo Ren - that really is at the heart of the emotional story in this movie and the thing's your talking about are very much the things that the movie talks about.

    J. J. Abrams:The character of Leia is really, in a way, the heart of this story. We realized we could not possibly tell the end of these nine films without Leia.” “We realized that we had footage from Episode VII, and we could use it in a new way.” (August 24, 2019) (archive)
