Rogue One was my least favorite (of the Disney era) upon first viewing, but that's largely because the first third is such a mess, so it made a bad first impression. When I watched it again, the first third didn't bother me as much because I knew it would get better.

Ranking these films is always tough for me because so much of it depends on my mood. And even when I really like a film, if I've seen it too often, it's likely to slip in my ranking just because I'm tired of it. For example, ANH is obviously a good movie, but I haven't even watched in several years because I've just gotten tired of it. So I'll just say I like all of the recent SW movies, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and I'm just glad that we have 5 enjoyable new films in the franchise, when I thought we wouldn't be getting any new films after ROTS.

I liked R1 very much. The "sadly" part is due to my disappointment in the overall quality of Disney SW.

The most "Unlike" any other SW movie , yet still great in its own right.

Mission above all else, the grittiest, most self-sacrifice, most courageous scenes of any SW movie.

A nod to the Rebel Special Forces....the infantry....

Rogue One beats the ever-loving crap out of all the other Disney Star Wars stuff. A woman who actually has a history of being rebellious and has a father who is intertwined with The Empire begrudgingly is infinitely more interesting than a nobody who just happens to be the most perfect force-user in the history of the galaxy.

I was really surprised just how uncompromising R1 was, didn't expect that at all.
It definately showed Star Wars in a new Light (at least on the big Screen)...grittier, less friendly.
Would rate it slightly above TFA as the best Disney-Era Star Wars Movie :)

I wouldn't say it is THE BEST of all of the Star Wars films, but I will say it is easily the best of the Disney created Star Wars films. It was a nice change of pace, having a non Jedi-centric story to tell, even if The Force was still involved, as it always is. It raised the stakes and made the characters more relatable, I feel. It also gave us yet another droid to fall in love with, even if fate yanked them away in the end. Speaking of end, I should not have been surprised by it, but it still came as a shock, even though it tied up any loose ends created by the film itself.

No. I actually walked out on RO. It was a boring slog and chore to watch. Nothing consequential happened, I couldn't find myself to care about the characters and all I remember was that the lead actress attended Oxford. It just came across as another re-fried version of the I ended up just leaving after 90 minutes. It was nothing but another re-fried film about the French Resistance taking down the Nazi's.
One could argue the same thing about the plot of the ST. But at least they compensated for that through the exploration of the characters and their growth and maturity and the emotional journey.

It’s certainly one of my favourite but as good as it is & too me it’s a really god Star Wars Film. What will always make this film special is the fact it was the first film I got to see in the cinema after getting out of hospital. So yes from a purely emotional POV this is probably my favourite SW film from Disney era.

Rogue One belongs in both Tier 2 (aka "I rarely-to-never put it on, but when it's on I thoroughly enjoy the ever-loving stuffing out of it") AND Tier 3 (aka "I actively avoid marathon re-watches because of these movies) for me.

It's a beautiful movie, but it's not the most beautiful in my opinion. It's an incredibly tense movie, but not the most tense for me. It doesn't have the magic that TFA had, nor the tired, "I want to get hyped for this but it's really hard" struggle that TROS had.

I'd like this movie more, but the soundtrack is easily the worst out of any era. I physically cringe during the soundtrack; it sounds like poorly written fanfiction in audio form, or a bootleg version of the what previous Star Wars soundtracks have been. And this isn't a knock on Michael Giacchino at all! I LOVE most of the scores I've heard from the man, and I'm aware of the time crunch he had on this one. But man, does it not. work. for me...
And y'all, the soundtrack matters to me. It's as much of a character in the movie as the role the actors have, especially in a Star Wars movie. If I'm taken out of the movie by an off-sounding soundtrack every 15-20 minutes, I'm not going to have a good time, and I'm not going to want to come back.

Other than that...I find many of the Disney Era Star Wars movies to work best in pairs. Rogue One is no exception. Rogue One is a movie utterly focused on the plot and is paired best with TFA, a movie entirely focused on the characters.*

But to call it the best...? That's going to be a no for me. The best of the Disney era in my opinion are TFA, Solo, and TLJ, in that order. And then Rogue One.

*That's not to say that there wasn't a plot element in TFA or that the characters weren't developed in RO.

Edit: But the Death Troopers are DOOOOOPEEE

I always kind of balk at the idea of including movies like Clone Wars, Rogue One and Solo in the official rankings of Star Wars movies. They're not built like a Star Wars film, they're built to be something else entirely and comparing it to the other movies in a franchise that is episodic is kind of a discredit to what either is creating.

That said, just comparing movies to others? I think Rogue One is an absolutely fantastic film, definitely in the ranks of my favorite films ever. I adore the direction it went and the story it told, and if for some reason we were including it in my favorite Star Wars movies ever, it would be second best behind Empire. But again, I think it discredits both Rogue One and I-IX to include it there, because again, both are attempting to accomplish different things and both are built entirely within the span of different vaccuums.
