Twitter/Internet Buzz for Episode IX

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere yet. I'm browsing threads less to avoid spoilers. I got a good laugh out of it.

Screw twitter

 

Social media in general. Whatever minute goodness it may have, with social media "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy".

 

Twitter is FAKE if you try to get a pulse on American culture from Twitter, you are going to get a DISTORTED, FAKE perception...

"And a recent study by Morten Bay, a University of Southern California digital media researcher, revealed that over 50 percent of the venom directed on Twitter at Rian Johnson, director of “The Last Jedi,” came from the same sources as Russian election meddling.

Using the analytical tools that other technologists deployed to uncover Russian influence during the 2016 election, Mr. Bay found that “bots, trolls/sock puppets or political activists” were using the “Star Wars” debate “to propagate political messages supporting extreme right-wing causes and the discrimination of gender, race or sexuality” and that “a number of these users appear to be Russian trolls.” So it seems that it was political operatives, not fans, who were denigrating the movie and fomenting some of the virulent racism and misogyny against its cast."

Honestly just like people laugh at Pet Rocks from 1972, or flared pants and giant lapels from 1975, or hair bands from 1988, or why people thought "Diffrent Strokes" was "good" entertainment in 1981, or that Disney thought "Song of the South" was perfectly adorable parable to make a movie out of in the early 60's, I think we're all going to look at the 10's as the decade we all thought Twitter was real, instead of a cesspool of fake accounts, sock puppets, adolescent rage and foreign goverments actively working to divide American culture in half.

As a programmer, let me tell you, it is DEAD SIMPLE to create hundreds of sock puppets, troll accounts, bots and rage spoofing on Twitter. Like just a few lousy lines of code is all it takes. The whole damn platform is designed to amplify extreme, divisive, toxic opinion, with ease and with the illusion that hundreds and hundreds of "people" agree with your dissonant, aggressive, toxic opinions.

We are all allowed to hate, love, like or be indifferent to various Star Wars products.

But for as much as I disliked Episode IX and I did, still have vastly more affection for Star Wars, than I'll ever have for Twitter and Facebook. Two reckless companies, with ABUSIVE policies about data sharing, data manipulation and amplifying and jagged, fake information. All reason and logic on these platforms gets EVISCERATED with propaganda and 1 person making themselves look like 500 people via a little python scripting and the very API tools these platforms provide.

Never, ever let Twitter/Facebook tell you what to think. That's their business model, that's how they ruin everything, by getting all of us to believe that screaming, morons like Mike Zeroh represent the Star Wars community as a whole.

Go to a Star Wars convention and meet real people who love Star Wars, they are nothing like Mike Zeroh and his toxic soup of boy rage.

 

Loving the #ThankYouRianJohnson hashtag! Perhaps this belongs in the TLJ section, but the reason the hashtag even exists is mostly due to TROS so...
