I love the dramatic foreshadowing in it.

One common complaint I hear about TPM is about how it made Vader into a little kid.

Now, hear me out: personally, I don't think Vader needed an origins story. But since we were getting the prequels, that was kind the point of them.
And if Vader is going to have an origins story, I'd rather see his fall from grace than always have been dark.

In fact, if anything, that's my biggest problem with Anakin in AotC- I think he falls too hard, too fast. Seeing his doubts in the Jedi via his frustrations with their views on intimacy was more than enough for that film. The Tusken Raider slaughter scene should've been saved for ROTS, where he commits a war crime of some sort (which we technically got any, thanks to Dooku). It just pushed Anakin to the Vader side way too fast, before bringing him all the way back to sarcastic, happy go lucky quipping Jedi by the end of the film's bombastic conclusion.

It's great, set up the story perfectly, wow this kid becomes Vader..... plus it just looks so cool!!!

I like your post and I see your points, but I think differently in a few areas.

I actually think once Vader became Lukes Father it was ripe for an origin story. If he was just an evil guy in a mask throughout the whole trilogy then I would see your point(for example I never needed Bobba Fett's origins), but they made Vader a hero and I remember watching the Orignal films and been desperate to know how Anakin became Vader so I was delighted when the prequels where announced!

I also don't agree that the Tusken Raiders scene should have been saved for Revenge of the SIth, while I love that film one of my issues with it is how quickly they turn Anakin to the Dark side, one second he just wants to save Padme the next he is killing younglings, having the Tusken Raiders scene in Attack of the clones for me offsets this a bit, as it shows he been capable of this for a number of years. If anything I think they should have gone further back and had Anakin as more of a troubled character in the Phantom Menace instead of the kid with a heart of gold that we did get.

My main issue with the whole Vader as a kid thing was simply Jake Lloyd, I don't want to be mean to the guy because he was only a kid, but he really can't act! and it was exaggerated by the dialogue, I'm a prequels fan, but even I get really annoyed by the whole sequence of Anakin accidentally blowing up the droid command ship especially the dialogue.

If only they had cast Annakin a few years older in the Phantom Menace so the actor was more Natalie Portman's Age, you could have got a more consistent actor and it would have made more sense with the whole too old to train arc. But then I guess we wouldn't have got this awesome poster, as I don't think it would have been as powerful if you replaced a child for a teenager.

I never was clear on this...what exactly was the age problem?
That she doesn't age as dramatically as he does, or that she's much older?

    Cheers,

Portman is 7 years older than Loyd. Even for people in their 20s, that's a bit of a gap. Not unknown before, but it's a gap still.

Plus, even when we see huge age gap romances on film, it's typically the guy that's older. As unfortunate as that stereotype is, it makes the Anakin/Padme relationship pretty jarring.

I guess I didn't have an issue here because it's mythology and no myth is complete without a screwed up love story that births the epic heroes into being...I mean, birthing twins, being several years senior to a boy whom she teaches and is betrayed, and the boy self-fulfills his prophecy of the death of his lover.
So Apollo and Artemis, Sidhathra, and Oedipus rolled up into one, shaken up and poured out.

I think I read too many ancient stories for that to shock me.
I just wasn't sure which it was, so thanks for the clarity. :)

    Cheers,
    Jayson

While I can't fault the sentiment of the original post, the Chantrell art is my personal favourite too, especially as a homebrew DVD cover alongside these two particular TESB and ROTJ posters...
    ANH.png TESB.jpg ROTJ.jpg
I think I favour these images because I owned the UK VHS Widescreen releases from 1994 (the Kazuhiko Sano Jedi artwork edges out the Struzan "Revenge" poster for me though, just because it sits better alongside the others, IMHO).

FWIW, I don't know why, but I've always imagined these three would be my choices if I had to do covers for a set of bonus discs or special editions or something:

Are you sure - I could have swore I saw someone post the cover (same C-3PO image as the UK one) with Spanish text somewhere online recently?

That second one looks like a scene from Cronenburg's Scanners series instead of Star Wars.

Lots of cool posters here to enjoy. While not Star Wars, this one is high of my list of favorites.

    I love this poster!

I love the mid 70's to early 80's science fiction fantasy art, and all of my favorite Star Wars art is from this same time period.
It's not a talked about period and genre of art all that much, but it's such a unique and interesting moment in art history and it's packed with such flavor, style, and imagination.

    Such great work!
Movie poster art is a lost art. Posters now are just ... meh. No one wants to spend the money, or time waiting, on such posters anymore.
It's seen in the business as inferior now that computers exist, but what's overlooked is that painting is an art - not a means to an end.
I'd love for it to make a revival. There are incredible painters out there who could be doing amazing poster work far more than we're getting.

    Oh well.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Now that the Skywalker saga is over (at least for now) these are my two favorite posters of the SW saga:
